URBAN SIGNAGE

PURPOSE:
To give information to the people by using panel, light and
others and/ or specified usages.

Urban Information System has criteria: digitally and
not digitally; indoor and outdoor. Urban signage is a
part of urban information system.

Good location, readable, attractiveness, and makes
clear the people are required.

Urban signage should be designed professionally. It
means; using international criteria and requirements
to design urban signage are required.

Urban signage should be managed by the professional
urban management. In this case, maintenance is the
first priority.

INDOOR SIGNAGE

The use of indoor signage:
Housing
Public building

HOUSING:
The use of indoor signage in housing is very limited.
Several people use indoor signage by special
purposes, e.g. for decoration.
The use of outdoor signage in housing is very
recommended. As a public facility, housing needs
outdoor signage for residents and guests.

PUBLIC BUILDING:
Some public building very strong recommended to use
indoor signage are: terminal building (railway stations,
bus stations, airports, seaports), offices, shopping
mall, campus, and hotels.
Assortment of indoor signage in the public building
are: guidance panels and light, advertisement panels
and light, information panel and lights.

OUTDOOR SIGNAGE

The use of outdoor signage:
Area signage
Road signage
Pedestrian signage

AREA SIGNAGE:
The use urban signage in the urban area is very
important and fully recommended.
Urban area which are required to use area signage
are follows: civic center, business area, campus area,
housing area and estate, industrial area and estate,
and other areas by numbered of people.
By watching the signage, people could feel well
inform. It means urban signage is required; Good
location, readable, attractiveness, and makes clear the
people are required

ROAD SIGNAGE/ TRAFFIC SIGNS:
Traffic signs are devices placed along, beside, or
above a highway, roadway, pathway, or other route
to guide, warn, and regulate the flow of traffic,
including motor vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians,
equestrians, and other travelers.

Signs should only be placed only where warranted by
facts and engineering studies.
Signs should be placed as necessary for safety and
proper regulation of traffic. However, the use of too
many signs in a given location may reduce the
effectiveness of all the signs at that location.

PEDESTRIAN SIGNAGE:
Pedestrian signals are special types of traffic signal
indications installed for the exclusive purpose of
controlling pedestrian traffic.

ROAD SIGN SHAPES AND THEIR
MEANING

Traffic signs convey information to travelers
through their shape, color, message, and
placement.

Pedestrian Signals

WHEN ARE PEDESTRIAN SIGNALS USED?

Pedestrian signals are installed for a variety of
reasons. Frequently they are installed:

When the layout of an intersection is such that
vehicular indications are not visible to
pedestrians.
If pedestrian volumes are very heavy, as in a
central business district.
When the traffic movements at an intersection
are so complex that special efforts have to be
made to communicate with pedestrians.
If a special pedestrian path has to be defined
across a complex intersection.
If pedestrians have to be given exclusive use of
an intersection in the interest of safety.

HOW DO PEDESTRIAN SIGNALS FUNCTION?

There are two types of pedestrian signals; those
with pedestrian detectors ("Push-to-Walk" buttons)
and those without detection. Pedestrian detectors
are normally installed at intersections when:

Arrival rates of side street vehicles are
occasionally low and pedestrians experience
undue delay waiting for a vehicular indication
to turn green.

Vehicular green indications are too short to
allow for a pedestrian to safely cross a wide
street - in these instances the pedestrian push
button causes the signal controller to "extend"
the green time for both vehicles and
pedestrians.
Pedestrians can get "trapped" on median
islands in the middle of a complex intersection.

WHAT DO THE INDICATIONS MEAN?

Pedestrian signals consist of the illuminated words
WALK and DON'T WALK, or the illuminated symbols
of a walking person and an upraised hand.

The meanings of the indications are as follows:

A steady, illuminated WALK display, or a
steady illuminated symbol of a walking
person, means that a pedestrian may
enter the roadway and proceed in the
direction of the indication.

A flashing, illuminated DON'T WALK
display, or a flashing illuminated symbol
of an upraised hand, means that a
pedestrian may not start to cross the
roadway in the direction of the indication,
but that any pedestrian who has partly
completed his crossing during the steady
WALK indication may continue across.

A steady, illuminated DON'T WALK
display, or a steady illuminated symbol of
an upraised hand, means that a
pedestrian cannot legally enter the
roadway.

AREA/ GENERAL SIGNAGE

PURPOSES:
To give information to the people about substances of the
area, as follows: type of area, facilities in the area,
something forbidden in the area, etc.

Good location, readable, attractiveness, and makes clear
the people are required

The use for area:
civic center
business area
campus area
housing area and estate
industrial area and estate
and other areas by numbered of people.
