The Wilds Christian Association, Inc. is an independent, nondenominational, nonprot, 501(c)(3) organization created for the purpose of operating Christian camps and conference centers. We are fundamental in our beliefs, Bible-centered in our philosophy, and evangelistic in our outreach. The Wilds Christian Association, Inc. presently operates a Christian camp and conference center in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina that is open year-round. The camp has a carefully selected and trained sta and averages over 20,000 campers per year. In 2009 The Wilds of New England began ministry at our campsite in Deering, New Hampshire. In this peaceful, rural setting we have experienced good growth in attendance at our summer camps as well as in our limited fall schedule programs. We anticipate a continuing steady growth and expansion of the ministry at this New England location. In addition to providing a God-honoring music publication service as an integral part of our ministry, The Wilds Christian Association, Inc. has also established the CampsAbroad program to assist others in the formation and operation of Christian camp ministries around the world. The Wilds Christian Association, Inc. publishes The Wilds NewsLetter. Why have parents, grandparents, and even young people themselves spent limited fnancial resources for a week at TheWilds? Even though the answer to that question lies within each person, I can tell you why were glad they did! Were glad because God graciously changes lives at TheWilds. Almost every week of every year we have people stop us, write us, call us, text us, and send us smoke signals (well, not so much) telling how their lives or the lives of their friends and loved ones have been changed. This has gone on continually for almost 45 years. Rather than an expense, so many people view a week at TheWilds as a priceless investment! A friend of ours, Walt Brock, co-founder of Ironwood Camp in California, ventured fve sweeping reasons why camp is so valuable in his recent book, Value of Camp. I whole-heartedly agree with these key ingredients comprising the heart of camping. I mix my comments with his. Walts points are in quotes: 1. Hearing the Word (Hebrews 4:12) Each aspect of the program (formal & informal) is determined to piercingly deliver truths to the camper through both the formal and informal teaching and preaching times. Presenting the powerful words of God in the large group, small group, and to individual campers all in one day is the most proftable beneft of all at TheWilds. Constant exposure to the Bible by the careful preaching of the Bible and careful individual counseling are simply the best things camp has to offer. Thats where the changes come from! by Ken Collier President The Wilds Brevard, North Carolina Value of www.wilds.org 3 Romans 10:17 reads, So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. 2. Eliminating worldly influences and lifes distractions A good camp program identifes and eliminates hindrances people have back home. The camp environment disrupts normal habits[and] allows people to reach the point where they are ready to listen. We have heard this expressed by campers for over 40 years at TheWilds. Its true that the types of distractions have changed through the years, but the opportunity to be still and know that He is God has remained a constant at TheWilds. Camp is known for what campers get away from and get away to. 3. Away from home overnight in a new setting To hear people speak of this, it would seem to be the greatest disadvantage of camp. Well, its not! Disrupted routines and comfort zones at TheWilds sharpen the likelihood of thinking and focusing on the things of Godso important in our noisy world. 4. Reflecting on the Word and on life in a Creation context (Psalm 8:3-4) Everywhere you look around this beautiful place, you see the handiwork of GodHis Creation! Hearing the Word in the context of actually living in His majestic Creation is an essential of camp methodology. Eighty percent of Christs illustrations were from nature. Nature reveals and teaches God. 5. Trained staff leading unique, organized activities A trained staff team has far-reaching beneftssafety, knowledge of facility and activitiesunderstanding of mission and training in counseling for salvation and full surrender, and consistent Christian living. One of the strengths of TheWilds has always been the Word of God as taught and modeled by trained, Christ-like servants who comprise the summer staff. They are growing, learning, sincere, enthusiastic, and dedicated. They bring so much hope for leadership in the future of our churches! I can defnitely talk excitedly about the transformations we have seen at camp, but I believe Walt Brock has also captured a reason why camp is worth the sacrifces it takes to get here and the sacrifces it takes to sustain TheWilds. More than fguring out the value of the food, lodging, or supervising in all activities and spiritual lessons, is camp valuable to help what is most important in the life of every young person? Brock's quote: There is a critical time period in every persons life when pride and the hardening of sin is not as big a hurdle to overcome in placing ones faith (and life) in the Lord Jesus Christ (Matthew 18:3-4). Humbling ourselves like a little child is a requisite of trusting Christ. How long do we have before lives are hardened from the deceitfulness of sin? Of course, we dont know. The time may be short, however. The time to present Christs claims on young people is now, when they are young and likely have full lives to glorify God. "Camp has essential value and worth because, in time, we accomplish that which lasts for eternityThe real value of camp must be defned for its eternal, spiritual beneft. We are always pleased to answer questions or engage in discussion about the value of camp. Please call Ken Collier or Ken Hay at (828) 884-7811. We enjoy watching campers and friends excitedly step out of their vehicle, start looking around, and