Welcome to the website of the International Seminar about Digital
Portfolios in Education!
The Socrates Comenius 2.1 Project Digital Portfolio as a strategy for
teachers professional development organised a two days seminar
focussed on the use of digital portfolios for educational purposes. The
seminar was held in Helsinki, Finland, from May, 22 to 24, 2008.

Call for Papers is closed!
CALL FOR PAPERS INVITATION
We welcome research paper proposals, good practices examples, workshops
and round tables on digital portfolios, the main topic area of the European
Project: Digital Portfolio as a Strategy for Teachers Professional
Development. The project is being developed under the Comenius 2.1
framework and has the objective of enhancing the educational possibilities of
digital portfolios
The Project Partnership welcomes different perspectives and approaches from
different European countries in order to give participants a wider view on the
usage of these educational tools.
You are invited to send abstracts to the Organising Committee before 28th
February 2008.
Abstracts should be 250-300 words.
Your proposal will be analysed and all accepted papers will be properly
acknowledged.
Acceptance of abstracts will be announced on 15th March 2008.
Papers will be presented at the conference in Helsinki, Finland, from May,
22nd to 24th 2008.

Programme
During two days there will be twenty different paper presentations and two
keynote speeches, which will offer you a wider perspective of the different
approaches of this theme. The organisation is pleased to inform you that the
seminar will count with a large professional group of 86 people coming from
10 different countries, who accepted the challenge of sailing along in this
voyage of discoveries. This demonstrates a strong interest around the subject
of Digital Portfolios.

Keynotes
Philip C. Abrami is Professor, Director, and Research Chair at the
Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance, Concordia
University. He is also a founding member of CanKnow: The
Canadian Network for Knowledge Utilization. Phil is interested in
the use of evidence for policy and practice and the role of
systematic reviews in improving education and other facets of the
human sciences. His expertise is in educational technology and
quantitative methods. He is the lead researcher on the ePEARL
project.
Anne Wade is Manager and Information Specialist at the Centre
for the Study of Learning and Performance of the Concordia
University. She is also the Project Coordinator of Electronic
Portfolio Encouraging Active Reflective Learning (ePEARL), a
collaborative project between the CSLP, LEARN and a variety of
school boards across Canada. ePEARL software is designed for use
in French and English classrooms within Canadian elementary and
secondary schools. The aim of this project is to combine research
evidence on portfolio use with practical feedback from the field, in
an attempt to develop easy to use, powerful software designed to
support key processes related to self regulated learning.

The digiFolio Training Course took place in Albufeira, Algarve, Portugal in April 2007

The main objective of the digiFolio Project is to use the educational possibilities
of portfolios supported by ICT in teacher's professional development leading to
the building up of new competences and new approaches in the learning
methodologies.
Accordingly, a shift in the role of the teacher will arise since the focus will be on
student centred rather than teacher centred learning environments with the
subsequent increase of students' responsabilities and motivation in their own
educational path.

Dear colleagues,
The Socrates Comenius 2.1 Project Digital Portfolio as a strategy for teachers professional
development will organise a two days seminar focussed on the use of digital portfolios for educational
purposes.
In two keynotes presented by the well known experts, Marje Kankaanranta, from Finland, Anne Wade and
Philip C. Abrami, from Canada and in several communications, teachers from different European countries will
be sharing their experience and disseminate good practices on the subject of digital portfolios usage fostering
the discussion around the advantages of this tool in education.

General Information
This seminar will be held in Helsinki, Finland, from May, 22 to 24, 2008.
Participants will be accommodated on board of one of the Silja Line ships departing from the harbour of Helsinki.
The planned conferences and paper presentations will take place during the voyage to Stockholm allowing
seminar participants to enjoy a visit to the old town and, at the same time, to experience onboard activities.

