March Deaf Club
On Friday 1
st
February, the usual members turned up to listen to a talk given by a
gardener but unfortunately, it was cancelled for the second time. Instead Godfrey
Palmer talked about learning gardening at Gorleston Deaf School which was very
interesting. He said he was given a plot of land at the school, Billy Rodwell and Rod
Hopkins were also given plots, they learned how to work on an allotment, what to
grow and so on. Godfrey said they were very proud to grow lots of vegetables but as
it was summer holiday, it was all gone, probably the Headmaster took them!!
Questions were asked about gardening by everyone at the club meeting such as how
to prune roses, how to get rid of ants, moles etc.
Later, we had an interesting conversation about the flooding on the coast from
Lincolnshire to Essex because it was the anniversary of the terrible floods. It
happened 60 years ago, we were asked if we had stories about it. One member from
Kings Lynn talked about the floods there, another member recalled her relatives were
affected in Mablethorpe. We also discussed the latest news about the discovery of the
burial and whether it was King Richard III. (On Monday 4
th
February, it was confirmed
on the main news that it was indeed the bones of Richard III found underneath a car
park in Leicester).
Tea/coffee and biscuits were
provided by Catherine Palmer,
thanks to Catherine.
It was an enjoyable evening
despite the speaker could not
come. The discussions by the
members were interesting and
intelligent too.
ELAINE HEATH
Quite a lot of people came to our
club even though the weather was not so good. However, inside the hall it was warm
on Friday 4

On Friday 1

entered and who won? Oh no its me again. I won in 2005, 2007 and this year. See

Cambridge Deaf Club
On January 19th eight of us went to the Red Lion restaurant in Whittlesford and
enjoyed a meal. Afterwards we all went back to my house for cup of tea and a chat. It
was a great evening.
Unfortunately, on the 16
th
February Sally was unable to come to show us how to
make boxes and cards so we played dominoes. It was good fun; I think Steve won
most of the games!
On the 16
th
March we are going to have a quiz which will be good fun!
On the 20
th
April, Sally will come to show us how to make boxes. Please let me know
if you are interested as there will be small charge for paper. Afterwards I hope Steve
will teach us how to play blind dominoes.
Does anybody know how to play cards or any other games? If so are you able to
teach us for 1 to 2 hours and we will still have time to chat.
I am trying to make a programme for every time we meet at Deaf Club but, I cant do
that without ideas or support from you all. Please send me any ideas you have so I
can try organise them.

12/1/13
We have a new pool/snooker table, which is great. We also played games other
games, Four Corners and Uno.
9/2/13
We had a Quiz night called "OBJECT". Peter Smith and Tony Vanterpool won so they
shared a box of chocolate.
E.g. Picture of shades of a colour is green and picture of the house? The answer:A
Greenhouse.
9/3/13
We had a Dominoes
Competition and about 20
people joined in. We then
divided them into small
groups. There were four
groups, the winner from each
group went on to play in the
final. In the final they played
giant dominoes, Rita Kettle
was the winner and her prize
was a homemade cake and DVD. Well done Rita!

Huntingdon Deaf & Hearing Club/BSL Friend Club
The Deaf & Hearing group continued to meet monthly at St Barnabas Church and on
average between 15 to 20 regulars attended. You can see that on March 8

group had a debate to discuss about changing the name of the group. It was decided
that we add BSL Friend Club as well as Huntingdon Deaf & Hearing club Many
thanks to Marion Gossland for doing the refreshment for the past three months.
Newcomers are very welcome to join with us and we are trying to organize different
games every month. List of dates for the Deaf & Hearing club are elsewhere in the

Editors article
It had been a long cold winter and it is only a matter of time before we have some
warmer sunnier weather. I am looking forward to Spring and then Summer. I am sure
you will have plans for the coming Summer.
As you can see in front page of the newsletter, we have two new members of staff
who started at CDA recently - Catherine Martindale (Admin Officer) and Liz Hilton
(Finance Officer). We wish them all the best in their new posts and I am sure they will
do well. Also there had been some changes on the Trustee Board which I am sure
Janie will mention in her report.
We are very pleased to see a very good number of Deaf people attending the
Afternoon Coffee get together at Care Home in Wisbech, (home of one elderly deaf
lady) so far we had two sessions and twice twelve people attended
I thought the Dementia Presentation at CDA went very well and it was very well
attended. I would like to say a big thank you to Sally Skeldon and Christine Tarrant
for organising and doing their part. You can see Sallys report somewhere in the
newsletter. We hope this will be the first of many more presentations to come.
The BSL Walks are back with two new dates. Please do make an effort to come and
join us. It is fun, healthy and a good way to keep fit!