say, Soooooooo, whats new at TheWilds? Truth is, we like to show progress in some way each and every year. Sometimes the progress is subtle and takes the form of a remodel, a new landscaped area, or a welcomed improvement in a building. Sometimes the improvement cannot be ignored, and you can feel the excitement of campers immediately! THATS the one we would like to tell you about coming in the summer of 2015 as the Lord allows the pieces to fall into place. From the beginning of TheWilds, the most rugged, natural, amazing feature of this place God has given to His people is the waterfallsnot just one, but, four of them! The granddaddy of them all is the 4th Falls, but each one has its unique, God- created character. One of them is lesser known than all the rest but may be the most ruggedly beautiful of all. It is a rare jewel even among a county that boasts over 200 waterfalls. The 3rd Falls is a 65 raging plunge onto massive rock shelvestruly an awesome site! Most have not experienced the 3rdFalls because the narrowness of the canyon allows so small an area for safely taking in this astounding, blow-away view. We trust thats about to change in a year of work and fundraising. There will be not one, but two ways to safely hike to and fy over the 3rd Falls. Yes, you saw that righthike to and fy over! Te Hike The hike is hardly longer than the ones to the 1st Falls (25 waterfall) and 2nd Falls (45 waterfall). Hiking down a new, carefully developed trail, you will come to the trails end at a specially laid-out, specially engineered great wooden deck, perched on what we might call a cliff hanging at the edge of the 3rd Falls! The cameras cannot tell the whole story as you hear and see the power of the falls and rejoice in God our Creator. After all these years, the 3rd Falls will be accessible for viewing! Te Fly-over Sure, a helicopter would do nicely, but thats not the plan at all! In the words of Dan Brooks, the Assistant Director of CampsAbroad and long-time program specialist at TheWilds: One of the newest and fastest growing outdoor adventures is ZIPPING. Zipline courses are in every state from the fatlands to the mountains. Each has proven to be popular because they are a safe way to have an exciting experience while enjoying Gods creation. The favorite ones include a view. We have contracted with Challenge Design Innovations, Inc., a leader in the zipping community to design and build a unique double zipline that elicited a comment from one of the consultants who said, You will have the premier zipping venue in the entire East." What does such a zip course offer for campers at TheWilds? Adventure and Beauty. Talk about living on the edge! Stepping off the tower at what looks to be the edge the world, Whats new? Coming Summer 2015: HIKE TO & FLY OVER! by Ken Collier & Dan Brooks Brevard, North Carolina www.wilds.org 5 youll cruise through woods and open up to a canyon 200 below, being able to see a panorama of waterfallsespecially the awe-inspiring 3rd Falls. Youre actually in the middle of the scene, zipping over the forests and the Toxaway Creek canyon! Speed. The adventure comes in two parts. Theres the zip over and the zip back. The frst zip will be at a grade that will allow those with a need for speed to be more than heart-moving! The trip back is more leisurely, IF you consider 600 feet of wire over a canyon leisurely. Safety. Yes, it will be a safe environment. The expertise, the engineering, the inspections, the strongest in materials (anchoring, wiring, harnesses), and extreme inspections will be a built-in part of the project. Fun with a Friend. Both over and back can be enjoyed with someone you know. You and a friend can ride side-by-side, about 10 feet apart, on the tandem zips. Now that's a memory- maker with a friend! These projects (trails, deck, and zip) are obviously not your ho-hum, common, ordinary, every year type of improvements. The cost is as hefty as the planning, and its going to take an outpouring of sacrifcial giving to be able to make this a part of the whole scene at TheWilds for campers and friends. We consider this project as somewhat of an opening up of a newly discovered part of the beauty of this place that God has protected for His people to enjoy through the years. If you can see the excitement and enjoyment that this project could add, we would love you to be a part of putting it in place through your prayers and giving. From Dream to Reality by Dick Reid Vice President The Wilds Taylors, South Carolina The program and maintenance staff members at The Wilds are amazingly gifted and God-called groups of co-laborers with us in the great cause of Christ in Christian camping. Through their joint efforts, and with the generous assistance from many friends, this spectacular project can go from the dream stage to becoming an exciting reality. Dan Brooks and the program staff have thoroughly researched and strongly recommended this unique new activity for the enjoyment of all of our campers. I am not sure if that enjoyment will be in personally experiencing it or just watching others get that sheer thrill of a breath-taking ride across the gorge! Rick Stoner and our maintenance staff are carefully planning all of the details so it will be properly engineered, diligently constructed, and cautiously operated. With our own Ranger Rick involved, we are confdent that it will be both secure and safe. Now the fnal part of the plan is the involvement of friends like you. A generous family who loves the atmosphere at The Wilds and the Truth of God presented here, donated $60,000. That gift, along with gifts from other friends, has covered over half of the signifcant $160,000 cost. Would you prayerfully consider helping with the remainder needed? A gift in any amount is appreciated and will be used in its entirety for this beautiful deck and double zipline. There is also a list below of some specifc items if you would like to consider helping with one or more of those. God is continuing to use The Wilds as a