Often anxiety is rooted in exaggeration of ones worst fears and negative thoughts. If you are the kind of person who embraces worst-case scenarios regularly, you may need a cognitive tune-up. Strategies such as thought stopping might be helpful. Whenever a negative or anxiety-based thought occurs such as Im going to make a fool of myself or I dont measure up, tell yourself to STOP! Stopping these types of thoughts is essential to interrupting the cycle of anxiety.

Boils

Boils are localized tender, inflamed, pus-filled swellings in the skin surrounded by large red
areas. They are infections of the hair follicles of the skin. They are quite painful, particularly in
areas where the skin is closely attached to the underlying tissues, such as the nose, ears, or
fingers. They usually occur in teenagers and young adults. The common sites for boils are the
face, neck, and thighs.

Symptoms:

At first a painful red nodule appears on the skin. This grows bigger and then breaks down in the
middle where the pus collects .The painful experiences a great deal of irritation and itching.
There may be a single boil, or several boils in the same area or in different areas at the same
time. The swelling may not be limited to one hair follicle but extend to several follicles. When the
boils ripen, they give out a discharge. Fever may sometimes accompany the boils.

Root causes:

11 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
Boils may cause by staphylococcus germs, which enter the sweat glands or hair follicles. The
essential cause of this disorder is thus bacterial. However, several factors predispose the
growth of bacteria in hair follicles. Of these, the chief factor is a toxic condition in the blood
stream, which is due to a faulty diet and frenetic pace of living. Boils generally appear when a
person is in a run- down and devitalized condition.

Baldness refers to a loss of hair, usually on the head.

Symptoms:

Baldness may be due to certain serious diseases like acute fevers, myxodema (a syndrome
cause by hypothyroidism), syphilis, influenza, anaemia, and great anxiety or nervous shock. If
premature baldness is hereditary then not much can be done except delaying the falling of the
hair for some years through proper medication. Sometimes eczema, psoriasis of the scalp leads
to rapid baldness.

Root Causes

The administration of drugs indicated for premature graying of hair should help in the cases of
baldness also, but recourse to medication has to be taken in the earlier stage. If all the hair has

Bleeding Gum

Bleeding gums is among the common conditions affecting the oral cavity. The Chinese might
have noticed bleeding gums as early as 2500 BC. They termed the associated diseases as
"Ya-Kon" which means diseases of soft tissue surrounding the teeth. This problem still
continues to affect us even with so many modern facilities available in the field of oral care.
Gum disease begins with plaque, a sticky film of food particles, germs and saliva. If not
removed, plaque will settle at the gum line. The germs will produce toxins that makes the gums
red, tender and likely to bleed when brushing your teeth. There are chronic conditions and even
some medications that can cause plaque to accumulate more quickly. The purpose of daily
brushing rinsing and flossing is to clean away this plaque. When this plaque is not removed it
can harden into tartar which builds up along the gum line and traps germs below. The mildest
form of gum disease is called gingivitis and is the most common.

The primary cause of gingivitis is the bacteria that coat your teeth, and if oral hygiene is poor, it
forms a sticky white substance called plaque. The bacteria here proliferates faster and produces
toxins that irritates your gums, keeping them swollen and red. When they are left untreated,
they will destroy the tissues connecting the gums to the tooth, and eventually the tooth to the
bones, causing a deep pocket and eventually attacks the bony structure. It has now progressed
into what we call periodontitis, which is an irreversible form of gum disease.

Root Causes:

14 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
The following medical conditions are some of the possible causes of Bleeding gums as a
symptom.

- Poor dental hygiene
- Gingivitis
- Gum disease
- Periodontitis
- Trench mouth
- Poorly fitting dentures
- Leukemia
- Diabetes
- Pregnancy
- Dry mouth (type of Dental conditions)
- Vitamin deficiency
- Certain medications
- Bad Breath
- Bleeding is usually noticed during brushing, or in the saliva, while spitting.
- Eating of any coarse food items may induce bleeding

Home Remedies

With a pinch of salt soaked in a glass of lukewarm water, you now create a homemade saline solution. Use this to rinse in the morning and in the evening. This will help increase circulation in your gums and reduce the swelling.
No matter how well and how often you brush your teeth, you can't reach the areas between your teeth and below the gums. Make the habit of flossing. Floss comes in very handy. Keep one in your bag or at your office. After meal, floss it!

Life Style

To brush your teeth to gain maximum benefits.
- Push the loaded brush as far as you can into the area where the tooth meets the gum (sulcus).
- Use a vibrating motion (very small wiggling motion) so that the bristles that are forced into the sulcus remain there as you vibrate. Its an agitating type of motion. Do not use wide circular motions. Repeat this action as you move along the gum line for three to five seconds at each spot on both the cheek and tongue side.
- Repeat this procedure until you have completed both upper and lower gum lines, inside and out. Whenever necessary spit out any build up of toothpaste and saliva until you finish. When done just rinse your mouth with filtered water.
- Do this once a day gradually increasing to twice a day. When you are able to do it twice a day, do so for two weeks. After two weeks, your gums should have become very tough and should have a pink-white color.
Water Irrigation
- Another important tool that you should have is a water pik system. Do not underestimate the power of water. Water can do a lot of damage (as you have seen with floods and huge tidal waves) and it can also be your friend.
- An oral irrigator can drastically inhibit the formation of plaque and tartar. As time goes by, plaque, if not removed, turns into tartar. An oral irrigator pulls away approximately 50% of the negative bacteria with each use, leaving good bacteria that are needed to fight microbes.
- A toothbrush is not designed to clean anything more than 1-3 mm, which is a normal healthy gum condition. Therefore an oral irrigator is necessary to reach those areas that cannot be maintained with the toothbrush and floss alone.
- That's all there is to it. If you perform the proper treatments to your teeth and do it right, and use the tools available to you, you shouldn't have to suffer from gum disease or bleeding gums. You'll have healthy white teeth with rosy-red and pink gums that will last you a life time and keep the rest of your body healthy to boot.

