MADRID
SPAIN
"Come to Mieres and Help Us!" (Read Acts l6;9-10) After
months of praying for direction and while on a survey trip,
this is the call that we heard. In the Region of Asturias,
a small group of believers that did not have a church in
their area were praying that the Lord would send someone to
help them. We heard the call and on May 31 moved from
Madrid to Mieres, Charles and Cheryl Levi also ansWered the
call and have now moved to Mieres.
'/ I
SERVICES IN
OUR APARTMENT
Mieres is quite a change from Madrid. Madrid, the mod
ern capital of Spain, has a population of J- million.
Mieres, located in the heart of the coal mining area of
Asturias, has a population of 65,000 which apparently in
cludes small surrounging villages. Nevertheless, Mieres
is the largest city in Spain that does not have an Evaji-
gelical Church,
We are working with a small group of believers who have
been Christians for a number of years. They attended a
church in the city of Oviedo but were unable to be active
due to the problem of transportation. It is I5 miles from
their homes to the church and none of them have a car. Our
purpose in working with them is to establish a church, not
only to minister to their spiritual needs but also to e-
vangelize the area.
The first service was held on June 17th with eighteen
adults and six children present. Since then we have con
tinued to meet weekly in our apartment. By law we cannot
meet in our apartment if there are more than 20 adults
present. As you can see, this puts a real limit upon the
work until we have a building. We are in the process of
looking for a local (storefront) to rent but have not yet
found one that is within our price range. The entire group
has pledged $120 toward the monthly rent. Pray with us for
this need. We hope that one day we will be able to buy a
local. A downpayraent of ten or fifteen thousand dollars
wo&ld probably be required.
Praise the Lord with us for His direction in our moving
to Mieres, Pray with us for this group of believers that
they will grow in love and faith so that they can have a
fruitful ministry in the area of Mieres.
Praise the LordJ He has made it possible for Dan to
re-apply for his residence permit. This is the third time
that he has applied. According to the head of the H-vangel-
ical Legal Assistance Office, the government is more apt
to grant the permits to foreigners living in areas other
than Madrid and the southern coastal areas. Pray with us
that the authorities will grant the permit this time. Hav
ing the permit would remove some restrictions that are now
placed upon our ministry,

KATHY TEACHING
THE CHILDREN
Several weeks ago Kathy started taking the children of
the believers apart in order to teach them. This not only
makes it easier for the adults to put themselves into the
services, but also gives the children a chance to hear a
Bible story. The children have especially been thrilled
to color pictures relating to the stories, Ruth, an ac
tive seven year old has been showing her pictures to her
neighbors. This may be one avenue to interest children in
coming to the services and for eventually being able to
witness in a direct way to the parents.
Kathy is still often frustrated in the language but
Praise the Lord that she is able to teach the children.
This is em excellent opportunity for her to improve h^
abilities in Spanish besides giving her a more direct form
of ministry. She hopes to be able to obtain a tutor in the
fall. Pray for her as she continues learning the language,
as she ministers thru teaching the children and as she car
ries out her regular duties as mother and missionary wife.
PRAYER GLO,l^pr
As I sat down to write this section of the newsletter I
put on a tape recording of religious music. One of the
first songs was a song of praise that quotes from Psalm 96
and 97, Several phrases jumped out at me, "Let the heav
ens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar
and the fullness thereof. Let the field be joyful and all
that is therein; then shall the trees of the forest rejoice
.,,let the hills be joyful together," These phrases express
beautifully the thoughts that I have when I drive through
the region of Asturias where we now live, Everytime I look
at the vibrant green mountains with their solid rock peaks,
the forests, the lush fields and see the waves crashing
against the rocks along the coast my heart is filled with
joy and praise for the Creator, I cannot understand how
people can deny the existence of God, but I know they do;
neither can I understand how people cam reject the Saviour
but they do.
Praise the Lord for His fantastic creation that sings
His qxraise. Praise Him for our salvation. Praise Him for
allowing us to hear the call to come to Mieres,
Pray that He will continue His work in our lives and in
the lives of the believers. Pray for the evamgelization of
Mieres, Pray that He will supply all of our needs.

HOME FOB CHRISTMAS
THAT'S RICiHT - He'll be bae (in the U.S.) for Christ-
mas* For various reasons we moved up our departure date
from February to December 17th, The main reason being
that we are going to need more time in the States before
beginning our hectic speaking schedule. There is a real
need to have more time to meet with our Elders in order
that future plans can be made and approved so that we can
present these to our supporters along with our report of
what has been done. This extra time will also give us a
chance to make more adequate preparation of our presenta
tions as well as allowing us to spend more time with our
families and be with them for the holidays (we appreciate
that as it has been nearly 3 years since we li8t saw themi
and since then we have added Alisa to our family and we
now have two new brothers-in-law and one new sister-in-law
that we have never seen before). Another large benefit of
this change is that we are thus able to take advantage of
a charter flight which saves us slightly over half of the
fare of the Madrid to New York flight.
Of course our major concern was how this change would
affect the work in Hieres, (it is interesting to note that
our going home before Christmas was suggested by the be
lievers themselves.) We gave this much thought and prayer
and have determined that this change in schedule of ap
proximately six weeks will not significantly affect the
work. We had hoped and prayed that the Lord would send
someone to work with us before our ftictlough so that the
services could continue but that has not come about. Dur
ing our absence it will not be possible for the believers
to hold services as they live in housing provided by-ttie
coal mining company and they are forbidden to hold any
type of meetings in their apartments. They will occasion
ally attend services at the church in Oviedo but When they
do, they will have to leave home at 2i00 p.m. in order to
arrive for the 6tOO p.m. service and then they will not
arrive home until lltOO p.m. ITay for them and their
spiritual development during this time. We plan to send
cassett tapes from time to time so that they will be able
to at least listen to a sermon once in a idiile. We hate
to leave the work at this time, but we can also see that it
is more advantageous to leave the work now while it is in
the beginning stages rather than later idien our departure
would be more of a blow to an already established work.
AROUMD 1HE HOME
All of usy of course, are excited and anxious about get
ting to spend Christmas with our families, Ve are busy get
ting all of the details taken care of before our departure.
Nathan did not understand why we couldn't leave the very
same day we told him about the trip. According to him, the
plane is "loading up" with people and we need to hurry be
fore it leaves.
The biggest detail to be taken care of is our move to
the apartment above us. Mhile we are gone, our landlord
plans to put a medical office in the apartment we are cur
rently living in. The apartment above us in now being
papered and painted etc, due to the mess it was left in.
So,we are awaiting word that we can begin cleaning and
moving in before our departure date in Just 6 days.
It has truely been a blessing and a strength to see how
all of the details are being taken care of by our heavenly
Father, He has directed us towards different paths than
we had chosen thus saving us time and monby in postage,
clothing, air fares, storage for the car and our new apart
ment should be warmer, He Praise the Lord Lnd rejoice
over and over that He is our God, Father, Shepherd and
King;
FURLOUGH INFORMATION
We are tentatively planning to return to Spain in July
depending on the possibilities of obtaining the Charter
flight during that month. Therefore the change in our de-
parture date should not cause us to make any changes in the
itenary that we have already established with the majorfty
of our supporters.
During our furlough we will be living in a mobile home fur
nished to us free by the Shephwds' Bethel mission. We do
Praise the Lord for supplying this need.
We may be contacted by writing to us in care of the
