()ecifically, this study endea1ored to construct a cogniti1e model of 2no/ledge transformation .y identifying /hat cogniti1e com)onents constitute the 2no/ledge transformation )rocess and ho/ they are structured as a model. (ince there has .een no systematic scrutiny of the cogniti1e )rocesses of 2no/ledge transformation in authoring hy)erte3t, an inducti1e data analysis, a 6ualitati1e research method, is em)loyed to theori:e a cogniti1e model of ho/ and;or /hat cogniti1e )rocesses are occurring. 5his study set three stages to ela.orate data collection methods and delineate the cogniti1e )rocess of 2no/ledge transformation in authoring hy)erte3t7 18 -odel <nitiation (tage, "8 -odel &la.oration (tage, and #8 -odel 5heori:ation (tage. 5hese three stages com)ose the iterati1e model saturation )rocess of this study, /hich /as .ased on not only iterati1e data analysis and com)arati1e analysis .ut also an e1olutionary design a))roach. 9or the -odel <nitiation (tage, one =orean graduate student, /ho /as majoring in instructional systems and enrolling in a southeast )u.lic uni1ersity, )artici)ated to the initial stage. 5he )ur)ose of the -odel <nitiation (tage /as to .uild a )reliminary model of 2no/ledge transformation in authoring hy)erte3t. 5he results of -odel <nitiation (tage re1ealed that there /ere t/o factors as causal conditions that determine the )artici)ant>s cogniti1e )rocess. *s a second cogniti1e com)onent, it /as o.ser1ed that the )artici)ant /as )rioriti:ing 2ey conce)ts to transform his )rior 2no/ledge. 9or a third cogniti1e com)onent, it /as identified that the functions of authoring tool regulated the )artici)ant>s cogniti1e )rocess. 5he -odel &la.oration (tage /as directed .y the findings from the -odel <nitial -odel. 5hree =orean graduate students, /ho /ere majoring in instructional systems and enrolling in a southeast )u.lic uni1ersity, )artici)ated in the -odel &la.oration (tage. 9i1e cogniti1e com)onents /ere identified7 18 content 2no/ledge, "8 causal condition, #8 internal modification of 2no/ledge structure, 48 e3ternal re)resentation .y tool regulations, and $8 instructional 2no/ledge. 9inally, for the -odel 5heori:ation (tage si3 =orean graduate students )artici)ated. 5he outcome of the -odel 5heori:ation (tage identified si3 cogniti1e com)onents and their relationshi)s during 2no/ledge transformation through an authoring tool7 authoring goal, "8 content 2no/ledge, #8 instructional 2no/ledge, 48 )reliminary modification of 2no/ledge structure, $8 e3ternal re)resentation .y tool regulation, and 48 internal modification of the 2no/ledge structure. *uthoring goal /as identified as to acti1ate content 2no/ledge and instructional 2no/ledge. ?hen )artici)ants /ere gi1en the authoring goal, it acti1ated /hat domain 2no/ledge should .e used for the content 2no/ledge and ho/ the 2no/ledge should .e organi:ed for the instructional 2no/ledge. ,ontent 2no/ledge )layed a role as a main resource to .e transformed. <nstructional 2no/ledge /as identified to an effect at an earlier stage of the 2no/ledge transformation )rocess. +oth of content 2no/ledge and instructional 2no/ledge /ere coordinating for the )reliminary modification of 2no/ledge structure. *fter the authoring goal acti1ated their content 2no/ledge and instructional 2no/ledge, )artici)ants /ere o.ser1ed to .egin to modify their 2no/ledge structure for transformation. @et, there /as no mediation .y the functions of an authoring tool, the modification of 2no/ledge structure needed to remain a )reliminary form of 2no/ledge transformation. 5he main features of this )reliminary modification of the )artici)ants> 2no/ledge structure occurred as the follo/ing se6uence7 18 com)rehension of the conce)ts, "8 adjustment of the )artici)ants> )rior 2no/ledge of the conce)ts, and #8 configuration of the interrelationshi)s of the conce)ts. &3ternal re)resentation .y tool regulation /as identified to mediate the )rocess of 2no/ledge transformation. <n order to e3ternali:e the modified mental re)resentation, )artici)ants had to follo/ the authoring tool>s functions. ,onse6uently, the changed mental re)resentation needed to .e altered .y the /ays an authoring tool allo/ed the )resenting of 2no/ledge. 5hen, finally, )artici)ants could com)lete internal modification of their 2no/ledge structure /ith /or2ing together /ith the e3ternal re)resentation .y tool regulation. 5he results of this study )ro)osed that there /ere t/o different ty)es of 2no/ledge searching )rocess during the 2no/ledge transformation through an authoring tool7 18 conce)t le1el 2no/ledge searching )rocess and "8 structure le1el 2no/ledge searching )rocess. ?hereas the conce)t le1el searching )rocess is em)loyed for a conce)tual understanding, the structure le1el searching )rocess is used to understand the interconnectedness of conce)ts. 5he conce)t le1el searching )rocess is acti1ated at the moment a conce)t is understood, and the )rocess is s)read out through 1ery limited num.ers nodes of semantic net/or2s. 5hus, the 2no/ledge searching )rocess is limited node-.y-node. An the other hand, the structure le1el 2no/ledge searching )rocess is acti1ated to scan interrelationshi)s among conce)ts, and the )rocess is s)read out across the chun2s of semantic net/or2s that consist of a set of nodes.