Cervical Spondylosis

29 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
A specific form of arthritis, which attacks vertebrae and
connecting bony, and ligament structures, is known as
Spondylosis. Frequently it occurs in the cervical
vertebrae. The spines of majority of people above the
age of 50 have certain degree of osteo arthritic changes.
But they seldom cause acute symptoms. Certain
precipitating factors like trauma, incorrect posture of the
body, pressure while sleeping and excessive intake of
sour food usually precipitate these attacks. In ayurveda
this condition is known as Griva Sandhigata Vata

Pain in the back of neck, shoulder and arms, stiffness of
the neck and even paraplegia occur due to this condition.
The movement of the spine generally aggravates the
pain of the neck. It is often associated with loss of
memory and sleeplessness.

Treatment:

Any external massage is not of much use. Violent
massage with deep pressure is very harmful for the
30 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
patient. Only gentle massage over the muscles of the
neck and shoulder joints should be applied and for this
purposeMahanarayan tailais best suited. This gentle
massage can be given 2-3 times a day .In winter season;
this medicated oil should be gently warmed before
application.

Guggulu, gum resin extracted from the plant is the best
medicine for the treatment of this condition. Ayurvedic
physicians for the treatment of this condition popularly
use a compound preparation named as simhanada
guggulu. It is given in a dose of 2-4 tablets, 4 times a
day. Usually hot water or hot milk id given to the patient
after the administration of this medicines. This medicine
has slightly laxative effects. For the patient to recover
from this ailment, it is necessary that this bowel should
move clearly and regularly. This medicine is very much
helpful for this purpose. For patients having clear
motions, this medicines should be given in a dose of 2
tablets and constipated patients the dose should be 4
tablets. If the constipation is not relieved even by taking 4
tablets the dose can be further increased to 6 tablets.

31 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
At night some medicines should be given to the patients,
which will act as a purgative. Triphala powder is the best
medicine for this purpose. One teaspoonful of triphala
should be given to the patient, mixed with a cup of warm
milk and one spoon of sugar. In the motions become
regular by the intake of simbanada guggulu, then triphala
powder should be given only twice a week otherwise it
can be given every day.

Hot fomentation on the vertebrae of the neck is very
useful for this condition. In a big handkerchief about
500gms of salt should be kept over a frying pan till it
becomes tolerably hot. Then this should be applied over
the neck. Care should be taken to see that it not too hot.
In that case, it may cause burns. Sometime patients
suffering from cervical Spondylosis develop some
anesthetic patches in the back, neck, shoulders and arms
because of the pressure from nervous systems .the
patient is therefore not able to feel the quantum of heat
applied during fomentation. It should therefore be the
responsibility of the attendant to examine the heat of the
bolus before applying it it on the affected parts .This
fomentation should be continued about an hour every
day .After fomentation the affected part should not be
exposed to cold wind. In winter season therefore
32 / 219

immediately after fomentation, the affected part should
be covered with some woolen garment. In other seasons
also the affected part should be kept covered with some
cotton garments after fomentation. It is very convenient to
take the fomentation before bedtime. After the
fomentation the patient should go to sleep so that he
does not run the risk of exposure.

Chickenpox (Laghu Masurika)

Chickenpox is an acute contagious disease, common to
children, particularly between the ages of 1 - 10 years.
Though it has a superficial resemblance to smallpox, it is
entirely a different disease and less severe.

But the good news is that chickenpox is a common
illness for kids and most people get better by just resting
like you do with a cold or the flu. And the really good
news is that, thanks to the chickenpox vaccine, lots of
kids don't get chickenpox at all. Kids who do get it, if they
got the shot, often get less severe cases, which means
they get better.

Symptoms:

35 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
The disease starts with slight feverishness, and pain in
the back and legs. There may be a feeling of chill, and
with twenty-four hours of its onset, small red papules
appear on the back and chest, and, sometimes, on the
forehead too.

- A rash that usually begins on the body and face and
later often spreads to the scalp and limbs.
- It may also spread to the mucous membranes
especially in the mouth and on the genitals.
- The rash is often itchy.
- It begins as small red spots which develop into
blisters in a couple of hours.
- After one or two days, the blisters turn into scabs.
- New blisters may appear after three to six days.
- The number of blisters differs greatly from one
person to another.
- The infected person may run a temperature.
- These symptoms are mild in young children.
- Chickenpox lasts 7 to 10 days in children and longer
in adults.
- Adults can feel very ill and take longer to recover.
They are also more likely than children to suffer
complications.

36 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
Root Causes

Chickenpox is caused by a virus called varicella-zoster. It
may start out seeming like a cold: You might have a
runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, and a cough. But 1 to 2
days later, the rash begins, often in bunches of spots on
the chest and face. From there it can spread out quickly
over the entire body sometimes the rash is even in a
person's ears and mouth. The number of pox is different
for everyone. Some people get just a few bumps; others
are covered from head to toe.

