The following pages offer a vast amount of information on the design and construction of
strainers. Please feel free to contact our staff at your convenience for personal assistance.
A. Strainer Definition and Purpose
Strainers are used normally for the protection of pipeline and petroleum process equipment installed
downstream of the strainer. The equipment protected by our strainers is generally more expensive than
the total installation cost of a strainer. Also this equipment is critical to the pipeline or process operation.
Strainers use perforated and/or wire mesh media for straining purposes. These materials are two
dimensional, meaning they do not have a Depth or Dirt Holding capacity. This means that when
a debris particle is caught in the straining media the opening is blocked or plugged. This results in
reduced available opening for flow. Strainer sizing and selection are critical to insure your cleaning
cycle time, particle size retention and pressure drop requirements are achieved.
B. Straining Media Selection for Basket
The following is a general guideline of media we have typically seen used in the various applications
shown, but is in no way intended to supercede your specific requirements. This information is strictly
based on observations made from our many years of experience and WeamcoMetric makes no
guarantees that it is correct and/or applicable for your specific application.

WeamcoMetric Provers
In most cases, accurate measurement of your valuable liquids is a vital process of your every-
day business. WeamcoMetric has been helping companies successfully accomplish this for
many years. With innovative designs, detailed engineering, high quality manufacturing and on
time deliveries, WeamcoMetric has stayed at the forefront of a demanding industry. With an
excellent knowledge of the latest technology, coupled with a vast amount of experience, you
can rest assured you came to the right place for your measurement needs.
WeamcoMetric manufactures several types and configurations of Conventional Meter Provers.
The Positive Displacement Pipe Meter Prover is by far the most widely used and most reliable
on the market today. The Pipe Provers have a Known Traceable Volume which is compared
to the actual meter output. These two figures are used to determine what is known as a meter
factor. By applying the meter factor to the meter output, you correct for the meters inaccuracy,
which results in a very precise measurement. This is a valuable resource in areas such as
custody transfer and fiscal measurement.
WeamcoMetric recommends highly to our customers that all Provers be manufactured with the

The following pages offer more specific information and photos of our design and
manufacturing capabilities. Please feel free to contact our staff at your convenience for
assistance in anyway with your measurement needs.
VII. Calibration
Prior to placing a prover into service, a Base Prover Volume must be determined.
This is done by a water-draw calibration as outlined in API Chapter 4, as previously
mentioned, and API Chapter 12, Section 2, Part 4. The calibration also verifies that all
components are sealing properly and are in working condition.
The calibration is completed using field measures, thermometers, and gauges that are
traceable to NIST, per API Chapter 4.7.
VIII. Summary
Conventional displacement type pipe provers are the most commonly used and
accepted method of meter proving. Care of details in design specifications,
construction, and calibration are essential to the proper functioning of a complete
measurement system.
IX. Please use our Prover Data Sheet for your Inquiry or Purchase Order. This will allow
us to propose a more detailed offering for your application.

Rev. 3/07
I. Meter Prover Definition
Liquid Flow Provers are defined as a Known Traceable Volume which is used
to verify and establish a meter factor during actual flowing and operating conditions.
(Traceable to NIST)
II. Types of Conventional Meter Provers
A) Bidirectional Prover (pipe prover): A positive displacement type prover with
flow and displacer traveling in both directions by means of a 4-way diverter valve.
B) Unidirectional Prover (pipe prover): A positive displacement type prover
with flow and displacer traveling always in one direction, by means of a transfer
chamber, or interchange.
C) Volumetric Tank Prover: As the name implies, this prover is a calibrated tank
or vessel with a sight gauge and scale to read a metered volume.
The flow must be stopped to determine the volume.
III. Principle of Operation of a Positive Displacement Meter Prover
We will use bidirectional provers as the example for most items.
(Please see the drawing attached)
A) To prove a meter, flow is established though the meter then to the prover via
the prover manifold valves.
B) Flow goes into the 4-way diverter valve and forces a sphere displacer into the
pipe section, which seals against the pipe walls.
C) The displacer passes between two detector switches. The volume between
switches is known as the calibrated volume. This volume is compared to
the volume indicated by the meter, to determine a meter factor.
Meter Factor =Actual Volume (Prover)
Metered Volume (Meter)