About the Keynote Speakers

Philip C. Abrami is Professor, Director, and Research Chair at the Centre for the Study of Learning and
Performance, Concordia University. He is also a founding member of CanKnow: The Canadian Network for
Knowledge Utilization and both the Co-Chair of the Education Coordinating Group and Steering Committee
member of the International Campbell Collaboration. Phil is interested in the use of evidence for policy and
practice and the role of systematic reviews in improving education and other facets of the human sciences. He
welcomes visitors to the CSLP website to learn more about his work in the area of e-portfolios. See:

Anne Wade is the person responsible person of the Electronic Portfolio Encouraging Active Reflective Learning
(ePEARL), a project of the Center for the Study of Learning and Performance of the Concordia University. The
CSLP-LEARN's ePEARL software is designed for use in French and English classrooms within Canadian
elementary and secondary schools. The aim with this project is to combine research evidence on portfolio use
with practical feedback from the field, in an attempt to develop easy to use, powerful software designed to
support key processes related to self regulated learning.

Dr Marja Kankaanranta is a senior researcher at the Institute for Educational Research, University of
Jyvskyl, Finland. Kankaanranta leads multidisciplinary laboratory for game design and research (Agora
Game Lab) at Agora Center, JyU. She also acts as an adjunct professor in educational sciences at the University
of Oulu and in computer sciences at the University of Jyvskyl. Currently, Marjas main research areas are
authentic assessment (e.g. digital portfolios), innovative uses of information and communication technology
(ICT) in education, international comparison of ICT use in education and game-based learning. Kankaanranta
has published several articles and books focusing on portfolio assessment. The recent edited book e-Portfolio
Adding value to lifelong learning presents electronic portfolio projects in six countries.

Registration procedures
Registration is made by submitting the Conference Registration Form electronically (on-line) on the
conference website, or by fax, e-mail or regular post. The addresses are found on the registration form.
Registration is confirmed at full payment, and payment will be acknowledged. Due to the size of the
conference venue, for this conference there will be a limitation in the number of participants,
wherefore we recommend early registration and payment in connection with the registration to

Finland is especially known for its peacefulness and beautiful nature: immense forests, a unique archipelago
and thousands of lakes. But Finland is also a modern Nordic country with a high standard of living and a
highly developed economy and technology. It is sometimes referred to as the 'land of the thousand lakes', but
in fact they are about 187,888!
A veritable labyrinth of interior waterways, with a large amount of bays and islands, extends across the
country but is especially dense across the eastern areas. The lakes are linked by rivers, straits and canals and
offer opportunities for a variety of recreation.
This extraordinary country will welcome the delegates of the Seminar Digital Portfolio a voyage of
knowledge, from 22 to 24 May 2008.

For those who wish to have a better knowledge of Finland, its people and nature it is possible to choose from a
wide range of opportunities going from guided tours in Helsinki, to the traditional Finnish sauna or countryside
excursions which may be organized on May 24 and 25.

5. Suomenlinna Sea Fortress

Suomenlinna

A memorable excursion to a 250-year-old fortress, preserved intact because of its military use. Today
Suomenlinna is included in UNESCO's list of World Heritage sites and is one of the most popular sights in
Finland. The fortress is also a part of Helsinki City and has around 900 inhabitants.

Theres a city ferry from market square and a tourist boat in summer. The ride takes about 15 minutes and
costs 5-6 euros/return ticket.

A variety of guided walking tours is available with different themes. There are ready-made and tailor-made
packages for groups.

7. Finnish Smoke Sauna and Countryside Dishes

The experience of sauna culture and the peace of the countryside in the heart of
Helsinki!
Saunasaari is an island close to the Helsinki city centre. It takes only about 15
minutes to get there from the Helsinki market place by boat. Its a perfect place
to refresh your mind!

There are four different smoke saunas available. There are also water-heated
pools giving an extremely relaxing experience.