Cramps

Cramps are extremely common. Almost everyone (one
estimate is about 95%) experiences a cramp at some
time in their life. Cramps are common in adults and
become increasingly frequent with aging. However,
children also experience cramps.

Any of the muscles that are under our voluntary control
(skeletal muscles) can cramp. Cramps of the extremities,
especially the legs and feet, and most particularly the calf
(the classic "charley horse"), are very common.
Involuntary muscles of the various organs (uterus, blood
vessel wall, intestinal tract, bile and urine passages,
bronchial tree, etc.) are also subject to cramps.

39 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
The most commonly affected muscle groups are:

- Back of lower leg/calf (gastrocnemius).
- Back of thigh (hamstrings).
- Front of thigh (quadriceps).
- Feet, hands, arms, abdomen

Causes:

It is related to poor flexibility, muscle fatigue or doing new
activity. Other factors associated with muscle cramps
include exercising in extreme heat, dehydration and
electrolyte depletion. Cramps are more common during
exercise in the heat because sweat contains fluids as
well as electrolyte (salt, potassium, magnesium and
calcium).

the various parts of the babul tree are useful. A mixture of
equal parts of the tender leaves of the tree with white
zeera and black zeera should be administered in doses
of 12 gm each, thrice daily. An infusion made of the bark
of the tree, comprising about a couple of ounces boiled in
a pint of water, should be given thrice daily. Another
useful remedy is to soak 3 gms of catechu, and 4 gm
cinnamon for two hours in half a pint of boiling water, and

Enlarge Prostate

A man's prostate gland usually starts to enlarge after he
reaches age 40 years or middle age. This condition is
called Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH).
The prostate gland, which is normally about the size and
shape of a walnut, wraps around the urethra between the
pubic bone and the rectum, below the bladder. In the
early stage of prostate enlargement, the bladder muscle
forces urine through the narrowed urethra by contracting
more powerfully. As a result, the bladder muscle
becomes thicker and more sensitive, causing a need to
urinate more often.

The prostate gland secretes a fluid that is discharged
89 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
with sperm. The gland itself surrounds the urethra, which
is the tube that carries urine from the bladder out through
the tip of the penis. As the prostate grows larger, it may
press on the urethra. This narrowing of the urethra can
cause some men with prostate enlargement to have
trouble with urination. Prostate enlargement may be the
most common health problem in men older than 60

Female Sterility
104 / 219
Ailments & Remedies

As you know, the union of sperm and ovum and the
implantation of the foetus in the wall of the uterus leads
to pregnancy. For its proper development, the foetus
needs adequate and correct nourishment - provided
through the mother's umbilical chord. The mother
therefore should be free from disease during the entire
period of pregnancy - through conception and gestation.
Sterility in females is thus a result of either the
impairment of the ovary, uterus, fallopian tubes, or
hormones controlling the functions of these organs as
well as diseases suffered by the would-be mother.

Defects in the genital organs may be structural (organic)
or functional. To correct the organic defects, surgical
measures have to be taken. Functional defects of the
organs, termed bandbyatva in Ayurveda and caused by
the simultaneous aggravation of all the three doshas, can
be successfully treated by Ayurvedic medicines.

douche. Nis brings about a change in the mucous
membrane of the genital tract that aids the effective
combination of ovum and sperm in the uterus. This
medicated oil is also used internally in a dose of one
teaspoonful in the morning with a cup of milk.

weight of the powder, and taken at night - for three
consecutive nights after the monthly periods are over.

Jambul Leaves :
An infusion of the fresh tender leaves of the jambul tree
is an excellent remedy in such cases. The infusion can
be prepared by pouring 250ml of boiling water over
20gms of fresh jambul leaves and allowing it to steep for
two hour. The infusion can be taken with either
two-teaspoonfuls of honey or 200 ml of buttermilk.

Join & Muscle Pain

According to Ayurveda mostly Joint & Muscle pains are
caused by the aggravation of vata (air) dosha. It is a
condition which is caused by accumulation of ama and
aggravation of vata. (Ama is a toxic by-product of
improper digestion. )This ama circulates in the whole
body and deposits or gets collected at the sites which are
weaker. When it deposits in the joints and at the same
time there is aggravation of vata , it results in a disease
called amavata that all results of Joint Pains.

Symptoms

- The main symptom of this disease is severe pain in
the affected joints. The tissues in and around the
joints become inflamed and movement of the joint
becomes extremely painful. Untreated arthritis may
lead to permanent deformity of the affected joints.
- Fever
- Immense pain & stiffness in affected muscles,
specially stiffness and pain (i.e., fingers, wrists, elbows,
133 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
knees, ankles) in the morning.
- Excruciating pain and stiffness in the joints

Root Causes

The following medical conditions are some of the
possible causes of Joint pain as a symptom. There are
likely to be other possible causes.

