Road Trip Ends With A Sparkle

Ginger has been talking about the city of Carmel, Indiana for a long time. I thought we could visit Hoosier
Park on the way, and stay the night in Carmel.

The trip began early Friday morning as planned. My son, JR and his wife Lainie, suggested we take US
Rt. 36 West toward Anderson. When we arrived at Hoosier Park, we explored and exited within one hour.
Just wasnt our cup of tea.

STATEWIDE
CLASSIFIEDS

My Fourth of July weekend started like this: What are we doing over the fourth? Ginger asked me Thursday night.
Well, I thought we would take a road trip. We havent done that in a long time, I suggested.
Where are we going? Ginger asked like a small child would do.
Thought we would go west and find that town you talk about around Indy, I related. That sounds like
fun, she gleamed. Ill make arrangements for Rosie, and we can get an early start on Friday.

Our On Star navigated us toward Carmel and we made one detour to a little town called Broad Ripple.
The only way to describe Broad Ripple is to say its a place for mature, modern Hippies. A little more than
laid back, just two notches above Woodstock.
On our arrival, I suggested we find a place to stop for a cold drink. We missed a turn, and found a little
place tucked behind the main thoroughfare. I had to convince Ginger it was safe, so we ventured inside.
The gentleman sitting beside me, nick named Frog, informed me he wrote for the bi-weekly Broad Ripple
Gazette. He also mentioned that the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra was playing at a near by prairie with
fireworks. Ginger over heard our conversation, and immediately elbowed me that we should go.
After further conversation, we learned that the major sponsor for this event was Marsh Super Markets.
There was a fee of $30 per adult, but that didnt faze Ginger.
After our venture to find the nearest Marsh Market, we purchased our tickets, bought some deli sandwiches,
water, snacks and two folding chairs. This better be good, I thought to myself.
As we were leaving the grocery store, a lady approached me and politely asked, Have you ever been to
the Marsh Symphony?
Were here on a two-day road trip, I replied. Why do you ask?
You probably should go right now, the gates open at 4:30 p.m. and its now 6:30 p.m., she informed us.
Theres always a huge crowd every year.
We arrived at Conner Prairie around 7:00 p.m. The crowds were just as the polite lady had told us. We
searched out an empty space, and set up our little camp. Everyone around us were eating their picnic meals,
drinking fine wine, and enjoying the perfect night. We fit right in.
The symphony played for two hours. Between certain numbers, the American flag was presented often,
with everyone standing with respect. You could see veterans standing in salute posture until the flag passed.
It was good to be an American. You could hear nearby patrons say, Thank you for serving.
By 10:15 p.m. the Symphony was playing Tchaikovskys 1812 Overture solennelle, Op 49 and the fireworks were covering the sky. It was truly a wonderful sight.
ThiS WEEkS boTTom linE: Thanks Babe, that was the best Fireworks display Ive ever witnessed.
It then took us another hour to leave the prairie grounds.

Milton Memories Session Welcomes Church Representatives

The second of the spring Milton Memories sessions was held May 13, with the six-member panel covering more West Milton area churches.
Al Roark shared history of the West Milton Church of Christ; Jean Hoover spoke about Covenant at
Sugar Grove; Gail Cope explained how Covenant at Sugar Grove originated; Virginia Daum shared history
of Transfiguration Catholic Church; and Carl Trimble and Pastor Jacob Kesling shared information about
Grace Brethren Church (better known as the Chicken Church).
The next session will be held June 10 and a new panel will discuss churches from area communities.
To get more information and listen to the full session, tune in to Channel 5, purchase a DVD, borrow
a DVD from the library, or listen to it on YouTube.
If you have ordered a DVD and have not received it, call Barb at 937-698-6559.

Letter to the Editor

~ Child Poverty ~
By Bailey Brewer, Bradford High School Junior
Is poverty our number one concern, especially among children, or
are there other things that need addressed first? Poverty is an issue all
over the globe. Poverty is causing many children to be malnourished,
miss out on school, and families being affected for lifetimes. Although
people seemed to be concerned, it seems that more could be done to
prevent such things from happening.
It may not seem to be a big issue, but many children miss out on
education due to poverty. The problem is not just skipping school;
there are children who are going to school and are unable to focus due
to things going on at home. Many children in other countries such as
South Africa have to work to help their family. Children are either
missing school or spend so much time working, they are too tired to
learn or unable to focus. They also care for their sickened family
members because of lack of medical attention, or they cant afford
the medical help. If they are constantly out of school, working isnt
going to help them when theyre in school trying to learn. Either way,
children should receive an education to further their lives financially.
Nutrition is also a main concern when dealing with poverty. There
are many different programs to help families get the groceries they
need and to help support their family on nutrition. Children, especially, need to be properly nourished. To qualify for these programs,
it takes some effort. When parents arent willing to apply, there is a
major problem. If theyre not working the least they can do it help
out their children and their own nutrition. Many children who arent
properly nourished have issues growing. Its worth it in the long run
to get the help you need.
Many people experience poverty in their lives, but its not something that needs to continue for the rest of their life. It is hard to pick
yourself up and get on the right track. Thats what those government
programs are for. Most children raised in poverty are likely to continue life in poverty. Children who are raised in families that consist
of nonworking parents dont get the best example set for them. Its
the parents job to teach children how to be successful. If parents
arent able to show children its necessary to work, they shouldnt be
able to raise a child. There are some exceptions where parents are
truly unable to work, but in a lot of cases parents are too lazy and
choose not to work. A child should not have to work in grade school,
when learning is the most important thing. If people are choosing to
be parents, they need to be sure that they are able to provide their child
with the essential life necessities.
Poverty has a major effect on children living today. Its necessary
to make sure children are getting a good education, are on a proper
diet, and to teach how to get themselves out of poverty. There may be
a few people who deserve the blame for poverty, but there are many
steps to get out of it. It all depends on who has the motivation.

smoothly and potentially reduce the amount of time it may take to find the perfect gown.
* Wear a supportive, well constructed strapless bra or corset in your correct size. If you will
be wearing a petticoat, also have the right size available.
* Go without face makeup when trying on gowns so they remain clean.
* Try to wear your hair similar to the style you have in mind for your wedding.
* Note that the size of the wedding gown you will wear is typically one to two sizes larger
than your day-to-day clothes. Proper measurements can be matched to designers' size charts.
* It's best to limit the number of people with whom you shop to 1 or 2 trusted friends or
family members. An entourage can be confusing.
* It's always better to order a slightly larger gown and leave room for alterations if you are
between sizes.

Did You Know?

Most brides-to-be, roughly 75 percent, receive a diamond engagment ring,
according to the National Association of Wedding Ministers. Sixty-seven
percent of repeat brides also will receive a diamond engagement ring. After
the question is "popped," the average American couple spends 16 months
being engaged.

Did you know...

Its always a good idea to go
to the post office and weigh a
complete invitation so you
know exactly how much
postage to put on each one;
your mailing costs might be
relatively high if you have
lots of inserts. Having your
invitations returned for insufficient postage can throw your
wedding planning schedule
for a quite a loop!