place where campers of all ages can hear the Gospel, be spiritually encouraged, have refreshing fellowship with friends and other believers, and enjoy the beauty and majesty of Gods creation. I TRUST that you will take this opportunity to help us make each campers experience a little more exciting. The Lord chose through His sovereignty to put my wife and me in a youth pastorate ministry in Indianapolis, Indiana, for two years. We were always asking ourselves how to best minister to our teens. Questions about camp were pivotal. Will we take our teens to camp? If so, where should we go? Will they have the money? Will the counselors understand everything this teen has been through? Will my ministry and youth philosophy be strengthened through this trip, or will I have to pick up the pieces when I get back? First of all, please know that I have a long history with The Wilds. I started attending camp in North Carolina when I was going into 4 th grade. I think my parents were just super pumped to get me out of the house for a weekI dont blame them! I continued to attend camp every summer until I went through the CIT program the summer of my junior year in high school. Growing up, going to camp was not optional in my house or in our church. My parents explained that the purpose of getting away for a week was to focus on having good clean fun, getting to know other teens my age, and focusing on growing spiritually. It was at camp that I found rest in the assurance of my salvation, freedom from habitual sin, and eventually surrendered to full-time vocational ministry in the summer of 2003 while working here in the kitchen. I went on to serve a total of four summers during my college years, two on operational staff and two as a counselor. Having this background helped me immensely in understanding the heartbeat of the full-time staff and the Should a YOUTH PASTOR entrust his teens to THE WILDS? by Joe Fant Program Director The Wilds Brevard, North Carolina roots vs. fruits www.wilds.org 7 philosophy that built the foundation for a biblical ministry. It was here that I learned an approach to biblical counseling that was heart-focused rather than actions-focused: roots vs. fruits. This concept radically changed my ministry forever. When the Lord called us to Indianapolis to serve with a youth group, our mindset changed. While at TheWilds we were instilled with the truth that TheWilds was not the local church, but rather existed to serve and support the churches that attended camp. When we set foot into our new ministry we saw camp ministry from a different perspective. For the frst time I started to understand the heart of a youth pastor. I looked at camp in a totally different way. As we lived our lives with the teens we were ministering to, we had the opportunity to cry with them, rejoice with them, watch them stumble, and help them focus on biblical truths that would wash them with Scripture and change their hearts toward Christlikeness. As we began the camp registration process, I prayed specifcally for several teens that the Lord would press on the hearts of their parents and their hearts the need to attend summer camp. Attendance was not necessarily a sure thing. When we drove the church bus onto the campsite that summer, my heart was flled with a mix of emotions. I was glad that the teens were going to be placed with counselors for the week, but my fesh was saying, What do these college kids know about counseling?! They dont know my teens! They are going to say the wrong thing and mess them up forever! As I watched the Lord sovereignly place certain teens with certain counselors, I was quickly rebuked. It was obvious that the Lord had been preparing everything to accomplish His specifc will. As I sat in the services that week, I listened to the speaker exposit and explain Gods Word and afterwards watched the counselors (like a hawk, I might add) interact with the teens, and I noticed something interesting. These counselors were showing the love of God to the teens in ways that I never had the opportunity to. Sure, they didnt know the history with each teen, but in some ways that may have helped. The counselors would take Scripture and give their campers truths that would apply to their specifc situation, then help motivate them to obedience. God, through His perfect foreknowledge, paired specifc campers who were going through hard times with counselors who had been through that same type of trial. During family reunions that week, a time set aside for youth groups to spend time together sharing testimonies, one of our teens shared how the Lord was working in his heart. He stated in his testimony that a specifc truth from Scripture had really clicked in his heart in the service the previous night: Gods Word has the power to change my heart and give me the desire to please Him. I wanted to stand up and say, I have been preaching that for six monthshavent you been listening?! Then I realized that this was exactly what this teen needed. He needed to hear Scripture from another mouthpiece. He needed (Continued on Page 12.) 8 newsletter summer 2014 Technology has changed drastically since Kelly and I frst started traveling internationally with CampsAbroad over a decade ago. In those early days, we were happy to have a chance to send e-mail a couple of times over a span of several weeks, texting was non-existent, and phone calls were impossible. These days, with a smartphone in hand, our team members are often able to join up with the wireless network of whichever country they happen to be visiting. Not only does this allow them to maintain better contact with ministry partners on the ground, but it also lets them keep in touch with folks back home as wella huge blessing for loved ones who have to stay behind! Several years ago, I started sending out informal e-mail updates from the feld to a short list of family and friends. They were sporadic at best but did serve to keep folks informed. Others were gradually added as they expressed interest in these onsite updatesand so our list grew. As technology has improved, our team members have been able to send out updates more frequentlyoften including specifc blessings or prayer needs as they come up. I included a few samples with the pictures in this article. Because these e-mails only go out when we have a team on the ground, they tend to come in furries, and we never know what kind of news they will bring! So why am I telling you all of this? Because I would love to see these onsite updates gain a wider circulation. Theres a lot of neat stuff happening around the world! If you are interested in getting the inside T h e

