CHARACTERISTICS:

Geography, cytology: Sub-tropical to tropical (mainly). Widespread in the tropics, also
Mediterranean, E. Asia and America.
Habit and leaf form: Trees, or shrubs; laticiferous (e.g. in Anacardium), or non-laticiferous
and without colored juice; resinous. The plants are non-succulent, self-supporting or climbing.
Leaves are evergreen or deciduous; nearly always alternate); when alternate, spiral;
herbaceous; aromatic (resinous), or without marked odour; simple, or compound. Lamina
pinnately veined. Leaves exstipulate. Lamina with secretory cavities (but not noticeably gland-
dotted). Secretory cavities containing resin, or containing latex. Main veins embedded.

Inflorescence: Floral, fruit and seed morphology. Flowers aggregated in inflorescences; in
panicles. The terminal inflorescence unit racemose. Flowers regular; typically 5 merous; cyclic;
tetracyclic, or pentacyclic.
Fruit: Fleshy (usually), or non-fleshy (occasionally); when dry indehiscent; a drupe. The
drupes with one stone. Seeds non-endospermic.

The name Anacardium is derived from two Greek words, ana without, and
cardium a heart, because the pulp of the fruit, instead of having the seed enclosed,
has the nut growing out at the end of it. (UNFEELING/ HARD HEARTED). The juice in
the nut is of such ACRIDITY, that it is used by the natives to burn off warts and
other excrescences; they used it also mixed with chalk for marking their linen.

PATHOGENESIS:

Farrington all the plants of this order are poisonous, they develop an eruption on the skin,
which is at first vesicular, and finally pustular and eczematous. They may also produce an
erythema ending in erysipelas. Despite the similarities there are great differences in their
physiological action, example Anacardium exerts a depressing influence on the system, not only
as to the mind, but as to the body as well. Special senses get blunted and the person becomes
very dull.

Millspaugh summarizes the effects of rhus (the majority of poisonings caused by rhus radicans)
as follows: first redness and swelling of the affected part, with intolerable itching and burning,
followed by vertigo, weariness, and a sort of intoxication. Infiltration of face and eyes, and
agglutination of the lids after sleep; great restlessness, pain, thirst and fever. The surface of the
skin becomes after a time studded with confluent bullae where the cellular tissue is loose, then
a dermatitis follows resembling erysipelas; this may spread rapidly and finally be communicated
to the mucus membranes. This is followed by swelling of the mouth and throat, cough, nausea
and vomiting. Rheumatoid pains develop about the joints, and a painful stiffness asserts itself in
the lumbar region, while the legs and arms become numb. Confusion of mind and delirium may
then set in during which the patient becomes so ill humored, restless, and anxious that he will
jump out of bed.

Usually the story of anacardiaceae develops after a lot of physical abuse and violent treatment

everybody and not able to express ones anger. The wife of a selfish tyrant or a dominating
husband who does not allow her to make any decisions and constantly criticizes can develop an
inferiority complex. The frustration is channelized in the form of mischievous and cruel
behavior.
