4e Psyco1ogy Undergraduate Computer Laboratory was designed and constructed as an
instructiona1 resource *or te entire psyco1ogy department. 4raditiona11y te department5s /esearc
Design in Psyco1ogy (P67C8%!&) and /esearc Ana1ysis in Psyco1ogy (P67C8%%&) courses
a9e been assigned to tis room because o* te computer based statistica1 pac:ages o*ten used by
tese courses. 0owe9er( instructors( ;4As( and 4As sou1d 9iew te assignment o* teir courses to
tis room as a pri9i1ege. <ai1ure to *o11ow and en*orce te po1icies and procedures o* te 1ab wi11
1ead to a 1oss o* tis pri9i1ege and reassignment to anoter room.
4e *o11owing po1icies and procedures are intended to e1p in te operation( scedu1ing(
maintenance( and security o* our 1aboratory. P1ease read eac o* te *o11owing sections care*u11y
so you wi11 *u11y understand your responsibi1ities wi1e using te 1aboratory.
=t is important *or e9eryone to rea1i>e tey are responsib1e *or wat appens in room
3&, during teir assigned time. 7ou are responsib1e *or super9ising your students
during te entire c1ass or 1ab period. Anyone *ound 1ea9ing teir students
unsuper9ised *or teir c1ass period wi11 ris: 1osing 1ab pri9i1eges. During your
assigned time( nobody e1se sou1d be in te room. Un1ess someone as recei9ed prior
appro9a1 and we a9e in*ormed you o* tat appro9a1( you a9e te responsibi1ity and
autority to re?uest anyone wo is not in your c1ass to 1ea9e room 3&,. =* you a9e
any prob1ems wit anyone not eeding tis re?uest( as: *or teir name and socia1
security number. =* tey re*use to meet tis re?uest and remain in te room( as: Pat

Mandatory &rientation Meetings

1aboratory po1icies and procedures. =* you cannot attend( you wi11 be gi9en a grace period o* one

wi11 a1so be re?uired to sign a *orm (see page % o* tis manua1) concerning te materia1 co9ered
in tis manua1. =* you do not contact tem by te end o* te *irst wee:( you wi11 be 1oc:ed out o*

0cheduling Policies and Procedures
Assigning courses to room 102:
At te beginning o* eac semester( te *u11$time UCLA is gi9en a 1ist o* c1ass periods and
days *acu1ty and graduate students need te 1ab eac wee: based on assignments by te associate
ead *or P67C8%!& I P67C8%%&. =nstructors24As *or oter courses re?uiring use o* te 1ab
sou1d respond to te UCLA re?uest *or oters wo want to scedu1e teir course or speci*ic
c1ass periods in 3&,. 4e *u11$time UCLA wi11 try to meet a11 re?uests in addition to P67C8%!&
I P67C8%%&( but may be unab1e to accommodate e9eryone due to con*1icts.
Open lab hours scheduling:
Based on te 1ist o* c1ass periods and days *acu1ty and graduate students need te 1ab eac
wee:( te *u11$time UCLA creates a scedu1e to determine wen te 1ab wi11 be a9ai1ab1e *or
open 1ab ours. )pen 1ab ours wi11 be posted on te door and on te computer 1ab website
(ttp:22psyco1ogy.uga.edu2computer1ab2computer1ab.tm1). A UCLA wi11 be on duty in te 1ab during te
posted open 1ab times. During open 1ab ours undergraduate students can drop in and use te 1ab
*or assignments re1ated to teir psyco1ogy c1asses.
UCLA responsibilities during open lab hours:
During open ours te UCLAs are responsib1e *or o9ersigt o* te 1ab and e1ping i*
tere are any ardware or so*tware prob1ems. =nstructors sou1d be aware( and ma:e sure teir
students are aware( tat te UCLAs are not responsib1e *or e1ping students wit speci*ic
assignments (e.g.( eCp1aining ow to create a speci*ic 6P66 ana1ysis based on a c1ass proDect te
student as brougt in *or ana1ysis). 4e UCLAs may assist in suc instances i* tey coose to(
but tey are not re?uired to( and sou1d not be eCpected to do so.
Changes in room 102 scheduling:
7ou may not arbitrari1y switc your time in room 3&, or scedu1e additiona1 time in room
3&,. 7ou must contact a UCLA to switc your time s1ot and2or to scedu1e additiona1 time.
Requesting time in room 102 or running sub!ects:
4ere is a pre$appro9a1 po1icy *or obtaining te use o* room 3&, *or researc (e.g.( /P
subDects). 4e *u11$time undergrad 1ab 4A is in carge o* imp1ementing te po1icy( wic went

