Mission Statement:

Dance is an art form that celebrates human life. Through movement, critical
thinking, and refective experiences students will gain appreciation and
understanding of the human body, gain physical skills and techniques, be
challenged through the creative process, and be able to analyze dance as an art
form.
Course Objectives:
y the end of each lesson students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of
the core dance curriculum !ody, "nergy, #pace, and Time$ and its importance in
dance. They will be able to interact with peers as well as the teacher in learning,
creating, teaching, and performing movement.
Required Course Materials:
Dance Journal & Pen/pencil% #tudents will keep a daily dance &ournal based on
the daily prompts given. 'ournals will be gathered periodically and scored
based on participation and ful(llment of the assignment. #tudents should
store this &ournal in their dance locker with their dance clothing.
Lock for Dance locker: ) small locker is provided in the dance changing room
for dance clothing to be stored. The student is responsible for items stored
therein. #tudents must bring a lock to keep their personal items secure.
Dance clothing% *The better we look, the better we feel, the better we
dance.+
o lack green or white T,shirt, -+strap tank top or leotard. )bsolutely no
stomachs, chests or backs showing. .o spaghetti strap shirts/
o lack or 0reen 1ants you can move in !2ong, 3apri, or standard length
shorts$. 4ou may wear short shorts over dance pants. 1ants should not
extend past the ankle.

socks, tennis shoes, etc.$
o #chool wide Dress and 0rooming standard will be enforced
Procedures:
#tudents will have 6 minutes after the bell to dress into dance clothes before the
7nstructor takes roll. #tudents will be writing answer to a daily question in their
&ournal during this time. 3lass will then begin with a warm,up and experience
movement sequences. 7mprovisational and compositional activities will be
experienced in class as well. #tudents will be given 6 minutes at the end of class to
dress into school clothing before the bell.
Rules:
These rules will help you to be safe as well as respecting the classroom, yourself,
and others
1roper dance attire is required for dance. This allows for optimal range of
motion, analysis of alignment, and clarity in movement. 1roper clothing
includes form (tting dance clothes !4oga clothes are good as well$ that allows
the instructor to see alignment for technique and safety.
8air must be o9 the face and no large &ewelry.
.o 0um, 5ood, or Drink in class. ) water bottle is highly encouraged.
Do not touch mirrors, sound system or things in :rs. Tarabilda;s o<ce.
Do not bring cell,phones, ipods, or other electronic devices to class. They will
be con(scated.

Grading:
1articipation 55% % 1articipation is key to success in a dance class,,your body
is the textbook/ #tudents will receive 20 points for full participation a day.

dressing, bad attitude, tardies, not following rules, etc. 8ere is the break

o %20 points% )bsence, refusal to participate
@points lost from absence can be regained within one week of absence
through turning in a one page dance report.
o %&0 points% Tardies, not dressing, leaving early, disrespect, disruptive
behavior
o %5 points% 7mproper hair or &ewelry, gum, socks, or food in class %5
points per violation
:ovement '0% % Daily movement exercises, and movement exams will be a
ma&or portion of class, which will test technique, improvisation skills, and
composition based on the unit studied.
Aritten )ssignments &5% % Aritten assignments such as &ournals, concert
critiques, and other dance reportsBrefections will make up -6> of your grade.
7n these assignments 7 expect clear well thought out work with complete
sentences that ful(ll the assignment.

Ma(e u) *or(:
)n excused absence may be made up within one week of the absence
through a make up dance report. This dance report is a - page typed
summary of a Dance 8istory, .ewspaper, or magazine article.
) student may be excused from participating because of illness or in&ury if a
note is provided from a parent, doctor, or school nurse. ) note,taking sheet
must be completely (lled out and shown to the teacher before leaving class.
7f a student cannot participate for longer than C days, a note from a doctor is
required.
1erformance experience is di<cult to make up. 7f a performance is missed a
-= hour dance pro&ect will be required.
