Worries
for these
campers

Children creating crafts, play-
ing in a pool or even having a
spontaneous dance party may
seem like typical summer camp
behavior. But for the kids of
Camp No Worries, it means so
much more. It means a place
where they truly can be kids.
Camp No Worries, which
wrapped up its 20th year this past
week, is a summer camp created
solely for children with cancer
and their siblings. The goal is to
give these kids a much-needed
break from the daily struggle of
dealing with illness.
Kasey Massa founded the pro-
gram when she was just 19 years
old while attending West Virginia
University. Massa had been diag-
nosed with a brain tumor at age
11.
I remember exactly how I felt
that summer, that I wouldnt get

to have a summer. I would be
going to doctors appointments
and losing my hair, things no
child should be thinking about,
Massa said. So the camp was
started with the goal of letting
kids who have been affected by
this disease just be kids.
The camps first edition was
held at Camp Ockanickon in Med-
ford during the summer of 1995.
The program hosted 14 children
that year, all of them patients.
The next year, and in all subse-
quent years, the camp has been
open to siblings of the patients as
well.
Families are affected a great
deal when one of their children is
diagnosed with cancer. The ef-
fects are felt by their brothers and
sisters as well, which is why we
wanted the camp to be open to
siblings, Massa said.
The weeklong camp moved to
Camp Inawendiwin in Taberna-
cle in 2001 and is open for chil-
dren ages 6-16. A medical staff
with a focused cancer expertise is
present at the camp throughout
the week to make sure the chil-
dren are being closely monitored.
The camp is free for campers,
and any money raised is cycled
directly back into next years
camp.
Our staff is all volunteers, stu-
dents giving up their summer va-
cations, adults using their vaca-
tion time, Massa said. Because
of that, all the money we raise is
used for the camp, not to pay staff
members.
Supporting a weeklong
overnight camp for more than 100
campers and staff members is a
large expense. Massa knows it
would be impossible without the
help of a charitable community.
We are sustained on individ-
ual donations. Well have checks
come in for the next years camp
prior to us even sending out the
mailer of when it will take place,
Massa said.
Area foundations provide gift
cards for gas costs, and Shamong
and Medford are among local
towns whose organizations and
schools host fundraisers for the
week. The camp is hosted under
the umbrella of the YMCA of
Burlington and Camden Coun-
ties.
Kids staying involved with the
camp year after year is another
reason why Camp No Worries is
still going strong almost 20 years
later. Despite making her feel old,
Massa said its an inspiration to
watch people grow with the pro-
gram.
Many of our counselors and
staff were campers themselves.
Theyve grown up with the camp
and now are ready to give back
every summer, Massa said.

Lord of Life Lutheran Church,
located at the corner of Route 541
and Winchester Court in Taber-
nacle, will hold Jungle Safari
Vacation Bible School on Monday,
July 28 through Friday, Aug. 1.
Children will encounter clever
clues and wild creatures as they
discover whats so great about
God. Preschool children, age 3
through entering kindergarten,
will meet for four days beginning
Monday, July 28 through Thurs-
day, July 31 from 9:30 a.m. until
noon. Registration fee per child is
$15. Children entering grades one
through five will meet for five
days beginning Monday, July 28
through Friday, Aug. 1 from 6 p.m.
until 8:30 p.m.
The registration fee per child is
$20.
The maximum fee per family is
$50 regardless of session. An ad-
ditional per child fee of $5 will be

22nd annual golf
tourney on July 22
The 22nd annual Kiki Konstan-
tinos Scholarship Golf Tourna-
ment is scheduled for Tuesday,
July 22 at Little Mill Country
Club in Marlton. Proceeds of the
event fund scholarships for out-
standing graduates of the Lenape
Regional High School District.
The Konstantinos Scholarship
Foundation was established in
1993 to honor former Lenape Re-
gional High School District Su-
perintendent, K. Kiki Konstanti-
nos who served in this position
for more than 30 years. Through
this yearly golf tournament, the
foundation raises money to con-
tinue Konstantinos work of fos-
tering excellence in education by
awarding individual scholarships
to outstanding students for high-
er education. Currently, 16 stu-
dents per year are awarded a
$2,000 scholarship, with a total of
$393,000 being awarded since the
establishment of the foundation.
The cost per player is $210,
which includes greens fee, cart,
lunch, prizes and an awards din-
ner. Registration begins at 11:30