Deafness & Dementia
Emma Fergusson- Coleman, a researcher from The Deaf Dementia project based at
Manchester University, delivered a fascinating presentation on the 26
th
February,
concentrating on Deaf people who have Dementia. The research project focuses on
the Deaf Community, who predominantly use British sign Language as their preferred
method of communication access the right support, diagnosis and information relating
to this illness. This project identifies the lack of BSL awareness that is demonstrated
in society that creates barriers and prevents the Deaf community accessing support
and information. This presentation provided a group of people the knowledge to
recognise not only the signs and symptoms, but also how to support individuals in the
community who may show either early or latter signs of this progressive illness and
also to sign post to access appropriate support.
On behalf of Cambridgeshire Deaf Association, I would like to thank Emma for this
insightful presentation. This was a successful event and hopefully the beginning of
more to come. Please check the website for future information events.

Cambridge Hard of Hearing Club
THE CAMBRIDGE HARD OF HEARING CLUB HELD THEIR MONTHLY MEETING AT
THE MEADOWS CENTRE STARTING AT 2.30 PM ON THURSDAY THE 28
TH
OF
FEBRUARY 2013

Chairman Brian Downham welcomed those present and after some club notices
and a short delay introduced Lee Searle from CBM. Originally known as Christian
Blind Mission, Lee explained that CBM is the largest worldwide disability charity
assisting 36 million of those experiencing disability last year. The CBM are the
only disability charity that works with the UN. Over the last 18 months CBM have
helped over 2 million children with deafness impairment.
The CBM was started 120 years ago by German Minister Pasteur Christofel when
he saw in Turkey people giving to beggars who could see but not to blind
beggars.
Lee informed us that there are over 275 million children in the world experiencing
deafness 80% in Africa because there is little treatment there. CBM run their own
treatment centres and Lee enlarged on the work of one in Kenya. The untreatable
are taught along with family members to sign and given solar powered hearing
aids, running costs 60p each pa. Letters of thanks from the children explaining
their, circumstances were passed round the meeting. Examples of how
profoundly deaf children have excelled in African life once treated were given.
On average CBM perform 14800 ear surgeries each month to prevent deafness
and with partner National Institute for the Deaf teach 89,000 children to sign.
Only one person in the meeting had heard of CBM. CBM only opened in the UK 15
years ago and went to churches at first and churches flooded them with money.
CBM do not pay for advertising or for celebrities to advertise their work.
After answering a number of questions, the chairman invited the meeting to
thank Lee in the usual manner for his talk, which he gave at very short notice.
There was a hearty response. The meeting then closed after being reminded of
the next meeting on 28
th
of March when Peter Carter will deliver a talk on
Poaching.

Peterborough Deaf Drop in
Welcome the year of 2013, January
was great with children playing in the
snow but it was also disappointing for
the adults as we had to cancel the
Deafness and Dementia at CDA.
Luckily they rearrange a new date for
February. Some went by car and
another group by train. Everyone said
it was a great experience and had an
impact on understanding Dementia.
They talked and shared the
information with us.

We had some new faces join us. Even
though they might not be BSL users
but are welcome and we are happy to
teach them BSL and learned their
different sign languages.

During February half term, 30 people
went to Jimmy Spice and enjoyed the
meal and social evening. The long
table only had 28 seats. The last
couple arrived a bit late, we joked with
them about having a candle light
dinner for Valentines day. Jason
Sharpe pretended to work as a
waitress and serve us! After the meal,
some on to a pub and the rest went to
bowling with the children.

Fenland Deaf Drop-in
On 14
th
February, there were three birthday celebrations, these were Christine
Tarrant, Ann Ratcliffe and Peggy Rodwell. We were pleased to see Peggy Rodwell
again as she had not been well but is much better now. Some Deaf People went
to see Hilda Boehm at her Wisbech Care home. She is fine and well.
On 14
th
March we had hot cross buns and Easter eggs for raffle prizes.

Peterborough Coffee Morning
Hello everyone!
The move to Ricos was the best thing we did!!
The room at Asda was not ideal. The
atmosphere in Ricos is fantastic and the owner
has allowed us to use an area of the caf where
we will not be in the way of customers. About
25-30 people attend the Coffee Morning. If we
get more people we will take over the caf! The
owner is very pleased as it is bringing extra
business for them. Everyone buys their own
drink much better than Debbies Tea and
Coffee!! We have had some laughs at the
Coffee Morning. For the last two sessions I
arranged a quiz, the first one was a General Knowledge quiz, the second one was
a Flag Quiz. Everyone enjoyed the quizzes and I think they are expecting one
every time now! I asked for help for topics so at the next Coffee Morning we are
doing Famous Faces quiz. We had a lot of quiz ideas - thank you :-) One and a
half hours is not long enough for Deaf Coffee Morning a few people stay
afterwards.
If they anyone wants to stay after the Coffee Morning has finished please buy a
drink and/or something to eat. I dont want to upset the owner thank you.