- Joint injury
- Joint strain
- Joint sprain
- Previous joint injury
- Infections - many infections cause aching joints and
aching muscles
Viral infection
Common cold
Flu
Bacterial infection

134 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
Causes include both internal and external factors. Ama
associated with Vata (internal moving body air) quickly
moves to different parts of the body and accumulates
where circulation is sluggish or slow such as the hands,
knees and other bone joints filling the blood vessels with
a waxy type material. It is also more common in old age
when Vata naturally increases in the body. Meat diet,
foods such as ice cream, to much concentrated dairy
such as aged cheese or goods of sour cream or cheese
with your meals, cold foods especially during cold
weather which weaken the digestion, heavy cakes,
pastries and candies, packaged and processed foods
with little fiber are the main dietary causes. Gas
producing vegetables and legumes also create more
internal air which moves the toxins to different parts also
the condition. This ama blocks tissue pores and
passages. This causes heaviness and weakness of the
heart which becomes the seat of the disease.

Kidney stone

Urinary stones are generally formed by calcium,
phosphates or oxalates. The main parts of the urinary
tract are the kidney, ureter, bladder and urethra. The
stones are formed primarily in the kidney and sometimes
remain there without being noticed for a long time. In
certain circumstances they are slowly dissolved or
dislodged and come down, and during this process, they
become lodged in a narrow part of the tract, giving rise to
excruciating pain.
Stones are formed in the body because of vayu. It
creates a type of dryness I the body because of which
the chemicals start accumulating over the nucleus, that
ultimately takes the shape of a stone. At times the entire
kidney is filled with these stones and it becomes calcified
and stops functioning. If urine is not excreted through the
kidneys or excreted in small quantities, uremia sets in
and causes many complications. The same phenomenon
takes place if a piece of stone gets lodged in ureter or
bladder.

138 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
Symptoms:

The patient experiences pain in the lumber region of the
kidneys at the back of the body. The pain radiates
towards the genital organs. There might be fever,
vomiting, loss of appetite, sleeplessness and painful
urination. At times blood may appear in the urine.

Causes:

The most common cause of kidney stones is not drinking
enough water. Try to drink enough water to keep your
urine clear (about 8 to 10 glasses of water a day). Some
people are more likely to get kidney stones because of a
medical condition or family history.

Kidney stones may also be an inherited disease. If other
people in your family have had them, you may have them
too. Some people are more susceptible to forming kidney
139 / 219

stones, and heredity certainly plays a role. The majority
of kidney stones are made of calcium, and hypercalciuria
(high levels of calcium in the urine), is a risk factor. The
predisposition to high levels of calcium in the urine may
be passed on from generation to generation.

Low blood Pressure

Low blood pressure or hypotension refers to the fall in
blood pressure below normal. It is a condition in which
the action of the heart, in forcing the blood through the
arteries, is weak. This may be a direct outcome of a
weakened and devitalized system. While the normal
limits are defined by the World Health Organisation as
140 mm / gh systolic and 90 mm/gh diastolic, it has now
been reduced to 120 mm/gh systolic and 80 mm/gh
diastolic in the US. Anything above that is high blood
pressure or hypertension. Anything below is the low
blood pressure.

Symptoms:
142 / 219
Ailments & Remedies

The patient with chronic low blood pressure may
complain of lethargy, weakness, fatigue, and dizziness.
The patient may faint, especially if arterial pressure is
lowered further when he assumes an erect position.
These symptoms are presumably due to a decrease in
perfusion of blood to brain, heart, skeletal muscle and
other organs

Root causes:

The most important cause of low blood pressure is faulty
nutrition .It makes the tissues forming the walls of the
blood vessels over relaxed, and flabby or stretched. This
results in less supply of oxygen and nutrients to the
tissues. Malnutrition can result from a diet deficient in
calories, proteins, vitamin C, or almost any one of he B
vitamins.

Sometimes the blood pressure falls rapidly because of
143 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
loss of blood. Low blood pressure may also develop
gradually because of slow bleeding in the gastrointestinal
tract, kidneys, or bladder. Emotional problems are a far
more frequent cause of low blood pressure. To a laser
degree, prolonged disappointments and frustration may
result in a subnormal blood pressure.

Menopause

What Menopause Means ?

Menopause is the point at which women stop ovulating. It
happens when the ovaries stop releasing ovum - usually
a gradual process. Sometimes it happens all at once.
The menopausal period affects each woman differently.
153 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
Some start early, some start and stop, but most
experience the change around the age of fifty. It usually
lasts up to five years. Although estrogen levels drop
during the post menopausal period, the hormones do not
disappear., The symptoms of hot flashes, dizziness,
headache, difficult breathing, shortness of breath, heart
palpitaions and depression may be caused by an
estrogen deficiency. If one is hypoglycemic, the
symptoms are often mor pronounced. Stress puts a
burden on the adrenal glands, causing them to overwork.
Therefore, the adrenals produce smaller amounts of the
hormones that are needed to help reduce the side effects
of menopause. Hot flashes can be the result of
widespread blood vessl dilation.
Perimenopause is the period of gradual changes that
lead into menopause. It affects a woman's hormones,
body, and feelings. It can be a stop-start process that
may take months or years. "Climacteric" is another word
for the time when a woman passes from the reproductive
to the non-reproductive years of her life.

The ovaries' production of estrogen slows down during
perimenopause. Hormone levels fluctuate, causing
changes just as they did during adolescence. The
154 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
changes leading to menopause may seem much more
intense than those during puberty. The intensity may be
affected by a woman's feelings about aging, including her
reactions to social judgments about aging.

Induced menopause occurs if the ovaries are removed or
damaged as in hysterectomy or chemotherapy. In this
case, menopause begins immediately, with no perimeno
pause .