The main activities of the digiFolio Project include:
Building a common knowledge base supported by research work on the
theory of portfolio usage;
Paper and online publication of the results of the research work;
Establishment of the pedagogical model for the training course;
Analysis of the existing technological infrastructures for digital portfolio
usage;
Adjustment of the best tools and training course setup;
Piloting and evidencing of the training course;
Monitoring of the trainees' work by using a specific online teachers' support
structure;
International seminar.

The main objective of the digiFolio Project is to use the educational possibilities of
portfolios supported by ICT in teacher's professional development leading to the building up
of new competences and new approaches in the learning methodologies.
Accordingly, a shift in the role of the teacher will arise since the focus will be on student
centred rather than teacher centred learning environments with the subsequent increase of
students' responsabilities and motivation in their own educational path.

Ptavoitteena digitaalinen portfolioprojektilla on tuoda esiin portfolion
opetuksellisia mahdollisuuksia informaatio teknologiaa hydyntmll.
Tavoitteena on tukea opettajien ammatillista kehittymist tuomalla esiin uusia
osaamisalueita ja uusia lhestymistapoja oppimismetodeihin.
Opettajan rooli tulee muuttumaan, sill fokus on opiskelijakeskeinen
opettajakeskeisen oppimisympristn sijaan, mik lis opiskelijan vastuuta ja
motivaatiota omalla opiskelupolullaan.

Programa do Seminrio Internacional do Projecto digifolio (PDF, 274K)
Curso de Formao do Projecto digiFolio, Algarve, Portugal, Abril de 2007

O objectivo principal do Projecto digiFolio a utilizao das potencialidades
educacionais dos portfolios com a apoio das Tecnologias de Informao e
Comunicao no desenvolvimento profissional dos professores. Pretende-se
incrementar novas competncias e novas abordagens nas metodologias de
aprendizagem.
Desta forma, espera-se vir a provocar uma mudana qualitativa no papel do
professor uma vez que a nfase ser colocada em ambientes de aprendizagem
centrados no aluno e no no professor. Consequentemente, conseguir-se-a obter
um aumento de responsabilizao dos alunos pelos seus processos de
aprendizagem, bem como um aumento do grau de motivao individual.

De digiFolio Trainingscursus, Algarve, Portugal, april 2007

De belangrijkste doelstelling van het digiFolio-project is portfolio's met ICT-
ondersteuning te gebruiken in het kader van de professionele ontwikkeling van
de (toekomstige) leraar. Portfolio's kunnen helpen bij het opbouwen van nieuwe
competenties en nieuwe benaderingen van leermethodologie.
Deze ontwikkeling gaat hand in hand met de verschuiving van de rol van de
leraar: van een leeromgeving waarin de leraar centraal staat ("teacher-
centered") naar een omgeving waar de student centraal staat ("student-
centered"), waarin de student steeds meer eigen verantwoordelijkheid en
motivatie heeft voor het eigen 'professionele groeipad'.

Main Activities
The main activities of the digiFolio Project include:
Building a common knowledge base supported by research work on the theory of portfolio usage;
Paper and online publication of the results of the research work;
Establishment of the pedagogical model for the training course;
Analysis of the existing technological infrastructures for digital portfolio usage;
Adjustment of the best tools and training course setup;
Piloting and evidencing of the training course;
Monitoring of the trainees' work by using a specific online teachers' support structure;
International seminar.

A criao de um modelo pedaggico para o curso de formao;
Anlise das infraestruturas tecnolgicas para a utilizao de portfolios
digitais;
Escolha das melhores ferramentas para a implementao do curso;

Monitorizao dos formandos distncia com o apoio de uma estrutura on
line de trabalho colaborativo;

O Projecto


O objectivo principal do Projecto digiFolio a utilizao das potencialidades educacionais
dos portfolios com a apoio das Tecnologias de Informao e Comunicao no
desenvolvimento profissional dos professores. Pretende-se incrementar novas competncias
e novas abordagens nas metodologias de aprendizagem.
Desta forma, espera-se vir a provocar uma mudana qualitativa no papel do professor uma
vez que a nfase ser colocada em ambientes de aprendizagem centrados no aluno e no
no professor. Consequentemente, conseguir-se-a obter um aumento de responsabilizao
dos alunos pelos seus processos de aprendizagem, bem como um aumento do grau de
motivao individual.