2) Meter(s) to be proved
a) Minimum pulses per unit volume, or K factor
(e.g., 1000 pulses per BBL).
3) Design Specifications and Codes
a) ASME/ANSI B31.4 Pipeline (mechanical design)
b) ASME/ANSI B31.3 Refinery (mechanical design)
c) Material Specifications
d) Electrical Classification
e) ANSI Pressure Rating
f) Space Limitations
g) Automation
h) Prover configuration, (e.g., aboveground, portable, etc.)
API Chapter 4 Proving Systems, Section 2 Conventional Displacement Type Pipe
Provers, is the industry standard for prover design, calibration, and recommended
practices.
B) Sizing and Volume Requirements
1) Prover sizing is determined by Maximum and Minimum Sphere Velocities
Maximum: Unidirectional - 10 ft/sec.
Bidirectional - 5 ft/sec. or higher. (see API 4.2)
Minimum: depends on lubricating properties of the product
--low velocities may cause sphere to jerk or surge
Recommend 1.0 ft/sec. min.
See API Chapter 4, Paragraph 4.3.4
2) Prover volume is determined by:
a) API specifies the accumulation of 10,000 unaltered meter pulses
between detector switches. (see e. below)
b) Meter K Factor (or pulses per unit volume).
c) Repeatability of the detector switches and system.
d) Prover counter resolution
e) Use of Double Chromometry to allow use of Reduced Volume Provers
A prover must be capable of repeating the volume between detector switches by
0.02 percent. (By Water-Draw Calibration)
Prover sizing and Volume must be considered with other factors to have a
Realistic Prover Design, e.g.:
Space Available
Costs
Meter Selection and Pulses Transmitted
Product service
Etc.

C) Pre-Run Length
A prover must have a sufficient pre-run length from the launch chamber to the first
detector switch to allow the 4-way diverter valve to cycle completely and seal
properly before the displacer triggers the first detector switch. Also allowing the
displacer to reach uniform velocity.
V. Prover Construction and Components
A) Pipe: Pipe should be free of defects, dents, scratches or rust pits. Pipe
should be hand-picked for uniformity and roundness.
B) Flange Seats: Flanges in the calibrated section are match-bored, machined
with O-Ring grooves for sealing, and dowel-pinned.
C) Launch Chambers: The pipe section prior to the pre-run and calibrated
section is used to launch and receive the sphere. Launch chambers should be
two pipe sizes larger to allow flow by-pass around the sphere and allow the
sphere to decelerate. Also allowing easy sphere removal with the use of quick
opening closures. Launch chambers can be horizontal, vertical, or inclined.
D) Sphere and Accessories: Inflatable sphere displacers are the most common
used. The sphere is normally inflated from 2% to 4% larger than the prover pipe
inside diameter. The sphere is filled with 50/50 mix of glycol and water. Proper
inflation and roundness are vital for sealing and repeatability.
Sphere Materials Available:
1) Neoprene
2) Nitile
3) Urethane (most commonly used and can be purchased in
various durometers)
Sphere Removal Tools
Pumps & Inflating Kits
Sizing Rings
E) Detector Switches: Detector Switches are used to gate the pulse counter.
Detector switch repeatability is crucial in determining the prover volume
and in turn proving a meter.
The most common switch is a Mechanical Actuated Electrical type, such as
our Mag-Tek M-6, which has a plunger inserted into the pipe. The sphere passes
under the plunger to raise and make the switch or contact. These switches are
all pressure balanced so pressure forces are not a factor.
Rev. 3/07
F) Diverter Valve: Bidirectional provers utilize a 4-way diverter valve. This
valve is ported to allow flow to enter one launch chamber and exit the
opposite, and by cycling the valve the flow direction is reversed.
All 4-way valves are designed for speed and seat seal integrity.
Valves should be equipped with a means of checking the seal for leakage
(e.g., Block and Bleed Port, DP Gauge or Switch).
G) Diverter Valve Operator: Most diverter valves are equipped with actuators
to automate the prover operation. These can be electrical, hydraulic, or
pneumatic. Electric operators are the most commonly used. Manual
handwheels, with latching mechanisms, are used on smaller systems.
H) Internal Coatings: Internal coatings are applied to the prover for two
main purposes:
1) Protect the pipe from corrosion and pitting which can cause
repeatability problems.
2) Provide a smooth uniform surface for the sphere to travel in,
and ensure a good seal with stable movement without surges or jerks.
Common Types of Coating:
1) Air-Dried Epoxy
2) Baked-On Phenolic
3) None Bare (crude service)
VI. Prover Accessories and Trim:
1) External Paint and Insulation
2) Drain Valves, Block & Bleed Type or Arrangement
3) Pressure Gauges
4) Thermometers
5) Pressure Relief Valve
6) Pressure and Temperature Transmitters
7) Field Calibration Connections
8) Sphere by-pass for Vertical Launch Chambers
9) Skid Mounted
10) Vent Valves

