1. Potter, D. A. Acting Up and Acting Out: Conduct Disorder and Competing Media
Frames. Taylor & Francis Online, 35, 152-172. Retrieved June 7, 2014
2. Potter attempts to look at the many measures used to diagnose CD and determines that
neither the public nor the medical health professionals know enough about the causes of
this disorder to know who to hold responsible. The public sees the child as acting up and
either blames the parents or the child him/herself, but the medical health professionals are
unable to pinpoint the biological or neurological cause of the disorder, but they
acknowledge that one other than behavioral must exist.
3. I work at the Child Study Center at Virginia Tech and my reason for this was because I
was mainly interested in troubled children suffering from ODD and CD (the reason I
chose this article over others- I find it interesting). I did not know that there were no
physiological or neurological biomarkers for the diagnosis of Conduct Disorder. I knew
that there were many behavioral indicators but I did not know diagnoses were strictly
dependent on this.

1. Esselmont, C. Carrying a Weapon to School: The Roles of Bullying Victimization and
Perceived Safety. Taylor & Francis Online, 35, 215-232. Retrieved June 6, 2014
2. Researchers found that preventing school-related violence could be as easy as fostering a
school environment where bullying was kept at bay and students felt safe.
3. I think that this information is interesting but that standing alone, this does not contribute
much to helping a schools safety. I think that more research using this information could
lead to a useful program that school administrations can apply to the environment, but as
it stands now it sort of goes without saying that fostering a safe environment will prevent
school violence.

1. Hawdon, J. E. Cycles of deviance: Structural change, moral boundaries, and drug use,
18801990. Sociological Spectrum, 183-207.
2. The article explores the correlation between the two major waves of drug use in the
United States and the dramatic social change that occurred during these periods.
Evidence found supports the explanation that increasing rates of immigration and
urbanization led to an increase in drug use.
3. I thought that this article was really insightful because instead of seeing drug use as a
cause for social change, as many people view it, the article saw drug use as a result of
changing society. I thought that it was a unique perspective.

1. Hawdon, J. E. the role of presidential rhetoric in the creation of a moral panic: reagan,
bush, and the war on drugs. Deviant Behavior, 22, 419-445.
2. The authors of the study looked at the political rhetorics affect on the creation of a
moral panic, and found a correlation between the political addresses and the language
used, and the backlash it created in the form of a moral panic.

3. I found this article extremely hard to follow. I couldnt understand much of the topic
addressed, and this could be because I am unfamiliar with the political policy that was
discussed in much of the article.

1. Bernburg, J. G., Krohn, M., & Rivera, C. Official Labeling, Criminal Embeddedness,
And Subsequent Delinquency: A Longitudinal Test Of Labeling Theory. Journal of
Research in Crime and Delinquency, 43, 67-88.
2. The goal of the article was to examine the ties between deviant labeling and the actual act
of committing deviant behavior. The theory suggests that the labeling of someone
confines them to that role, and the further deviance is a result of not being able to break
the ties that are associated with the label. The study found that deviant groups such as
gangs often group together because there is an acceptance of the deviant label.
3. This article was interesting because it elaborated on a previous theory and found more
information and I enjoyed reading the continued findings.

1. Chambliss, W. J. The Saints and the Roughnecks. Society, 24-31.
2. This article looked at two school gangs, the Saints and the Roughnecks, and examined
how each were viewed in the community while committing roughly equal acts of deviant
behavior. The Saints were upper class and the Roughnecks were lower class, and the
Roughnecks viewed more deviant than the Saints whose behavior was deemed sewing
wild oats because of the perceptions of their families, their extra-curricular activities and
school involvement, and their potential futures in college. The Roughnecks reinforced
their behavior reflected on them from their label and continued the deviant behavior
because their communitys perception of them was not as positive.
3. I found this article extremely interesting because it took into account class with the
labeling of the gangs. I found the theory of the reinforcement sad because the boys
thought the same of themselves as how the community labeled them. I thought this was
so interesting and I really enjoyed reading it!

1. Trammel, R., Raby, J., Anderson, A., Hampton, S., & Stickney, T. Maintaining Order
and Following the Rules: Gender Differences in Punishing Inmate Misconduct. Deviant
Behavior, 35, 804-821. Retrieved June 29, 2014
2. This study focuses on the interpersonal relationships between prison employees and their
methods of punishing inmate misconduct. The study found that sexual misconduct was
an issue between several female employees and the inmates, and there were fewer issues
with men and lesbian employees.
3. The fact that there were no respondents from the womens prison was interesting to me
because I feel that the validity of this study would have been more serious had they had
those respondents.

1. Langton, L., Piquero, N. L., & Schoepfer, A. Low Self-Control Versus the Desire-For-
Control: An Empirical Test of White-Collar Crime and Conventional Crime. Deviant
Behavior, 35, 197-214. Retrieved June 30, 2014
2. This study develops from existing research by examining the relationship between low
self-control and the desire for control in predicting conventional, occupational, and
corporate crimes. For these types of crimes, the study suggests that either low self

control or the desire for control is present for the crime to take place, and that, depending
on the crime, one is more prevalent over the other.
3. I think this was extremely interesting as it suggests causes for crime taking place. I
enjoyed reading this article.
