Packing & pricing

The pack was very cute and different from the pack of pasteurized butter. It was made of
plastic so it was very easy to use and store . The box was in traditional color of AMUL- yellow
and white. Once I opened the lid, there was a golden covering over the box decorated with
lot of red hearts , with AMUL lite written over it. It seems that it is a gift from my girlfriend, but I
think the hearts are printed to indicate the healthiness in heart due to less cholesterol in it.

I choose 200gms pack that was available at Rs 35/- (inclusive of all taxes).

Features

1. It contains 26% less fat and calorie content as compared to butter.
2. It has low cholesterol content in it.
3. It is rich in Vitamin A & D - good for vision and skin.
4. It is low in saturated fats and rich in poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)- better for healthy
heart.
5. Calorific value is 189kcal/ 100gms less then AMUL pasteurized butter .

Nutritional information

1. Total fat content is 11% less than butter.
2. It contains only 10% milk fat where as butter contains 80%.
3. The major ingredient is vegetable fat (total 49%).
4. Cholesterol content is 26mgs per 100gms.

Taste

I love the taste of pasteurized butter which is bit salty and very creamy in nature. But the Butter
lite is not creamy looking . It looks like a dried cream that can easily be parted in small
particles. Spreading butter over bread was always a delight to me that I missed after using butter
lite. Applying it on bread seems little difficult because of it non-creamy properties. The taste
is very different from the butter , but it is sufficient to satisfy your buttery needs.

It tastes much better when applied on toasted bread and consumed with jam. You may not
be able to differentiate it with butter in the combo of bread-butter-jam.

Recommendation

1. Well suited for elderly people , to keep their heart healthy.
2. Recommended for persons who want to avoid fat and cholesterol.
3. Highly recommended for persons like me who doesnt want to forego their taste buds because
of weight gain.

Comments of Customer after consuming AMUL LITE BUTTER
I am a huge fan of AMUL products and a regular & heavy user of AMUL pasteurized
butter. When I came to join my job 4 years back, my butter consumption started increasing as it
adds taste and richness to everything- be it bread, roti or subzi. After four years of heavy use I
noticed that my tummy has increased a lot J . And then I stopped using pasteurized butter
because of its heavy fat content. But I was missing my favorite butter very much till the day I
visited a mall.

I have seen many advertisements of Butter Lite, Nutrilite etc but never tried those. So on that day
I picked AMUL LITE and decided to try it

Nutralite spread in margarine spooks Amul

Namrata Singh & Rupali Mukherjee, TNN | May 19, 2011, 01.21AM IST
MUMBAI: When Zydus Cadila launched Nutralite margarine with a mega marketing
push in the largely butter-dominated Indian market, Gujarat Cooperative Milk
Marketing Federation (GCMMF), the maker of Amul, did not anticipate the kind of
impact it would have in a territory it has ruled for so many decades.

If the lion's share of around 70% garnered by Nutralite in the butter-like market is
anything to go by, the brand has surely left a bitter taste for Amul. GCMMF's late entry
into margarine with brand Delicious, which was launched mainly to restrict Nutralite
from making a dent into the butter segment, has been relegated to the second position
with a share of under 30%.

GCMMF had also attempted to retain its consumer franchise within brand Amul by
launching a low-fat version "Amul Lite". But, with consistent brand building efforts,
Nutralite managed to veer a section of consumers to shift to the margarine brand,
making it a leader. Even as Amul focused on strengthening its leadership position in
butter-which was not affected even by the aggression of new entrants like Britannia-the
margarine market has grown in its backyard to gain a size of around Rs 300 crore.
Margarine also continues to remain a popular substitute for butter among restaurants
and dhabas which utilize this low-cost ingredient to give a "butter-like" taste.

"Since, the time Zydus took over this brand from Carnation Nutra-Analogue Foods in
2006, it has been performing to the company's satisfaction. Zydus had improved the
product formulation through its own R&D initiatives to meet international standards,''
said a source.

What appears to have clicked for Nutralite is its USP on the health plank. Zydus
Wellness is said to have grown by a CAGR of 28% in the past five years. Margarine is a
substitute for butter which has overtaken the butter segment in many markets across the
world. In India it is one-third (around Rs 90-100/ kg) the price of butter. However, the
debate of whether butter is better or margarine continues to rage. Recently, Amul
launched a major offensive with advertisements in favour of butter. The advertisement
propagated the properties of butter being better than margarine. However, when asked if
Amul would continue with its margarine brand, GCMMF's managing director R S Sodhi
said: "We are in the spreads market and would continue with Delicious so long as there
are other brands in the margarine market. Because Nutralite came into the market, we
came up with Delicious. But we do not want our butter segment to get affected. Butter
will continue to be the main category."

The size of the butter market in India is Rs 1,200-1,400 crore, where Amul leads with a
fair share of over 85%. Skeptics believe that margarine had become a commodity like
vanaspati and could lose steam over the years. However, given margarine's track record
globally, many multinational companies could consider taking a plunge in this segment
in India. A year ago, there was speculation that Unilever could be considering launching
its margarine brand in India. Unilever's margarine brands include Rama and Blue Band.
However, this did not fructify and Hindustan Unilever entered the spreads market
instead, under Kissan. Other multinationals which have large margarine businesses
globally include Bunge, which acquired the Dalda brand in India some years ago. Bunge
had globally acquired the margarine brand from Benecol and is the second largest player
in the world after Unilever. If MNCs enter this segment, there could be competition not
just for Amul but Nutralite as well. Many me-too brands have also sprung up after
Nutralite's success.