ts hard to believe, but just last
week, we saw the first back-to-
school advertisement on TV. It took
us by surprise. Oh, no, we thought,
did we sleep through all of July?
Of course we didnt; its just stores
trying to get ahead of the game and
boosting sales in a traditionally down
month.
It got us thinking, though: We have
been presenting back-to-school cover-
age in The Sun for quite awhile now, in
many different towns, but how can we
make this coverage better?
Our quick answer by being better
prepared.
So, even though the beginning of the
next school year is the last thing on
your mind here in mid-July, were ask-
ing that you put it at the forefront of
your brain or at least in part of your
brain for a few moments.
What will be different about this
school year?
Were going to find out. Right now,
our reporters are compiling lists of
questions for school leaders about the
new school year.
Are there new classes students and
parents need to know about?
How about scheduling changes?
Was any work done at the schools
over the summer?
Generally, well be asking school
leaders to tell us about things that
you parents, taxpayers and students
need to know before the 2014-15 school
year begins.
Then, we will pass that information
along to you.
Do you have any questions youd like
our reporters to ask? If so, the time to
act is now. The more questions we get
from you, the better prepared we can
be, and the better information we can
pass along to you.
Maybe you are concerned about the
budget (who isnt?). Or maybe youve
heard about a new program that you
think might be ideal for your child. Or
perhaps you are wondering about re-
pairs that were scheduled for your
childs school.
Wed love to get those questions from

Most school districts have done a lot
in recent years to be more responsive
to questions submitted by the public. It
makes sense. Everyone wants to have
great schools. Everyone wants to keep
taxes as low as possible, while still pro-
viding great service. One of the best
ways to achieve these goals is to build a
true public-private partnership be-
tween schools and the communities
they serve. And building that relation-
ship starts with effective communica-
tion.

Festival lights up the Pinelands

For one week of the year, the darkness
and quiet of the Pine Barrens are replaced
with the sounds of carousels, carnival
games and the aroma of home-cooked
goodies. That week is rapidly approaching,
as the Pine Barrens Festival will celebrate
its 26th year Monday, July 21 through Sat-
urday, July 26.
Its been a great success, another great
community-building event, Father An-
drew Jamieson of Church of the Holy Eu-
charist said. We just want everyone to
turn out and enjoy a great time with their
families and children, enjoy great food and
great entertainment. Its a great time.
The annual festival takes place on the
Church of The Holy Eucharists property
and continues to be the biggest event on
the regions calendar. Jamieson estimated
between 35,000 and 40,000 visitors attended
last years festival to enjoy the family-
friendly atmosphere, while supporting a
good cause.
The money goes directly to the parish
and its upkeep for the year. Its our biggest
fundraiser for the church, Jamieson said.
More than 450 volunteers donate their
time to the event from both within and out-
side the parish.
Ive been here for more than 10 years,
Jamieson said. And its amazing to see the
generosity of the volunteers. They take va-
cation time to come work the festival and
thats just wonderful.

BCC welcomes
Todd Flora to board
Burlington County College wel-
comed Todd Flora, the countys
new interim executive superin-
tendent of schools, to the colleges
Board of Trustees.
Since deciding to leave his Wall
Street career after the 1993 attack
on the World Trade Center, Flora,
52, of Toms River, has had an im-
pressive career in education gain-
ing experience with local districts
and community colleges through-
out the state.
Flora was sworn into the board
on June 17, after replacing Mar-
garet Nicolosi who served as in-
terim executive superintendent of
schools and BCC trustee. Both po-
sitions are appointed by the New
Jersey commissioner of Educa-
tion, who is currently former
BCC President David Hespe.
BCC Interim President Dr.
David Spang welcomed Flora to
the board and looked forward to
the opportunity to build more
bridges between high school and
college.
Flora was a Wall Street broker
and trader until 1993 when he
changed careers after the terror
attack, and the birth of his first
daughter, Angelica, who is in her
senior year at Rutgers University.
Flora holds a bachelors degree
in economics from Pace Universi-
ty, and both a masters degree in
secondary education and an edu-
cational specialist degree in edu-
cational policy and law from
Seton Hall University.
He has taught at Monmouth
Regional and Brick Township
high schools, and as an adjunct
professor at Monmouth Universi-
ty.

The parish maintains all the
booths, and the only part of the
event run by an outside source is
the rides.
Majestic Midways continues
to be great in providing the rides,
and they draw a lot of people to
the festival, Jamieson said.
Its not all funnel cakes and
games as each night of the festi-
val is dedicated to honoring a Vol-
unteer of the Year from the differ-
ent Pineland towns. Volunteers
from the Pinelands communities
of Medford, Chatsworth/Wood-
land, Medford Lakes, Vincen-
town/Southampton,
Shamong/Indian Mills and Tab-
ernacle will be recognized on
their respective town nights.
Each town nominates two peo-
ple, and the festival committee
makes the selection of who is Vol-
unteer of the Year, said Mary
Fischl, chairperson of the Cul-
ture and History and Nature Re-
sources tent at the festival, in ad-
dition to organizing Volunteers of
the Year. The award is given to
someone who has made an out-
standing contribution to the cul-
ture, history and natural re-
source of the Pine Barrens.
Advance sales of ride bracelets
will take place after all masses at
Holy Eucharist, Saturday at 5
p.m. and Sunday at 8:30 a.m., 10:30
a.m. and 6 p.m. as well as at
Russos Farm Market. The ride
bracelets cost $25 now through
July 20.
