COMPARISON OF IS 2062 & SA 36

Criteria
IS 2062 SA 36
Manufacture Steel shall be manufactured by any
process of steel making except basemer
process. It may be followed by
secondary refinement.
Steel shall be manufactured by one or
more of following processes - open
hearth, basic oxygen or electric
furnace.

2reedom from
defects
Minor surface defects may
be removed by grinding
provided that the thickness is
not reduced locally by more
than 4% with a max. of mm.
!eduction greater than 4%
but not exceeding "% may
be made only with the
agreement of purchaser.
#lates may be conditioned by the manufacturer or
processor for the remo"al of imperfections or
depressions on the top and bottom surfaces by
grinding pro"ided the area ground does not reduce
the thickness of the plate by3
#. more than "% under the nominal
thickness for plates ordered to
$t%ft& but in no case more than .
'. below the permissible min. thickness for plates
ordered to thickness in inches to mm.
4emo"al of
defects
After complete remo"al of defects and
before welding5 the thickness of the
item is in no place reduced by more
than '%%. 6elding carried out by an
appro"ed procedure and by competent
operators with appro"ed electrodes and
weld is ground smooth to the correct
nominal thickness. Subse7uent to the
finish grinding the item may be
re7uired to be normalised or otherwise
heat treated at the purchaser8s
discretion.
9he chipped5 ground or gouged area shall not exceed
'% the area of the surface being conditioned. After
remo"al of any imperfections preparatory to
welding5 the thickness of plate at any location must
not be reduced by more than (%% of the nominal
thickness of the plate (specification A -(-:A -(- M
restricts the reduction in thickness to '%% max.
9he edges of plates may be conditioned by grinding5
chipping or arc air gouging and welding. #rior to
welding the depth of depression measured from the
plate edge inward shall be limited to the thickness of
plate with a max. depth of ') mm.