The time after menopause is called post-menopause.
Theres a growing interest in the natural approach to
minimizing the effects of menopause. Many women are
concerned about the side effects of conventional
medicine and are finding herbal solutions meet their
needs remarkably well. This is something Traditional
Chinese Medicine practitioners have known for
thousands of years.
It has been shown that the loss of the bodys ability to
produce enough estrogen as it ages is related to a wide
variety of illnesses affecting women. Herbal formulations
155 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
are designed to increase the bodys ability to produce its
own estrogen and revitalize body functions. Additionaly
we have found some books that have become effective in
assisting women through this difficult time.

How Menopause Happens

During a woman's reproductive years, the monthly
release of eggs from the ovaries provides a continual
flow of progesterone and estrogen, hormones necessary
to prepare the body for a successful pregnancy.
With age, a woman's body no longer releases the
stimulating signals that induce ovulation of eggs from the
ovaries. The result is a measurable decrease in the
associated hormones and accompanying physical signs
of normal menstruation. Unfortunately, this decrease in
hormones affects the body's ability to maintain calcium
levels and an increased loss of minerals from the bones
results. The net loss of calcium from the skeleton is a
combination of changes in calcium excretion and calcium
absorption

Symptoms of Menopause

As most women approach menopause, their menstrual
periods become irregular - they happen closer together
and/or further apart. Other common symptoms include

- achy joints
- hot flashes
- temporary and minor decrease
- changes in sexual desire in the ability to concentrate
or recall

157 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
A woman may have one, some, or none of these
symptoms. Symptoms can be very unpredictable and
disturbing if a woman doesn't know they are related to
menopause.

A woman's experiences during menopause may also be
influenced by other life changes

- children leaving homeo changes in domestic, social,
and personal relationships
- changes in identity and body image
- divorce or widowhood
- retirement
- increased anxiety about illness, aging, and death
- loss of friends, loved ones, and financial security
- increased responsibility for aging parents
- anxiety about loss of independence, disability, or
loneliness

Increasing numbers of perimenopausal women also
have young children to care for.
158 / 219
Ailments & Remedies

Whatever the cause or circumstance, the conditions
women experience before and after menopause are very
real and sometimes need medical attention. While 10-15
percent of American women experience no symptoms of
menopause, another 10-15 percent become physically or
emotionally disabled for various periods of time by some
of these symptoms of life changes. And all women face
increased risk of heart disease and osteoporosis after
menopause.

Life Style

- That all depends on you. Menopause is a natural part of life, not a disease or a health crisis. However, menopause may occur when many other changes are happening in your. For instance, your children may be marrying or leaving home, your parents may be ill or dying, or you may be wondering what you'll do when you retire from work. That's why it is probably more helpful to think of how your daily activities and lifestyle will affect menopause. For instance, making sure that you exercise and eat right can make a real difference in how you feel and can even help prevent some of the long-term effects that are linked to estrogen deficiency (like heart disease or osteoporosis).
- Physical changes do occur with menopause and with aging. But the changes that happen during this period can be minimized by healthy living and a sense of purpose in life.

Loss of Memory
161 / 219
Ailments & Remedies

Memory consists of remembering what has previously
been learned. For example, when some on e remembers
a persons name , for example, he demonstrates both
that he learned the name at some previous time and he
had retained it during the intervening time when he might
never have once thought of it. Retention is inactive,
remembering is active and both are included under the
general head of memory.

Ayurveda considers both body and mind to be closely
inter linked. According to ayurveda no phenomenon is
exclusively physical or mental. The body or mind might
predominate in one case and might work as a secondary
factor in another case. Thus for good memory as also for
the treatment of loss of memory, both psychic and
physical factors are held to be effective.

Treatment:

162 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
When the power of learning and remembering is impaired
to correct it, a drug called brahmi is popularly used. It is
of two types one variety is called matsyakshi and the
other variety is called
mandukparni
. Both these herbs are equally useful in improving
memory.

They grow in marshy land near perennial streams. The
juice of these plants is used in medicine. About 30ml.of
juice is given to the patient twice daily on an empty
stomach. Both of these are bitter and astringent. It is
therefore administered with some honey to make it
palatable. The fat is well known for its tonic effect on both
the heart and the brain. Therefore, medicated ghee is
prepared by boiling brahmi, along with some other drugs,
in pure cows ghee. This preparation is called Brahmighr
ita . One
teaspoonful of this ghee is added to a cup of warm milk,
mixed with sugar and taken after stirring well till it melts
and gets well mixed with the milk. This preparation is
found to be more useful when the patient suffering from
loss of memory is emaciated.

163 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
The other drug used by Ayurvedic physicians in the
treatment of this condition is called vacha. The herbs
also grows in marshy land. The rhizome or root of these
plant is used in medicine .It is cleaned properly and then
made to a fine powder by grinding. One teaspoonful of
this powder should be given to the patient twice daily,
mixed with honey or cows ghee. Many Ayurvedic
preaparations

Migraine (severe Headache with nausea)

Migraine can be defined as a paroxysmal ailment,
accompanied by a severe headache, generally on one
side of the head, and associated with disorders of the
digestion, the liver and the vision. It usually occurs when
a person is under great mental tension or has suddenly
got over that state.