"nstructor Computer# $ro!ector# % Cabinet
A cei1ing proDector is connected to te instructor computer. 4is proDector can be used to
sow eiter DGDs( GC/ tapes or te instructor computer. 4e bu1b in tis proDector is eCpensi9e
and as a 1imited number o* operating ours. Please turn o"" the pro:ector immediately a"ter
you ha;e "inished using it.
=* te proDector is on wen you entered te room( p1ease note it in te 1og boo: and send
an emai1 message immediate1y to te UCLA(s) te11ing tem te day and time it was *ound 1e*t
on. 4is way we can attempt to ascertain wo was in te room and was responsib1e *or 1ea9ing it
on.
Turning the computers on
4e computers sou1d be on wen you enter te room. =* te green 1igt on te monitor is
on but te screen is b1ac:( te computer is in Js1eepJ mode. Just it a :ey on te :eyboard or
mo9e te mouse and te screen sou1d come on. =* te screen is b1ac: and tere is no green 1igt
on te monitor( ten te computer is tru1y o**. Just it te JpowerJ :ey in te upper rigt$and
corner o* te :eyboard. 4e power :ey 1oo:s 1i:e an arrow ead pointing 1e*t. =* tis does not
turn te power on( 1oo: on te bac: o* te computer itse1*. )n te bac: o* te monitor is a rater

$rinter issues:
Printing can be somewat tric:y. <or some reason( te D)6 dri9er and tis printer do not
get a1ong too we11. <or eCamp1e( te cogniti9e psyco1ogy 1ab program as consistent1y ad
printing prob1ems. Most instructors wo use tis so*tware Dust te11 teir students to write down
te data *rom te screen. =* students attempt to print teir data unsuccess*u11y( be aware tat it
can be printed 1ater by eiter using Aotepad or retrie9ing it out o* te spoo1er print reDect *o1der.
As: a UCLA i* you wou1d 1i:e *urter instructions. =* te student is in te 1ab during open 1ab
ours( we can usua11y reso19e te prob1em.
=* your print command was not carried out( cec: te *o11owing tings:

,.) 4e most common cause *or printer prob1ems is rater simp1e( and o*ten o9er1oo:ed. A11 o*

Fen te printer cartridge runs out o* in: p1ease ac?uire a new one in te main o**ice
(room ,,!) *or a rep1acement. Because te printer cartridges are eCpensi9e( p1ease :eep
undergraduate printing to a minimum.

-9eryone using te computers in te 3&, sou1d operate under te po1icy tat anyting o*
9a1ue sou1d be bac:ed up. Do not 1ea9e *i1es beind on any o* te computers in te 1ab. UCLAs
do periodic ard$dri9e maintenance( inc1uding purging any *i1es not essentia1 *or operation.
Be sure your students understand tey sou1d ALFA76 sa9e teir data at e9ery possib1e
opportunity( and :eep bac:up copies. 6P66 on tese macines as been :nown to *ree>e up. =t is
strong1y suggested wor: be sa9ed periodica11y (e.g. e9ery so many entries).

door combination may be unnecessary. 0owe9er( in te e9ent it is needed(
