Title: Tabata; Blast Fat in 4 Minutes
Here in UTP, most of the students don't get enough exercise. The problem is
even worse for girls, who are less active than boys and this is all because of the
packed schedule. Lack of exercise is tied to worldwide killers such as heart
disease, diabetes and breast and colon cancer. Four minutes workouts would do
the trick.
Audience
1. My audience are university students which are my classmates and my lecturer. My
audience may be familiar with the topic and will understand and appreciate it. But
there is also probability that my audience know nothing about the topic and need
some time fully understand the importance of my topic.
2. This information will help me to know my audience attitudes; how they feel about the
topic and how they feel about me. With this I can easily handle my crowd and I can
limit my presentation to their needs and design the presentation specifically for them.
3. I will try to gain their attention by firstly, cater to their interests. Secondly, mention
their beliefs and thirdly, I will tell how my presentation can enhance their knowledge.
4. Some ethical issues that I take into consideration:
My audience reasonably aware that I am persuading him/her.
My persuasion methods are non-coercive. My audience is free to accept or reject
my presentation.
I am trying to persuade my audience to do something that I honestly believe is in
his/her best interest and I would be comfortable as a recipient myself, not just a
sender.
Presentation
1. Introduction
The purpose of choosing this topic is to persuade student to lead a healthy
life.
The topic is relevant to audience because Tabata training is short on time and
tough on fat so students got no reason to skip workouts.
Thesis statement:
People across the world are falling so far short on exercise that the problem
has become a global pandemic, causing nearly a tenth of deaths worldwide
and killing roughly as many people as smoking. Lack of exercise is tied to
worldwide killers such as heart disease, diabetes and breast and colon
cancer. Tabata workouts four times a week would do the trick. So what
makes Tabata workouts differ from other workout?
Main points that will support my thesis statement: problem, history, what is
Tabata, benefits of Tabata.
My audience needs to feel that I am truthful, reliable and extensively
knowledgeable. So, to establish my credibility I will start by stating source of
my knowledge: my experience and research.
2. Body
[PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS: PERSUASIVE] January 1, 2014

I organised my presentation in a problem-solution pattern, the main points are
arranged to show the nature and significance of a problem, followed by an
explanation of a proposed solution to the problem.
Supporting ideas:
1. Problem: time restraint - packed schedule - lazy to exercise
2. History: discovered by Japanese scientist Dr. Izumi Tabata and a
team of researchers from the National Institute of Fitness and Sports
in Tokyo.
3. What is Tabata?: workout hard for 20 second - rest for 10 seconds -
complete eight rounds.
4. Benefits: improved participants insulin sensitivity reduces risk of
diabetes help to get fit in a short time burns fat
To ensure that there is a coherent transition from one point to the next main
point, I use transitional phrases in my presentation. I use sequence e.g. at
first, later on, next, and afterwards. Not only that, I use restatement e.g. in
other words, to put it differently and in short. I also use to sum up, by and
large and on the whole when summarising.
In summarising each main point, I review briefly my main point so that
audience remember it throughout the presentation.
3. Conclusion
To summarise the entire presentation, firstly, I restate the purpose and
importance of Tabata workouts. Then, I recap the main points of the topic and
conclude the entire presentation. I also provide a video. This will help to
imprint my presentation in my audiences mind.
I repeat the purpose of my presentation which was to persuade students to
lead a healthy life and the importance which was to make students healthier
and fitter by only using four minutes for four times a week. This will leave my
audience reflecting on how beneficial the topic was to them.
Question and Answer (Q&A) Session
Questions that I anticipate from the audience:
1. Do I need a coach?
2. What is the right time to do the workout?
3. Will there be any side effect after doing the workout?
Practice session
1. I did my practice session in front of the mirror so that I will be able to speak fluently
and I also practised my presentation in front my friends to gain confidence. I practised
for like three to four times before the real presentation.
2. The area of my presentation that needed improvement is delivery. I feel like I am
lacking of confidence. Besides, I tend to speak very fast when I am nervous.
Did I stay within the time limit?
Yes.
