The role of an actuary
Their advice is essential to many industries,
including banking and investments,
insurance, healthcare and pensions,
where a single decision can have a major
nancial impact or afect hundreds of
thousands of people. The skills of an
actuary are highly respected and sought
after, and qualifying is not easy.
The qualications youll need
You will need a good grade in A level
or Scottish Higher maths, and usually a
good degree in a numerate subject such
as mathematics, statistics, sciences or
economics. You then join an actuarial rm
and develop your skills while you qualify by
taking our professional exams. This usually
takes between three and six years. If you
have a degree or full time post-graduate
qualication in a numerate subject, you
may be exempt from some of our exams.
Life as an actuary
Studying for the professional exams is
verydemanding, although most employers
provide study leave, as well as help with
tuition fees. However, it can prove very
rewarding as it is a very satisfying and
stimulating career. It ofers intellectual
challenge, an inuential role and an
excellent salary. It is very diverse and the
skills that you will gain from undertaking
the qualication can take you anywhere
in the world. Actuaries are business

How to become an actuary
It makes sense to experience rst hand
whats involved, by doing a work placement.
This also gives you a chance to meet and
chat to working actuaries, and will stand
you in good stead if you then decide
to pursue a career as an actuary.
