Pillowcase Project Coming to BPL

Darke County Red Cross will be at Bradford Public Library with
their Pillowcase Project for all elementary school-aged children on
Monday, Aug. 4, 1-2 p.m., in the librarys Community Room.
The Pillowcase Project began in New Orleans during Hurricane
Katrina as a preparedness program for any emergency. In early 2013,
the Walt Disney Company funded the design and development phase
of a multi-year effort to build on this success by creating a standardized, state-of-the-art preparedness education program. As a result, the
Pillowcase Project is now used by Red Cross chapters across the
United States. The objective of this program is to create a generation
of children who understand the science of hazards and who are
empowered to take action by practicing how to prepare for emergencies and share what they have learned with family and friends.
Bradford Public Library is pleased to have the Darke County
American Red Cross Chapter present the Pillowcase Project to our
own area youth. Program materials will be supplied by the Red Cross
and BPL.
Contact the library to sign up your child for this very special safety program in advance. Call 937-448-2612.

Honey Harvest at BNC Sunday!

Come enjoy the sweet taste of summer at Brukner Nature Centers
annual Honey Harvest presented by the Miami Valleys Beekeepers
Association on Sunday, Aug. 3, from 2-4 p.m.
Did you know that colonists brought honey bees to America more
than 300 years ago? Before that, there was no native honey except
from bumblebees. Did you know that there are 30,000 to 60,000 bees
in a hive one queen, hundreds of drones, and the rest, workers?!
Bees fly between 10-15mph and must make 40,000-80,000 trips to
make a single pound of honey!
You can escape the heat in Brukner Nature Centers beautiful airconditioned Heidelberg Auditorium and learn all about the process of
beekeeping, from setting up the hive to processing the honey for your
table.
Enjoy a taste of this seasons hard work, courtesy of the honey
bees at Brukner Nature Center, located at 5995 Horseshoe Bend Rd.,
Troy. Phone 937-698-6493.

September 30 at any CBC Donor Center and most CBC mobile blood drives. Donors are encouraged to
schedule an appointment at www.DonorTime.com or contact CBC Darke County Account Representative
Dana Puterbaugh at (937) 997-2199 or dputerbaugh@givingblood.org.
CBC is also marking its milestone year with a public awareness campaign, celebrations that included the assembly of staff members to form a human blood drop, and the special Summer Cruze-In 2014
Blood Drive. The color of the grand prize Chevrolet Cruze is champagne silver as a toast to CBCs 50th
Anniversary celebration. Everyone age 18 and older who registers to donate at any CBC Donor Center or
CBC mobile blood drive through September 30 will be automatically entered in the drawing to win the
2014 Chevy Cruze.
CBC has extended its traditional summer blood drive campaign to four months (May 30-September 30)
and is also allowing eligible donors to enter the drawing a second time when they register for a second
donation during the blood drive period. Official rules are available at www.givingblood.org.
Upcoming Darke County drives, open to the public, include:
Monday, August 4, 3-7 p.m.: Greenville Grace Church, 4805 State Route 49, Greenville
Monday, August 11, 2:30-6:30 p.m.: Bradford High School, 750 Railroad Ave., Bradford
Tuesday, August 12, 12:30-6:30 p.m.: Greenville Church of the Brethren, 421 Central Ave., Greenville
Saturday, August 30, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.: Dave Knapp Ford Lincoln, 500 Wagner Ave, Greenville

Bradford Student Wins Lead the Way Scholarship

Community Blood Center and Vectren have awarded Lead the Way
Creative Scholarships to five Miami Valley high school seniors for skillfully
using video, poetry, art, and ingenuity to create winning blood drive recruitment campaigns. Applicants were asked to create a theme for their high school
blood drive and explain why it would effectively encourage fellow students to
donate. They were also challenged to express the theme in a clever, creative
fashion using conventional marketing techniques or innovative, artistic
expressions. Each was awarded $1,000 for college tuition.
Among the winners was Kristina Parke from Bradford High School. Her
campaign featured a creative and unusual donor gift, a bracelet woven from 70
ft. of red and white parachute cord. Its an idea she says would appeal to her
Kristina Parke
classmates more than a T-shirt because its both symbolic and trendy.
The Paracord Bracelet is used in the armed forces for an extra parachute
string, said Kristina, who resides in Covington. Her slogan is, 70 Feet of Paracord Can Save ONE
Life. A Few Minutes Can Save Up to THREE! So Have STRENGTH and Come Donate. Kristina
plans to study pediatric nursing at Kent State University.

Christmas in July
For the last couple of years, Ginger has given our children and adult grandchildren gift certificates for most of the family to dine out together some time in
July of the following year.
In 2013 we went to the Versailles Winery and grilled our own steaks
and sampled some of their choice wines. We had such a wonderful time. This
year, Ginger decided to give the same gift for 2014. The winery had a scheduling
conflict, so they told Ginger we couldnt have the designated date. She told all
the parties concerned that she had made arrangements for this date, with 17
people, and if the date wasnt available she would have to have a full refund.
Saturday night, fourteen available adults met at Troys La Piazza and had a
wonderful time enjoying family. We also celebrated a belated birthday for grandchild number six, Morgan Sargent.
There have been many quotes, documents, and stories written about Family. I
would like to share some of them with you.
You don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you, as you are to them.
In every conceivable manner, the family is a link to our past, a bridge to our
future.
If you cannot get rid of the family skeleton, you may as well make it dance.
Family faces are magic mirrors. Looking at people who belong to us, we see the
past, present, and future.
We didnt have everyone present, and thats ok. What we did have was a wonderful time together. There were fourteen beautiful people smiling, laughing,
story telling, and enjoying each other.
The person with the biggest smile was Ginger. Theres no one on earth that
loves her family any more than she does. There may be equals, but none with
more love and kindness.
Before we all met, Ginger was a little melancholy. We talked about it, and
agreed that we can only set the date and invite them. Those that can come will,
and those that cant wont.
This weeks bottom line: Genesis 2:24 . . . and they with their children become
family, the essential building block of human society.
Moral to this story: Always give love and aection to family. Always respect
others feelings. Always have fun, no matter what!

Railroad Museum Field Trip

Planned for Young Patrons at BPL
All preschool through 2nd graders who participated in the Fizz, BoomRead! Reading
Program at Bradford Public Library will hold their annual Field Trip on Tuesday, July 29. All children are encouraged to bring along parents, grandparents, child-care providers, or junior high or

Children will be treated to railroad storytelling by Grandma Sue and they will also visit the
newly opened Childrens Interactive Museum in the museum basement.
Participants should arrive prior to 1 p.m. at the library. The field trip group will then walk down
the block to the Bradford Ohio Railroad Museum. This program will last approximately one hour.
Refreshments will be served at the museum and then the children and adults will be ready for the
librarys NASA Moon Rocks & Meteorites program at 2 p.m. held at the library.
This will be a terrific way to spend a lazy summer day!
