How to Detect Cardiovascular Disease
Hypertension- blood pressure thats 140/90 or higher
Atherosclerosis- blood pressure rises
Heart Attack- uncomfortable pressure or pain in the center lasting for two
minutes or longer, pain spreading to the shoulder, neck or arms, severe pain,
dizziness, fainting, sweating, extreme anxiety, nausea, or shortness of breath.
Arrhythmia- irregular heartbeat
Congestive Heart Failure- high blood pressure and swelling of the feet and
lower legs
Stroke- sudden, severe headache with no apparent cause, sudden weakness
or numbness of the face, arm, or leg on one side of the body, loss of speech,
trouble talking, or trouble understanding speech, sudden dimness or loss of
vision, particularly in one eye, unexplained dizziness, nausea, unsteadiness, or
sudden falls.
Cardiovascular Disease Treatment
Hypertension- exercise regularly, maintaining healthy body weight,
reducing stress, and eating low sodium foods will lower your blood
pressure and reduce the risk of developing Hypertension
Atherosclerosis- lifestyle changes including quit smoking, eat healthy and
exercise
Heart Attack- Immediate medical attention is needed because a heart
attack is a matter of life or death
Arrhythmia- surgery to implant artificial pacemaker and/or medications
Congestive Heart Failure- prescription drugs
Stroke- immediate medical care, life or death situation
Describe how cancer affects the body
**DESTROYS HEALTHY BODY TISSUE**
forms mass of tissue called a tumor
cells grow into surrounding tissues and
destroy them
malignant- cancerous tumor
benign- not cancerous

Tests and Treatments for Cancer
Surgery- removal parts of the tumor and
sometimes all of the tumor
Radiation- slows down the growth of cancer
cells and kills some cancer cells
Chemotherapy- slows the reproduction of
cancer cells
The 7 ways to prevent cancer
1. Avoid tobacco
2. avoid alcohol
3. respect sun rays
4. diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol
5. exercise regularly
6.avoid unnecessary x-rays
7. avoid known carcinogens