It was good to meet the new Chaplain for the Deaf Andrew Taylor-Cook . If you
havent met him yet I am sure you meet him in the Deaf Community soon.
The Coffee Morning will be open on the 1st April even though it is a Bank Holiday
(Easter).
Looking forward to the next Deaf Coffee Morning, see you there.
DEBBIE POWELL (Co-ordinator)

Computer Training
Brendan Casey is now available again as a volunteer to help all
deaf people with Computer training and he is being able to
communicate on a One to One basis using BSL. We have been
very lucky to have Brendan as it is very difficult to find someone
who has his skills in using computers as well as being able to use
a variety of different communication methods to meet a wide
range of communication needs! iPads are one of the things he
can help you with and help to understand how to get the best out
of it.
Please do let me know if you need any help with understanding how to use a
computer and I can arrange a training date with you to meet Brendan Casey.

Personal Independence Payment (DLA)
From 8 April 2013 the Government is introducing a new benefit called Personal
Independence Payment (PIP) to replace Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for
eligible working age people aged 16 to 64.
The Government is committed to supporting disabled people to lead independent
and active lives. It recognises that disabled people can face additional challenges
to leading independent lives and is committed to maintaining an extra-cost, non-
means-tested disability benefit to support disabled people.
The short address for this page is: www.dwp.gov.uk/pip
PIP Toolkit for support organisations and advisers
Claimants seek information about benefits and services from a range of sources
other than DWP. This toolkit for support organisations and advisers provides
general awareness, fact sheets about PIP, copies of PIP letters and suggested
text to use in your own communication. It also includes some practical steps you
could consider as part of your preparations for PIP.
CDA NEWS
Personal Independence Payment (DLA) (Cont)
What the change means
Disability Living Allowance will end for everyone of working age even if they have
an indefinite period award. By working age we mean everyone who is aged 16 to
64 on the day Personal Independence Payment is introduced.
There are no current plans to replace Disability Living Allowance for children
under 16 and people aged 65 and over who are already receiving Disability Living
Allowance.
Personal Independence Payment is based on an assessment of individual need.
The new assessment will focus on an individuals ability to carry out a range of
key activities necessary to everyday life. Information will be gathered from the
individual, as well as healthcare and other professionals who work with and
support them. Most people will also be asked to a face to face consultation with a
trained independent assessor as part of the claim process.
When will PIP be introduced
New claims
April 2013 Personal Independence Payment will be introduced for new
claims in Merseyside, North West England, Cumbria, Cheshire and North
East England. During this period new claimants in all other parts of the
country will continue to claim Disability Living Allowance as now.
June 2013 new claims for Personal Independence Payment will be taken
from all parts of the country.
Existing DLA claimants
Existing Disability Living Allowance claimants who are aged 16 to 64 on 8 April
2013 or reach age 16 after that date will be affected by the introduction of
Personal Independence Payment, even if they have an indefinite or lifetime
award of DLA.
We will write to all existing DLA claimants in February and March 2013 with more
information about PIP in their usual annual letters that tell them what their new
benefit rate will be.
Personal Independence Payment is being introduced in stages over a number of
years.
October 2013 if an individual reports a change in how a health condition
or disability affects them, they reach the end of an existing award of DLA
(and havent already received a DLA renewal letter), or they are
approaching the age of 16, then we will invite them to claim Personal
Independence Payment.
From 2015 we will start to contact everyone else receiving DLA (unless
they report a change in how their health condition or disability affects
them, or if their award is due to end). We will write to individuals in plenty
of time and they do not need to contact DWP now.
There is no automatic transfer from Disability Living Allowance to Personal
Independence Payments

BSL - 10th year recognition
anniversary (18
th
March)
In this anniversity year, the BDA is
working to get politicians to focus again
on BSL.
This March sees ten years since the government first recognised British Sign
Language as a UK minority language. Now the British Deaf Association (BDA) is
working to get BSL back onto politicians' radar screens.
David Buxton, Chief Executive of the BDA, said,
"Ten years on from recognition, we need the government to re-engage with the
many thousands of people who use British Sign Language, whether as their first
language or alongside English. There are still too many barriers that prevent Deaf
people from participating in, and contributing equally to, society."
"We must keep campaigning for a BSL Act to improve Deaf people's lives in the
long term. In the short term, we must also campaign to get some specific
improvements to Deaf people's lives. There are lots of changes that local
authorities and health services could make - we will need a campaign on the
ground as well as at Westminster."
"In this anniversary year, we want to work with the Deaf people across the
country who are crying out for change. We want to give them the training and
the campaigning tools to win improvements to services where they live."