One of the reasons Im bringing this to your attention now is because we have a number of exciting camping projects coming up in the near future, including China, Mexico, Southern Africa, Hong Kong, Mongolia, and Lebanon. Im guessing these trips will generate some exciting updates! Thanks for your interest in CampsAbroad! 10 newsletter summer 2014 by Rand Hummel Director The Wilds of New England Deering, New Hampshire And Jesus said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going and they had no leisure so much as to eat. (Mark 6:31) Many ask a number of whys when it comes to attending or sending their kids to camp. Why is camp so important? Why should we send our kids so far away to a place like The Wilds? Why is it important to spend $300 for a week of camp? Why are our pastor and youth pastor so adamant about our youth going to camp? In our crazy, controlling world today, it is not unusual for our kids and teens to feel as if they are being pulled in every direction by their schools, families, churches, and friends. Combine the busyness of life with the pressure to stay close to God and many teens feel like they are ready to fall apart. We COME APART BEFORE YOU COME APART. www.wilds.org 11 have all either been there, are there, or will be there. In commenting on Mark 6:31, Pastor Alan Fong from Heritage Baptist Church in San Francisco, California, writes: Sometimes we can work so hard, be so busy, be so involved that we unwittingly allow our spiritual and physical lives to be depleted. A depleted Christian is dangerous to both himself and to others. A depleted Christian becomes crusty(we lose our cutting edge and become less intense),crabby(we develop a bad spirit), andcrumbly(we start to fall apart). (mygodmorning.weebly.com/ devotionals) What teen wants to be crusty, crabby, or crumbly? What parents want their teens or kids to lose their edge, have a bad attitude, or fall apart? So, I want to answer the why questions with some where questions. Where can you send your teens to be surrounded by godly college- aged counselors who have given a whole summer to love your kids to the Lord? Where can your kids and teens experience over twelve teen-directed preaching services in one short week? Where can your teens go to meet hundreds of other teens who love the Lord and are excited about living for Him? Where can teens go to laugh with their friends in a wholesome, godly atmosphere all day long? Where can teens go today to be encouraged to have a personal devotional time (God & I Time) every day that they are gone from home? Where can teens go today to experience theologically sound, meditative music that focuses on God and God alone? Where can you send your juniors or teenagers to be challenged by the 'Truth of God, with the love of God, so that their lives can be changed to the glory of God'? If you are wondering where such a place is, I have two recommendations: The Wilds of North Carolina & TheWilds of New England Thanks for giving us the precious opportunity of loving your teens and juniors to the Lord. 12 newsletter summer 2014 someone else to restate that truth in a way that he could understand and relate to. TheWilds had, in essence, provided direct support for my preaching ministry. Saturday morning we piled into the bus for our eleven hour trip back to Indianapolis. We took time to share testimonies on the bus, and it was incredible to see how much this same theme kept popping up. Phrases were repeated like, I loved my counselor and I really felt like my counselor knew and understood what I was going through, and that they cared about me. My mind went back to what I was taught as a counselor during the staff training weeks for summer staff. I was taught to share "the Truth of God with the love of God, so lives can be changed (by God) to the glory of God." I realized that this is exactly what happened. The philosophy of our youth ministry was strengthened by the staff at TheWilds, and our teens were motivated to obedience to the Word through both conversations and watching the counseling staff live their faith. I now serve as Program Director here at TheWilds in North Carolina, and I hear people mention often when they come for camp, There is just something about this placethis is just what we needed. Now I can look at them and say, I understand where youre coming from. I really do! In Pauls fnal letter before being beheaded and freed from his earthly prison to his eternal home, he pleads with young Timothy to continue running the diffcult spiritual marathon that he had started. Paul was concerned that the next generation of leaders after him would lack the character needed to face the constant animosity and opposition towards the gospel message. This study will unpack the truths found in 2 Timothy to help you gain understanding of the kind of character needed and demonstrate how God can instill such character in your life. TWB122 - $6.95 Sing the Greatness What is greatness? Dictionaries seemingly falter: It is high dignity, high eminence to the most remarkable degree. Mans halting words cannot begin to describe true greatness, but King David in 1 Chronicles 29:11 was right! Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory and the majesty. There is no category of competition, for our God is greater than all! With glad and grateful hearts, we humbly Sing the Greatness of our God! TWS1456 - $13.95
