Standard Special Provision for Micropiles, Version 8

January, 2012 in progress

Note: This micropile specification was developed specifically for designs where the
structure footing dimensions are predetermined by the designer and shown on the plans
along with the number, layout and factored loads of the micropiles. The micropile
contractor is required to design, install and test the individual micropiles to provide the
required resistances and design the pile top attachments to the footing. The contractor is
also required to provide the specified corrosion protection system.
f the design calls for the entire micropile !system" to be designed by the contractor, #i.e.
footing design, number of piles, layout, factored resistances, connections, etc.$ then this
specification will require modification. %lso, designs that specify the detailed design of
individual micropiles in the contract documents #i.e. micropile type, length, casing si&e,
hole diameter, bond length, etc.$ are not recommended. t is recommended that the
micropile contractor be responsible for designing the individual micropiles with review
and approval by the 'ngineer of (ecord for the structure.
This specification is based on micropiles designed using )oad and (esistance *actor
+esign methods #)(*+$ methods. (efer to ,ection 10 of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge
Design Specifications for micropile design guidance including appropriate resistance
factors to use. The *-.% report titled/ !Micropile Design and Construction, Report No
FH!A NH"#$%#$&', may also be used as a reference for micropile design procedures.
This specification has the following protocol/
Commentary is provided herein on some sections where modifications to the
specification may be necessary depending on specific site conditions, design
requirements or other factors.
Required Input is required in some specification sections as noted. This is where the
designer or specification writer is required to input quantities, ma0e certain selections or
provide other input as described.