Bi-Directional Provers
By far the most commonly used Prover in the industry for many years. The Bi-Directional
Displacement Type Pipe Prover has proven itself over and over again as one of the most reliable
means available to verify meter readings and establish meter factors. It is still the most recom-
mended and used Prover design in the world today.
By definition the Bi-Directional Pipe Prover is a positive displacement type prover with flow and
displacer traveling in both directions by means of a 4-way diverter valve. The Bi-Directional Prover
is constructed of pipe, which can be configured in many ways. Probably the most influential
advantage of the Pipe Prover is its ability to allow the full flow of the stream through the meter
being proved to pass through the prover. In this regard the Bi-Directional Pipe Prover offers a
history of long-term reliability with minimum maintenance.
WeamcoMetric established itself many years ago as one of the leaders in Bi-Directional Pipe
Prover design, engineering and manufacturing. With WeamcoMetric you will be working with one
of the most professional staffs and highly skilled manufacturing forces in the business. This
assures that your projects will run smoothly and on schedule. Our people will do everything
within their power to accommodate the needs and desires of our customers.

General Information
Mag-Tek features a pressure balanced, piston actuated, proximity
switch with no dynamic seals. The switch is factory sealed, with
no field adjustment, eliminating the chance of slipping from the
original setting. The hemispherical shape of the piston allows
either uni-directional or bi-directional operation. The detector
switch is manufactured from stainless steel and designed for
either above ground or below ground applications. Once
installed the Mag-Tek has only one moving part, the pressure-
balanced piston, thus allowing continuous, maintenance free,
and accurate operation. Mag-Tek switches are also interchange-
able with most other brands of switch mountings.
Installation Instructions
The standard Mag-Tek detector switch is designed for installation
on pipe having a nominal wall thickness of 0.375 inches or less.
If the Mag-Tek is to be used on pipe having a wall thickness
greater than 0.375 inches, be sure to specify when ordering.
1. Select the desired location on the pipe for the Mag-Tek
detector switches. These points are usually, but not
necessarily, on top of the pipe.
2. Drill a 7/8 diameter hole at each point. Care should be
taken to keep the drill bit centered and perpendicular to
the pipe.
3. All drill cuttings should be removed from inside the pipe.
If, due to design, this cannot readily be done with a cloth
or a stream of air, it can usually be done with a small
mechanics extension type, hand-held magnet inserted
through the 7/8 drilled hole.
4. The inside of the drilled hole should be rounded or
chamfered with a file or stone to remove sharp edges.
5. Center the base plate guide-lip in the 7/8 diameter hole
in the pipe, taking care to orient the base plate properly so
that it is level and square with the pipe.
6. With the base plate level and square, lightly tack weld
onto the pipe. Check to be sure the base plate guide lip is
still seated. If so, complete the seal welding with the
required passes. Do not allow weld splatter or arc on the
switch mounting face of the base plate. If Mag-Tek
detector switches are to be installed on a prover after it
has been internally coated, care should be taken to
minimize the weld heat. It is suggested the weld be
cooled from time to time with wet rags or other means.
Filling the prover barrel with water, if practical, prior to
welding, will further minimize damage to the internal coating.
7. Check mounting face to make sure it is free from burrs and
weld splatter. DO NOT PAINT the face of the mounting plate.
8. Mount switch on base with (4) 3/8 cap screws.
Recommended torque 240 inch pounds. Maximum torque
300 inch pounds.
Operation
Once installed the hemispherical portion of the probe extends
into the I.D. of the pipe approximately 3/8. When the sphere
passes the switch, it forces the probe upward. This upward
movement causes the ferrous body of the piston to enter the
magnetic field of the proximity switch sensor. The result of the
attracting forces causes the magnet in the sealed switch to
move toward the ferrous piston causing the normally open
contacts to close and complete the electrical circuit.

Trouble Shooting
Due to the limited number of moving parts, problems with the
Mag-Tek detector switch are few. The most common problems
can be attributed to one of the following:
1. Switch damage - the switch may have been damaged by
excessive electrical currents, or by dropping the switch. To
check, remove the switch from the base, connect it to a
volt/ohm meter and slide the piston into the lower portion
of the switch. The switch should close and open as the
piston is moved into and out of the switch. If it does not
function properly, a replacement element is required.
2. No indication - The sphere is not contacting the piston
properly. Measure the O.D. of the scraper cup or sphere to
be certain they are the proper diameter.
3. No indication - Foreign material has accumulated above
the piston in the sensing chamber preventing the piston
from traveling upward. Remove the switch and clean the
base of the switch and the spring. Check the bleed
grooves in the piston to be sure they are clear.
4. Switch is clean and checks out OK, the switch is sized
properly, but the switch is intermittent or still does not
function properly - misalignment of the base and hole causing
the piston to bind or preventing it from extending into the pipe
ID Recheck the base fit and probe insertion depth.
Recommended Spare Parts
Due to the simplicity of the switch, once it is installed the
detector can operate indefinitely without the need for spare parts.