Persons who suffer from this disease have a particular
type of personality. They are intelligent, sensitive, rigid,
and methodical, and tend to be perfectionist. A migraine
comes on suddenly. The head and neck muscles,
reacting from continuous stress, become overworked.
166 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
The tight muscles squeeze the arteries and reduce the
blood flow. Then when the person relaxes suddenly the
constricted muscles expand, stretching the blood vessels
walls. With each heartbeat, the blood pushes through
these vessels and expands them further, causing intense
pain.

Symptoms:

There is a definite pattern of a migraine. The pain is on
only one side of the head and often radiates from the
eye. The right side of the head may be affected in one
attack and the next time, the concentration of pain may
be on the left side. Migraine attacks are usually preceded
by a short period of depression, irritability, and loss of
appetite. Some persons get attacks daily, others every
month or every two or three months. The main symptoms
of migraine are a pounding pain, nausea and vomiting
.The blood vessels on the affected side of the head
become prominent and pulsating. A migraine gives a fair
warning before striking. The patient sees flashes of light
or back spots or only parts of the objects in front of him.
He may also feel numbness or weakness in an arm or
167 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
leg, or on one side of the face

Root causes:

Migraine may also results from a variety of causes such
as low blood sugar, allergy, infection, excessive intake of
certain drugs a weak constitution, low energy, nutritional
deficiency, overwork, improper sleep and rest, excessive
smoking and drinking. Menstruation in women is also the
important causes of migraine. This forms of migraine
usually abates after menopause.

Male Sterility

170 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
The condition in which a married couple finds it difficult to
produce an offspring is called sterility .The defect may be
either with the male partner or the female partner. These
defects can be either organic or functional .In males the
procreative factors is the sperm. It is produced in the
testicles and ejaculated through the male genital organ
during sexual intercourse. The production of sperm is
regulated by hormones which are secreted by the
ductless glands of the body .For the procreation of
offspring the sperm should be active and they should be
in sufficient numbers in the semen. Sometimes because
of some morbidity, sperm is either absent in the semen or
small in number. In such cases conception does not take
place.

The condition in which the sperm does not exist in the
semen is difficult to treat. But if the sperm are present,
but they are either few in number, or inactive, the
condition can be easily remedied.

Ailments & Remedies
Ashwagandha is the ideal drug for the treatment of this
condition. The root of this plant is used .it is cultivated in
some parts of the country as jungle weed. Its root when
fresh has a smell like that of the urine of the horse.
Hence its name is ashwagandha .The dried root of this
plant does not have any smell and can be taken without
much in convenience. It can either betaken as powder in
a dose of one teaspoonful twice daily followed by cup of
milk each time, or it can be boiled with milk and then
taken. to make it palatable it can be mixed with sugar
syrup. this preparation is called Ashwagandha Ichya. It
becomes a linctus and can be given to the patient in a
dose of one teaspoonful twice daily followed by a cup of
milk. One alcoholic preparation of this medicine is called
ashwagandharishta. It is given to the patient in a dose of
30ml twice daily after food with equal quantity of water.
All these above mentioned medicines, apart from their

Painful Menstruation
In ayurveda this is to known as Rajah-Kriccha. Ayurveda
attributes painful menstruation to the predominance of
doshas, namely, vata, pitta and kapha. The pain may
appear before the menstruation starts and may subside
thereafter. It may also continue till the end of
menstruation. The pain affects lower pelvic region and at
times, it becomes severe. Her might be nausea, vomiting,
loss of appetite and constipation. The sleep of the patient
may also get disturbed.

Treatment:

In ayurveda lower pelvis is considered being the seat of

apana vayu, which is responsible for the elimination of
menstrual blood, stool, urine, ovum and sperm (in
males). Women having constipating tendency or those
who do not develop regular habit of attending the call of
nature, are therefore, suggests a purgative to be given to
the patient for about two days before the schedule date
of menstruation. Ashoka is the drug of choice for the
treatment of this condition. From its pulp the juice is
extracted and given to the patient. Sometimes the juice is
dehydrated and the stuff that is obtained by this is used
in the medicine. This plant grows in all parts of India, but
it has a luxurious growth in deserts and rocky places.

Ashokarishta, which is an alcoholic preparation of this
drug, is given to the patient in a dose of 4 teaspoonfuls,
twice daily after food with equal quantity of water,
RAJAHPRAVARTINI BATI which contains borox in
Bhasma form, asafetida and kumara is also an effective
drug. Two tablets of these medicines are given to the
patient, twice a day for about 7 days, immediately before
the due date of the menses. It relieves congestion in the
pelvic organs, works as a laxative and thus keeps the
patient free from any pain during menstruation.

Pain during menstruation might be caused due to some
organic defect in female genital tract. In that case,
surgery is the only way out. Medicines prescribed above
will be helpful only if the pain is caused by functional
defects.

Diet

- The patient should not be given fried things, pulses and sour things. Last week of the menstrual cycle is very crucial for these patients. They should not take anything that will cause constipation. Vegetable like colocasia, potato, yellow pumpkin and brinjal are to be avoided. White pumpkin, papaya, surana, drumstick, bitter gourd and cucumber are useful. Garlic is specially recommended. Women having this type of complaint should use garlic in a dose of 10 cloves, twice a day .The outer coating of garlic should be removed and it should be cut into pieces. The pungent smell of garlic reduced and if a little bit of butter milk or limejuice is added to it. If however, the patient is unable to tolerate the residual smell of garlic, it should be fried with a little butter and given.
As has been told before, impairment of apana vayu is primarily responsible for this trouble. Its normal course is downwards and if it does not move because of hormonal imbalance, constipation, or any other factor the best thing to do is to add sufficient quantity of asafoetidia to the food of the patient .It can be given to the patient in a powder form and for this it has to be fried with ghee or butter in a big spoon over fire. This makes it brittle and powder can be made out of it conveniently. This powder should be taken by hot water. Because of the pungent smell it emits, some people do not like to take it alone. It may be added with buttermilk or vegetables or rice or bred and taken by the patient.

