INTRODUCTION
The SLM100 is a smoke limiting device. When used in con-
junction with a modied GAC speed control unit, like the ES-
D5524E, can substantially reduce the smoke being emitted
from the diesel engine. Gensets using a turbocharged diesel
engine as a drive produce an unwanted smoky environment
at start-up and during sudden load increases, especially
when a boost fuel-limiting device is not used. This is most
noticeable on Cummins engines operating with an EFC gov-
ernor. Under normal operation, when the load on a genset
is suddenly increased, the engine speed will decrease and
the speed controller will recognize this and counter with an
instant increase in fuel. By the time the turbocharger unit
reacts to the need for more air intake, the controller has
already compensated for the load. This results in an over
abundance of fuel in the engine which in turn generates a
few seconds of unwanted smoke each time the load chang-
es. Turbocharger units are typically slower to react to this
change compared to the speed controller.
DESCRIPTION

The SLM100 has a built-in pressure sensor that is directly
connected to the turbocharger unit. The SLM100 receives
an output signal from this pressure sensor and generates a
signal directly proportional to the internal pressure of the tur-
bocharger. The SLM100 calculates a response to this signal
and passes it on to the modied GAC speed control, which in
turn will adjust the output current to the actuator. This action
will reduce the fuel going to the engine as long as the tur-
bocharger unit has not reached its high-pressure threshold.
This results in a substantial reduction in smoky emissions
during load transients and an increase in fuel economy.
INSTALLATION
The SLM100 module is hard-potted and therefore rugged
enough to be placed in a control cabinet or engine mount-
ed enclosure with other control equipment. Extreme heat
should be avoided. After mounting the SLM100, preferably
near the ESD5524E, the following connections are made:
See the Wiring Diagram. Connect Terminal 1 of the SLM100
to Terminal P (10V DC output) of the ESD5524E. Connect
Terminal 2 of the SLM100 to Terminal G (Ground) of the
ESD5524E. Connect Terminal 3 of the SLM100 to Terminal
H of the ESD5524E. The tubing connection for the pressure
sensor must be located on the turbocharger unit.
ADJUSTMENTS
Preset the SLM100 as follows:
Zero Adj Connect a DC voltmeter to the SLM100 so that
the positive probe is attached to TP1 and the negative probe
is attached to Terminal 2 (GND). Turn the Zero Adjust pot
CW or CCW to get as close as you can to 0 V DC. This value
should not be greater than 75mV.
Current Limit With the engine running at normal operating
speed and no load, turn the Current Limit pot slowly CCW to
the point where you notice a decrease in speed, then turn it
slightly CW.
Ramp The position of the Ramp pot is a trade-off between
fuel economy and the engines ability to quickly react to fre-
quently changing loads. As an example, in a crane applica-
tion the load can be changed from no load to some level of
the load several times within the span of a second. In a case
like this it is better to have Ramp at 80-100% CW. If normal
changes of load are less frequent, the position of Ramp can
be adjusted to 40-50% CW or less.
Gain Adjusted to minimize smoke.
Temp Cal This calibration adjustment is going to depend
on several factors. If the unit is placed in a high ambient tem-
perature environment, the value and polarity of the output
voltage may or may not change. If there are no changes,
Temp Cal should be set to 50% of the maximum rotation
of the pot. If the changes are positive, adjust the Temp Cal
proportionally CW. If negative, then CCW adjustment will be
needed.