5. Carefully center the base plate over the 7/8 diameter hole
in the pipe, taking care to orient the base plate properly so
that it is level with the pipe. Dimension from face of base
plate to outside of pipe must be 2 3/8. This will leave a
gap of approximately 1/8 for welding. Caution: The
orientation of base plate to pipe is critical for proper
switch operation and any misalignment may cause
switch to malfunction. We stongly recommend the use
of an alignment tool available from the factory.
6. With the base plate positioned as described in paragraph 5
above, lightly tack weld base plate to the pipe. Do the
following checks before proceeding.
A. Base plate is still centered over hole, and level with the pipe.
B. The dimension from face of base plate to pipe still measures
2 3/8
Once all above is confirmed, complete the seal welding with
required passes. Do not allow weld splatter or arc on the
switch mounting face of the base plate. If Mag-Tek detector

To determine the exact time of interface in
pipeline operations.
A fluid sample from the pipeline flows continuously
through the sampler jars. The fluid enters the system
past a thermometer giving the operating temperature.
Fluid is then allowed to enter the hydrometer jars
through the individual inlet valves filling the jar to the
overflow level floating the hydrometer. The overflow
goes to drain. Each jar has a dump valve separate from
the overflow. By observing the specific gravity change
the exact time of product interface can be observed.

with NO SPECIAL TOOLS, to change a corrosion measurement
coupon in a pipeline while under continuous operating pressure.
The coupon holder accepts a 1/2 wide by 1/8 thick coupon,
and features a Teflon seat to eliminate eloctrolitic corrosion. The
gear rack with coupon is lowered into the line through use of a
pinion gear on a stainless steel shaft driven by an external hand-
wheel. The shaft is sealed against internal pressure by two Viton
O-rings. Thrust bearings are used on both ends of the pinion
shaft for ease of operation. The unit can be installed in either the
vertical or horizontal position. Standard design and construction
in accordance with ASME/ANSI B31.4. The unit can also be
manufactured in accordance with AMSE/ANSI B31.3 and
ASME/ANSI B31.8. Each unit is hydrostatically tested to 1 1/2
times design pressure. Sizes available to fit most pipe diameters.

I. INSTALLATION
The installation of either the CH-100 or CH-200 model
requires a 2 pipeline tap and 2 full opening (full port) ball
valve, screwed or flanged end, depending upon the model.
The coupon holder is mounted directly to the valve with the
handle arm parallel to the pipeline for the coupon to be
parallel with the flow.
II. OPERATION
A. Loading Holder
With ball valve in off position, remove the quick opening
closure cap, loosen handwheel lock, and turn handwheel
counter clockwise until gear rack becomes accessible from
the inner guide. Pull rack straight out of the top. The coupon
can then be installed on the teflon seat provided on the end
gear rack. See sketch. Note: The holder accepts a
1/2 wide x 1/8 thick coupon.
B. Locating Coupon Within Pipeline
Insert rack slowly into guide and slide it down until it
engages with the pinion and can be lowered into the body
by turning the handwheel clockwise. Replace closure and
secure. Open 2 valve and lower coupon into line by turning
handwheel clockwise until the coupon touches the far ID of
the pipe. Mark handwheel location with respect to the
handwheel lock. Each indentation on the OD of the hand
wheel represents 1/8 of rack (or coupon) travel. Turn
handwheel counter-clockwise to raise coupon to desired
position in the pipeline by noting the number of indentations
passed. Secure with locking screw.
C. Retrieving Coupon
Loosen locking screw and turn handwheel counter-clockwise
until it will go no further. Close 2 valve. Bleed internal
pressure from holder, then proceed to remove coupon.
III. MAINTENANCE
The only maintenance required is lubrication of the moving
parts. The rack and pinion assembly should be greased every
12 to 18 months, depending upon amount of usage and
service (lubricating or non-lubricating pipeline product).
The pinion assembly is removed by loosening set screw in
handwheel and removing. Next remove the blind flange,
which will pull the shaft and shaft support with seals. The
pinion shaft can then be pulled from the bearing housing. A
light film of commercially available lithumium-based grease
should be applied to pinion shaft, pinion gear and rack.
Pinion sealing O-Rings (P/N 100-18) can be replaced while
the pinion shaft is removed. Replace only if a leak has
occurred around the pinion shaft. When reinstalling pinion
shaft, take care not to damage or tear the O-Rings.
The quick opening closure should have the threads and
O-Ring cleaned with fresh grease applied after each removal.
IV. RECOMMENDED SPARE PARTS
(2) P/N 100-16 O-Rings for Quick Opening Closure, Buna-N
(4) P/N 100-18 Pinion Sealing O-Ring, Viton
(2) P/N 100-10 Teflon Insulator
