A MONTHLY PUBLICATION OF CALVARY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
UNDER the STEEPLE
Family Worship
encouraged this
August

While Calvary offers

outstanding childrens
programming each
Sunday, we also value
the time a family spends
in worship together. For
the first 3 weekends in
August (3, 10, 17),
parents and guardians
are invited to worship
with their children during
Sunday services.
Kidventure and CSM
programming will not be
available these
weekends, and it is our
hope that these youth
with have an opportunity,
some for the first time, of
worshipping together
with their Calvary family
in the Worship Center.
Nursery care will be
available for young
children during these
dates.

Please plan to join us

with your familiesin
worship this August!
Starting off School with a Blessing of the Backpacks
Calvary is starting the new school year
with a Blessing of the Backpacks at each
service on Sunday, August 17. We
believe that prayer is a foundational way
to prepare students, teachers, and
administrators to make a positive impact
in our community. The blessing will
consist of two elements:

First, all Calvary students, teachers and

administrators are encouraged to bring
their backpacks (or computer backs,
briefcaseswhatever represents school)
to service. There will be a special time of
prayer during the service.

Second, the entire congregation is

encouraged to bring school supplies to
service that day. These will be given to
Calvary teachers who need to replenish
their supplies throughout the year.

Please plan to join us on August 17 as we

bless those returning to school and
become a blessing for teachers in our
congregation who touch the lives of so
many in our community.

Missionary Dr. Elma Jocson, in a letter to
Calvary Outreach Committee member
Carroll Bross, regarding a recent typhoon
affecting the Philippines:

Too many times, I get inquiries about

disasters that are far from the metro
Manila area. But this time we were in the
path of the typhoon.

We were near the eye of the storm.

Monday afternoon was very warm and too
sunny, and we were surprised to hear the
news that classes for the following day
were suspended, from preschool to high
school. Why, we asked. The weather
report said there was to be a strong 3rd-
level typhoon. There was no indication of
such! Tuesday morning was normal. But
after noon, the sky became ominously
dark. Then came the howling wind.

This typhoon was quick to pass, its

presence felt only for 24 hours. There was
less waterfall, so no flooding. But the
winds have uprooted big trees and
[snapped] big branches. Roofs of houses
were blown off and stronger buildings
were left with broken windows.

There is an international training here by
the UMC-GBGM for Global Mission
Fellows. There are 47 young adults from
all over the world. The site was on the
typhoon path. The buildings where they
are billeted have been heavily damaged,
and t he del egat es wer e shaken.
Thankfully, all are safe & recovered.

My mother and I are also safe, just busy

clearing debris from the storm. We have
one church member whose roof was blown
off, so the church is rallying behind them.

I appreciate you very muchthanks very

much for your love.
Please continue to keep Dr. Jocson, her
mi ni st r y and t he peopl e of t he
Phi l i ppi nes i n your thoughts and
prayers.

Calvary Trustees, Building Committee, pastors and members were on hand July 14 to receive a signicant gift
from the Association of Illinois Electric Cooperatives, a grant which helped to fund Calvarys new geothermal
system. What a blessing this is to help us be good stewards of what God has entrusted to our church family!