Lifestyle

- Women having sedentary habits are more prone to this trouble. They should therefore, be treated psychologically. The patient should be asked to be in the company of friends and relatives, especially during the period. She should find an opportunity for walking at least 3-4 k.m. a day. Morning walk is extremely useful for this condition. If she is fat effort should be made to reduce weight. Some physical exercises involving the bending of the waist region and contraction of the pelvic muscles should be resorted to regularly. Sleep during daytime is extremely harmful. During the period of menstruation, she should take complete rest.

Premature Ejaculation
A lot of men and/or their partners wish they were able to
prolong their sexual encounters. Lack of ejaculatory
control might, in fact, be the number one sexual
complaint among men under the age of 50. The details of
the complaint vary greatly though. Concerns range from
the man who will ejaculate within seconds, at the first
201 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
touch or just prior to penetration, to the man who is able
to receive oral and manual stimulation without
ejaculating, but with intercourse will orgasm within a
minute. There are men who report being quick to
ejaculate from their very first sexual encounter and
remain so. There are men who report having been quick
during early sexual encounters but somehow gained
control until suddenly losing control again. Then there are
men who seem never ever to have been bothered by an
untimely ejaculation. Obviously there is not just one type
of ejaculatory concern.

"Premature" or "rapid" ejaculation is also relative to the
man and/or his partner's expectations. There are men
who are able to thrust for 5 minutes before ejaculating
and complain because they had hoped to last another 25
minutes. There are men who last 20 minutes but their
partners complain that they did not wait for her -- or
worse yet, draw comparisons with her last lover who had
set a record for marathon thrusting. Consider another
couple who plays for an hour after a very romantic
evening. In the course of love play the man manually and
then orally stimulates his partner who, in response, has
three orgasms. He then mounts, thrusting hard and deep,
and ejaculates in about 45 seconds. This couple then
202 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
holds each other in the afterglow of their intimate
exchange, telling each other how wonderful the
lovemaking had been. Does this man have a problem?
Not if both are happy with the encounter. What if he
moves on to another relationship and the next woman is
not comfortable receiving oral stimulation to orgasm and
expects 10 minutes of coital thrusting! These examples
make it clear that a man's expectations and/or the
expectations of his partner (s) have something to do with
his labeling himself as having a problem.

In the past, premature ejaculation was defined by the
percent of times the man ejaculates during intercourse
before his partner does. There is, however, a major
problem with defining a man's ejaculatory control in terms
of his partner's orgasmic frequency during intercourse. It
has been clearly demonstrated that the majority of
women (perhaps around 65%) are unable to orgasm with
the stimulation of intercourse alone... never could and
probably never will. For most women the vagina is
significantly less sensitive than the clitoris, which is not
always stimulated in most coital positions. A fair number
of the roughly 35% of women who can make it during
intercourse do so by combining clitoral stimulation with
what they are experiencing vaginally. It is fortunate that
203 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
some positions that work best for the woman are the
same in which a man might exercise better control of his
ejaculatory process.

You might now ask, "What is normal or typical?" Let's
first, however, consider the question, "What is natural?"
In nature the purpose of sex is procreation, and this
process is accomplished by the deposit of sperm deep in
the vagina, independent of the time it takes to do so (or,
for that matter, the partner's satisfaction). Our primate
cousins, the apes, chimps and monkey, ejaculated in
seconds.

As human beings, however, sex is more often for
recreation, typically with great pains being taken to
prevent pregnancy. Sex for humans is an expression of
love, a sharing of intimacy, a form of communication, and
often we feel it is an expression of our manhood or
womanhood. We have a certain investment in being good
at it! However, it appears natural for a man to move
toward vaginal intercourse, thrust upon penetration, and
ejaculate quickly.
204 / 219
Ailments & Remedies

This brings us to the question, then, about normalcy. It is
my position that it is normal for men to sense an urge to
ejaculate quickly and feel the need to exercise some
control. We'll finally look at the question now of "What is
typical?" Although averages stated vary a bit from study
to study, it would appear safe to say that the average
healthy male under 30, with steady vaginal thrusting, will
ejaculate in 1 to 3 minutes, not 15 minutes as most men
would wish.

There are factors that influence how quickly a man will
ejaculate. The younger the man, the more likely it is that
he will ejaculate quicker. The more excited the man, the
quicker he is likely to be, and related to this, the more
novel and exciting the partner, the greater the tendency
to orgasm rapidly. Also, the longer the time since his last
ejaculation, the greater the loss of control. Furthermore,
the more active and rapid the thrusting, the sooner he is
likely to reach the point of ejaculatory inevitability - that
point of no return. It also seems clear that the more
worried or anxious the man, the shorter his fuse will be.
In summary, the man at greatest risk of ejaculating
quickly is the young man who is with a new partner after
205 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
a long dry spell and is very excited, but very nervous, as
he penetrates and thrusts steadily and rapidly.

