Message from Chairman NCRAM 2014

Global economy is migrating from industrial to knowledge based and developing
nations should harness ever increasing knowledge for social and economic well being.
NCRAM 2014 being conducted by J NTUH provides a unique perspective on the important
topic of Robotics Automation and Mechatronics at the National level which integrate state of
the art knowledge in control system theory, mechanical components, computer vision and
artificial intelligence.

Robotics is a rapidly growing field, as technological advances continue; research,
design, and building robots serve new applications, whether domestically, commercially, or
militarily. Robotics is the application of mechatronics and automation to create robots, which
are often used in manufacturing to perform tasks that are dangerous, unpleasant, or
repetitive and can be used to improve productivity. Mechatronics is a relatively new,
interdisciplinary field involving mechanical, instrumentation, electronics, automation,
computer components and control systems. Automation is the use of various control
systems for operating equipment such as machinery, processes in factories, boilers and heat
treating ovens, switching in telephone networks, steering and stabilization of ships, aircraft
and other applications with minimal or reduced human intervention. Some processes have
been completely automated. The biggest benefit of automation is that it saves labor,
however, it is also used to save energy and materials and to improve quality, accuracy and
precision.

Today extensive automation is being practiced in practically every type of
manufacturing and assembly process. Some of the larger processes include electrical power
generation, oil refining, chemicals, steel mills, plastics, cement plants, fertilizer plants, pulp
and paper mills, automobile and truck assembly, aircraft production, glass manufacturing,
natural gas separation plants, food and beverage processing, canning and bottling and
manufacture of various kinds of parts. Robots are especially useful in hazardous applications
like automobile spray painting. Robots are also used to assemble electronic circuit boards.
Automotive welding is done with robots and automatic welders are used in applications like
pipelines.

NCRAM - 2014 will provide an opportunity to discuss Automation techniques that can
be used for maximum efficiency and productivity at various levels for different industries. As
always, the industry is hungry for new technologies and this conference will also give an
opportunity to interact at national level with the best of the technical minds.
Automation is helping industries become stronger global competitors. To succeed, one
needs to integrate the right technology, and the right expertise. Industrial Automation,
Factory Automation, Robotics, Drives and Controls, Hydraulics and Pneumatics
fundamentals and their applications contribute immensely in understanding the various
components which go into the design and development of a state of the art Robots.

During this conference indigenous expertise developed in various interdisciplinary
topics will be exchanged. A large number of authors are expected to present their work in
diverse areas and provide an opportunity for researchers and organisations to collaborate. A

typical Robot will consist of basic elements such as a movable body, an actuator, a power
source, an electrical circuit, a reprogrammable embedded system and a sensory system.

Next generation wearable robots will use soft materials such as textiles and elastomers to
provide a more conformal, unobtrusive and compliant means to interface to the human body.
These robots will augment the capabilities of healthy individuals for example improved
walking efficiency, increased grip strength, in addition to assisting patients who suffer from
physical or neurological disorders. There is a need to focus on research and development of
projects that can demonstrate the design, fabrication and control principles required to
realize these systems which can provide easy human interface.

As Robotics integrates emerging technologies to fabricate the above basic elements
Robots will find greater deployment and contribute to the economic development of the
country. Also during the conference interdisciplinary research towards discovering the
principles underlying the design of artificially intelligent robots will be discussed. How to
create robots that can perform the kinds of everyday tasks that come naturally to humans, is
a challenging task for researchers. Present day research is trying to bring together ideas
from motion and task planning, machine learning, and computer vision to synthesize robot
systems that are capable of behaving intelligently across a wide range of problem domains.
The immense challenges faced by robots with imperfect sensors and incomplete knowledge
of the world operating in unstructured environments has to be overcome using the recent
advances in technologies which are interdisciplinary in nature.

Message from Convener NCRAM 2014

National Conference on Robotics, Automation and Mechatronics (NCRAM-2014) is
being conducted by J NTUH with the main objectives of providing a forum for researchers,
educators, engineers, and government officials involved in the general areas of robotics,
automation, mechatronics and sensors to disseminate their latest research results and
exchange views on the future research directions. This national conference will also bring
together leading academic scientists, researchers and scholars to share their experiences
about all aspects of control, automation, robotics and vision engineering, and discuss the
practical challenges encountered and the solutions adopted.

The theme of NCRAM 2014 is "Better Automation for Better Economy", an
expectation that the ever growing technology in robotics, automation and mechatronics will
help build a better human society. Automation plays an increasingly important role in the
global economy and in our daily lives. Automation is changing practices followed in
manufacturing as well as healthcare, security, and energy sectors. This conference also
aims at providing an opportunity to discuss concepts in detail and explore new ideas in
mechanical, electrical and electronic components utilized in robots, mechatronics and
automated systems. Technical topics of the conference include all areas of robotics,
automation and mechatronics such as sensors, actuators, vision and image processing,
mechatronics, automation techniques, embedded and mobile hardware, new devices and
materials, swarm robotics etc.

Robotics is difficult technology because actions in the world must be coordinated with
perceptions (and models) of the world, physical world is continuous, dynamic, and
accessible only through sensing, sensors and actuators are uncertain, noisy, and subject to
error, and communication of intent requires rich existing knowledge of the world. Robot
sensors are very different from biological ones we have to imagine the world in the robots
sensor space. Current robots are present mainly in factories. Future robots will be doing
complex and complicated jobs in the industries, agricultural fields, outer space and also in
our homes as personal companions to entertain and help us in our daily life.

Mobile robots are integral to space exploration and many military activities. Mobile
robot research needs examination of new robot architectures that provide advanced
manoeuvrability, suspension to adapt to uneven terrain, and modularity to adapt to different
tasks. This is being investigated by coupling differentially steered axle modules with
compliant frame elements that allow relative roll, pitch, and yaw between the axles. While
this system provides advanced capabilities with a simple structure, it does present a number
of research issues fundamental to its implementation which are presently being in focus:
motion control and planning, dynamic stabilization, sensor instrumentation, and data fusion.

As research in robotics become increasingly complex and more like humans, there is
need to have increasing numbers of muscles or actuators within a compact volume. The
goal of this research is to develop new types of actuator systems, architectures, and
methods of control that would allow arrays of hundreds or even thousands of small but
powerful actuators to be arranged and controlled in a fast, efficient, and scalable manner.

Robotics finds application in diverse fields such as for space exploration and related
terrestrial applications. Robots require autonomous software for example software that
drives rovers on Mars, and operations software to monitor and control them from Earth.
Similar design patterns are employed for the instrument-placement and sampling arms, and
newer systems with many limbs for walking and climbing. To enable the robots to interact
with their surroundings, we make them see with cameras and measure their environments
with other sensors. Based on these measurements, the robots can control themselves with
robust algorithms. Several technologies contribute to robust, reactive control systems that
provide greater capability while driving in unknown terrain.

Robotic research is being pursued to create test bed on which to study theories of
cognitive science and artificial intelligence. The goal is to create a robot which is capable of
interacting with the world including both objects and people in a human-like way, so
that we may study human intelligence by trying to implement it. Such interaction requires rich
sensory and motor apparatus: two-armed, two-eyed robot requires over twenty actuated
joints, and twice as many sensors, ranging from torque sensors on motors to the four
cameras composing the eyes. To control and coordinate so many degrees of freedom, of
each joint, limb, lens, and CCD is really a technological challenge that requires extensive
analysis and simulation of several mechanisms. Another approach that is being investigated
is by allowing the robot to interact with its environment and learn a predictive model of that
interaction from the experience itself.
