(This Foreword is not part of ASME B36.10M-1996.)

In March1927,theAmerican
Standards Association authorized the organization of a
Sectional Committee on Standardization of DimensionsandMaterial of Wrought Steel and
Wrought Iron Pipe and Tubing for the purpose of unifying the standards of these commodities
in force in this country. The American Society for Testing and Materials and The American
Society of Mechanical Engineers weredesignatedas sponsors, andthefirstmeetingofthe
Sectional Committee washeld in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, onMay 18, 1928.
The dimensions of commercial pipe in generaluse in theUnited
States atthetime
conformed rather generally tothoserecommended
by theASME Committee on Standard
PipeandPipe Threads published in 1886 (ASME Transactions, Vol. VIII, p. 29). On these
standards an enormous industryhasbeenbuiltandthesatisfactoryuse
of this product
provesthe soundness of the original designand specification.
Increasingly severe service demands atthetime
of the Committees organization had
beenmet by using the nearest available pipe or tubing for heavier sections such as casing,
mechanical tubing, etc., withresultinguneconomicalmultiplicity
ofwall thicknesses.
Subsequently, the Committee, with the cooperation of theindustry, made
a survey of
existing practice as the logical starting point for the development ofan American Standard.
From this survey, a tablewas designed to provide a selection of wall thicknesses of pipe
to cover the power piping requirements of industry where strength to resist internal pressure
governs selection andwaslater
expanded toincludepipe
diameters and thicknesses used
in other industries.
The original intent of the Committee wasto establish a system of Schedule Numbers
for pipe size/wall thickness combinations whichwouldhavean
approximately uniform
relationship equal to 1000 timesthe
P/S expression contained in themodifiedBarlow
formula for pipewall thickness as defined in theAppendixtothis
standard. The resulting
Numbers departed so far from existing wall thicknesses in commonusethat
the original
intent couldnot be accomplished. The Schedule Numberswerethen
adopted strictly as a
convenient designation system for use in ordering.
In all cases, the designer mustbasehis selection ontherulesand
allowable stresses set
by the code which governs his particular construction. The tableis dimensionally complete
for all sizes andwall thicknesses within its scope, butsome of the larger, heavier wall
sections are beyond the capability of seamless mill productionandmustbe
obtained from
forged andboredbillets
or other sources.
The first issue of this standard was approved by letter ballot of the Sectional Committee
in October 1934, by The AmericanSociety of Mechanical Engineers in November 1934,
and by theAmerican Society for Testing and Materials in February1935.Formal approval
was given with the designation American Standard tentative by the American Standards
Association in November1935. Subsequent slight revisionsto Table I andthe footnotes
of the dimensional tables were approved and the ASA changed the designation to American
Standard; the date of ASA approval wasApril28,1939.

Furtherrevisionswere
madeby theSectional Committee. The listofspecifications
in
Table 1 wasrevisedwherenecessaryandslightrevisions
in wallthicknesses of some of
the large sizes of theheavy schedules weremadewhere P/S valueswereout of line.
It wasthehope in 1939that the designation of pipeusedcommercially by allindustry
as Standard weight, Extra-Strong, and Double Extra-Strong would gradually be replaced by
Schedule Number designation. However,owingto
customs of over 50 years standing,
demand and production of pipe to these traditional dimensions is undiminished. Consequently,
in response to a demandfromusers,accepted
practice for dimensions and weights of
commercial wrought steel and welded wrought iron pipe were
added. These changes in the
standard were approved and it was designated an American Standard on February 23, 1950.
Subcommittee No. 1 wasreorganized in 1957. In addition to necessaryeditorial changes,
a simplified format was selected for the tables of weights and dimensions so as to include
andidentifythesizesandweights
ofAPI
Standards 5L and 5LX. The decimal wall
thicknessesandplainendweightswere
established by a uniformprocedurerecognized by
the tubular industry, and for some sizes the decimal wall thicknesses and plain end weights
shown mayhavevariedslightlyfromthoseshown
in the tables ofpreviousissuesofthis
standard. These changes to the standard were approved and it was designated
anAmerican
Standard on December 21, 1959.
The standard was revised in 1969. A uniformmethodto calculate theplainendweight
of steelpipe was included, and minor adjustments weremade in thetabulatedweightsof
steelpipe in Table 2 toconformtothis
new method.Additional sizes andthicknesses of
steelpipethathadcome
into commonusewere also added to Table 2. Inasmuch as API
Standard 5L nolongerincludedwroughtiron
pipe, reference to this API Standard was
deletedfrom Table 3. Thesechanges to thestandardwereapprovedand
it was designated
an AmericanNationalStandard on February 3, 1970.
Further revisionsweremade
tothestandard
in 1975.Additional sizes and thicknesses
of steelpipethat hadbeen addedtoAPIspecificationswereaddedto
Table 2. Table 3,
DimensionsandWeights of WeldedWroughtIronPipe,was
deleted in its entirety, since
wroughtironpipe
isno longerproduced. These changes in the standard wereapproved
and it was designatedanAmericanNationalStandardon
June 5, 1975.
The standard was revised in 1978to include SI metric dimensions. The outside diameter
andwall thicknesses wereconverted to millimeters by multiplyingtheinchdimensions
by
25.4. Outside diameters larger than 16 in. wereroundedtothenearestmillimeter,
and
outside diameters 16 in. and smaller wereroundedtothenearest0.1mm.Wall
thicknesses
wereroundedtothenearest
0.01 mm. These converted androunded SI metric dimensions
wereadded to Table 2. A formulato calculate the SI metricplainendmass,
in kilograms
per meter, using SI metric diameters and thicknesses was added to section 5. The SI metric
plainendmasswas
calculated for eachsizeandthickness,andwasaddedto
Table 2.
These changes in thestandardwereapprovedanditwas
designated anAmericanNational
StandardonJuly18,1979.
Further revisions weremade in 1984. The ANSI designations, which are no longer in
use,weredeletedfrom
Table 1, andthelistof
specifications wasrevisedtoagreewith
current ASTMandAPIspecifications.Additional
sizes and thicknesses whichhad been
added to API specifications wereadded to Table 2. That edition was approved as an
AmericanNational Standard on August19,1985.
The next edition included additional wall thicknesses and was approved by the American
National Standards Institute onAugust24,1995.
The current edition contains revisions to Table 2, adding pipe sizes, changing some plain
endweightsandmasses,identifyingmetricpipe
by the dimensionless designatorDN,and
eliminating theAPISpecificationcolumn.This
edition wasapprovedas
anAmerican
National Standard on September 23, 1996.