Men have tried many things to slow themselves down.
Makers of the desensitizing creams have made fortunes
because men believe that if they numb the end of their
penis they will last longer. However, most men are
disappointed with these over-priced creams, as the
ejaculatory reflex is much more complicated than just
superficial nerve endings. Someone once said that our
largest sex organ is not between our legs, but rather
between our ears. There is a lot of complicated neurology
between the end of a penis and the top of the man's
brain! More recently, physicians have been prescribing
medications that have been found to have ejaculatory
retardation as a side effect, but as a behavioral therapist I
have a problem with this. Even if such medication does
work (and it often does not), it will "cure" nothing. The
man can't take it for a lifetime, and in relying on the magic
pill will never learn how to manage his ejaculatory
process in a way to prolong the pleasure both he and his
partner experience. Condoms might help (and should
always be worn in the practice of safer sex), but in a
long-term committed relationship, condoms may be a
nuisance unless being worn for contraceptive purposes.
206 / 219
Ailments & Remedies

Unfortunately, much effort by well-intended sex therapists
has been wasted, for many of my colleagues have not
understood the dynamics of the natural ejaculatory
response nor the important learning components of
gaining better management of the process. In part, the
difficulty has been with them viewing rapid ejaculation (a
term I prefer over premature ejaculation) as a
pathological condition rather than a natural one. Rapid
ejaculation has been grouped with the sexual
dysfunctions, even though it is quite common and the
majority of young excited males will ejaculate rapidly at
least in the early encounters with a responsive and novel
partner. Calling it a dysfunction is essentially turning a
natural process into an illness. In the medical model of
thinking, if there is an illness, there is hopefully a cure.
Thus we find many self-help books promising a cure in
from 4 to 8 weeks! If it is a natural and fairly typical
response, what is there to cure? I am not surprised to
learn that a three-year follow-up study has shown that a
significant number of the men thought to be "cured," end
up right back where they started from before beginning
treatment. Something is missing in the routine
prescription of behavioral homework given with the
promise that faithful compliance will effect a lasting
life-long remedy. Just doing the prescribed exercises will
207 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
not change anything over the long run if the man does
not learn something new.

It may well be that some men are just more sensitive
than others. There is no cure for what is just one more of
the multitude of individual differences we find among
people. However, I had mentioned earlier two very
common features of men who consistently ejaculate
rapidly: High sexual excitement and high psychological
anxiety. If a man is to learn an effective strategy for
managing his ejaculatory response, he must not allow
himself to become overly excited. Yes, ejaculatory control
will cost a man something, for he cannot get caught up in
crazy-wild passion without dashing uncontrollably toward
that point of ejaculatory inevitability. Increasing the
frequency of ejaculation, either with a partner or through
self-stimulation can help. Also staying relaxed both in
mind and body is very important.

There is a series of step by step exercises "prescribed"
by sex therapists called the start-stop method, but it is
not simply starting and stopping that helps a man gain
control. The man must focus in on his steady progression
208 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
toward the inevitable, that point of no return. He must
identify all the internal indicators that he is approaching
that threshold where his body will automatically take over
and propel him to orgasm. This requires relaxation and
concentration. He cannot be thinking of his partner's
response nor even looking at her body. He must stay
within himself and feel his process unfolding. Then he
must stop before reaching the point of ejaculatory
inevitability. Typically the instructions are to start and
stop four or five times before "letting go" and ejaculating.
I always remind men to identify what that psychological /
physical "letting go" really involves. The start-stop
procedure works best with a committed and giving
partner whom is willing to take the time to help. Typically
the "homework" starts with manual stimulation with a dry
hand.

After a few such encounters, a lubricant is introduced, but
the stimulation is still manual. If all is going well, after
several such episodes oral stimulation is suggested if the
woman is comfortable performing fellatio. Remember,
with each of these steps, the stimulation is started and,
as the point of no return is approached, the stimulation is
stopped. The man must not allow his partner to begin
again until he is absolutely sure he is back under control,
209 / 219
Ailments & Remedies
even if this means he is beginning to lose some of his
firmness.

Ringworm

Ringworm is a fungus infection of the scalp or skin.
Ringworm on the scalp may leave a flaky patch of
baldness. In the skin ringworm causes a reddish, ring like
rash that may itch or burn. The area may be dry and
scaly or it may be moist or crusted. The same fungi that
infect humans can also infect animals such as dogs and
cats and infections may be acquired from pets as well as
from infected children .

Ailments & Remedies
Ringworm is spread by direct contact with a person or
animal infected with the fungus. It can also be spread
indirectly through contact with articles (such as combs or
clothing) or surfaces which have been contaminated with
the fungus. The fungus is no longer present when the
lesion starts to shrink.

Root causes:

Ringworm infection occurs in the scalp, the body, the
feet, and the nails. Ringworm of the scalp is common
among children because of the lack of protective fatty
acids in their scalp. The disease spread on the skin and
extends deeper into the hair roots, and also up along the
hair. The affected hair becomes dull and breaks off near
its root. This leaves bald spots on the scalp .the patches
of ringworm on the body are usually round or oval, with
raised pink and scaly rings which show a clean space in
the center. The itching in the infected parts of the body .if
it is not treated for a longtime, the infection becomes
chronic and is then difficult to get rid of.