De belangrijkste doelstelling van het digiFolio-project is portfolio's met ICT-ondersteuning
te gebruiken in het kader van de professionele ontwikkeling van de (toekomstige) leraar.
Portfolio's kunnen helpen bij het opbouwen van nieuwe competenties en nieuwe
benaderingen van leermethodologie.
Deze ontwikkeling gaat hand in hand met de verschuiving van de rol van de leraar: van
een leeromgeving waarin de leraar centraal staat ("teacher-centered") naar een omgeving
waar de student centraal staat ("student-centered"), waarin de student steeds meer eigen
verantwoordelijkheid en motivatie heeft voor het eigen 'professionele groeipad'.

The main objective of the digiFolio Project is to use the educational possibilities of
portfolios supported by ICT in teacher's professional development leading to the building up
of new competences and new approaches in the learning methodologies.
Accordingly, a shift in the role of the teacher will arise since the focus will be on student
centred rather than teacher centred learning environments with the subsequent increase of
students' responsabilities and motivation in their own educational path.

Ptavoitteena digitaalinen portfolioprojektilla on tuoda esiin portfolion
opetuksellisia mahdollisuuksia informaatio teknologiaa hydyntmll.
Tavoitteena on tukea opettajien ammatillista kehittymist tuomalla esiin uusia
osaamisalueita ja uusia lhestymistapoja oppimismetodeihin.
Opettajan rooli tulee muuttumaan, sill fokus on opiskelijakeskeinen
opettajakeskeisen oppimisympristn sijaan, mik lis opiskelijan vastuuta ja

O Projecto


O objectivo principal do Projecto digiFolio a utilizao das potencialidades
educacionais dos portfolios com a apoio das Tecnologias de Informao e
Comunicao no desenvolvimento profissional dos professores. Pretende-se
incrementar novas competncias e novas abordagens nas metodologias de
aprendizagem.
Desta forma, espera-se vir a provocar uma mudana qualitativa no papel do
professor uma vez que a nfase ser colocada em ambientes de aprendizagem
centrados no aluno e no no professor. Consequentemente, conseguir-se-a obter
um aumento de responsabilizao dos alunos pelos seus processos de
aprendizagem, bem como um aumento do grau de motivao individual.

De belangrijkste doelstelling van het digiFolio-project is portfolio's met ICT-
ondersteuning te gebruiken in het kader van de professionele ontwikkeling van
de (toekomstige) leraar. Portfolio's kunnen helpen bij het opbouwen van nieuwe
competenties en nieuwe benaderingen van leermethodologie.
Deze ontwikkeling gaat hand in hand met de verschuiving van de rol van de
leraar: van een leeromgeving waarin de leraar centraal staat ("teacher-
centered") naar een omgeving waar de student centraal staat ("student-
centered"), waarin de student steeds meer eigen verantwoordelijkheid en
motivatie heeft voor het eigen 'professionele groeipad'.

De belangrijkste doelstelling van het digiFolio-project is portfolio's met ICT-ondersteuning
te gebruiken in het kader van de professionele ontwikkeling van de (toekomstige) leraar.
Portfolio's kunnen helpen bij het opbouwen van nieuwe competenties en nieuwe
benaderingen van leermethodologie.
Deze ontwikkeling gaat hand in hand met de verschuiving van de rol van de leraar: van
een leeromgeving waarin de leraar centraal staat ("teacher-centered") naar een omgeving
waar de student centraal staat ("student-centered"), waarin de student steeds meer eigen
verantwoordelijkheid en motivatie heeft voor het eigen 'professionele groeipad'.