WELDED AND SEAMLESS WROUGHT STEEL PIPE

1 SCOPE

Wpe = 10.69(0 - t)t

This Standard covers the standardization of dimensions of weldedand seamless wrought steel pipe for
high or low temperatures and pressures.
The word pipe is used .as distinguished from tube
toapplyto tubular products of dimensions commonly
used for pipeline and piping systems. Pipe dimensions
of sizes 12 in. and smaller have outside diameters
numerically larger than corresponding sizes. In contrast,
the outside diameters of tubes are numerically identical
tothe size number for all sizes.

where
W,, = nominalplainendweightroundedtothe
nearest 0.01 Ib/ft
D = outside diameter to the nearest 0.001 in. (the
for OD only in
symbol D istobeused
mathematical equations or formulas)
r = specifiedwall thickness rounded to the nearest 0.001 in.
The nominal plain end mass, in kilograms per meter,
is calculated usingthe following formula:

2 SIZE

W,, = 0.0246615(D - t )t

The size of all pipeisidentified

by thenominal
pipe size.
The manufacture of pipe NPS
to NPS 12 inclusive
is based on a standardized outside diameter (OD). This
OD was originally selected so that pipe with a standard
OD andhaving a wall thickness whichwastypical
of theperiodwouldhavean
inside diameter (ID)
approximately equal to thenominal
size. Although
there is no such relation between the existing standard
thickness - OD andnominal size - these nominal
sizes and standard ODs continue in use as standard.
The manufacture of pipe NPS 14 and larger proceeds
on the basisof an OD corresponding to the nominalsize.

3 MATERIALS

6 PERMISSIBLE VARIATIONS

The dimensional standards for pipe described here

are for products covered in the ASTM and API specifications listed in Table 1.

Variations in dimensions differ depending upon the

method of manufacture employed in making the pipe to
the various specifications listed in Table I . Permissible
variations for dimensions are indicated in each specification.

4 WALL THICKNESS

The nominalwall thicknesses are given in Table 2.

7 PIPE THREADS

5 WEIGHTS

Unless otherwise swcified. the threads of threaded

pipe shall conform to ANSI/ASME B1.20.1,
Pipe
Threads, General Purpose (Inch).
Schedules 5 and IO wall thicknesses do notpermit
threading in accordance withANSUASME B 1.20.1.

The nominal weights of steel pipe are calculated

valuesand are tabulated in Table 2.
The nominalplainendweight,in
pounds per foot,
is calculated using the following formula:

to establish
Schedule Numbers or new designations for them.

The wallthickness
designations Standard, ExtraStrong, andDoubleExtra-Stronghave
been commercially used designations for many years. As explained in
the Foreword, the Schedule Numbers were subsequently
added as a convenient designation for usein ordering
pipe. Standard and Schedule 40 are identical for upto
NPS 10 inclusive. All larger sizes of Standardhave
'/8 in.wallthicknesses.Extra-Strongand Schedule 80
are identical for up to NPS 8 inclusive. All larger sizes
ofExtra-Stronghave '/2 in. wall thicknesses.
Pipe of sizesandwallthicknesses
other thanthose
of Standard, Extra-Strong, and DoubleExtra-Strong,
and Schedule Number were adopted from API Specifi-

9 WALLTHICKNESSSELECTION
When the selection of wall thickness depends primarily upon capacity to resist internal pressure under given
conditions, the designer shall compute the exact value
ofwall thickness suitable for conditions for which the
pipe is required, as prescribed in detail in theASME
BoilerandPressureVessel
Code, ASME B31 Code
for Pressure Piping, or other similar codes, whichever
governs the construction. A thickness shall be selected
from Table 2 to suit thevaluecomputed to fulfill the
conditions for whichthepipeis
desired.
