This document summarizes a conference on engaging communities in sustainable tourism development held from June 23-26, 2013. It discusses a conceptual framework for analyzing the factors that influence local community support for sustainable rural tourism development. The framework identifies eight supporting factors and four opposing factors based on stakeholder theory, social exchange theory, network theory, game theory, and strategic management theory. The conclusions recommend promoting rural tourism through community-inclusive events, directing efforts to increase tourism benefits, and giving opportunities to local communities. The study contributes a conceptual framework for sustainable rural tourism development and identifies community quality of life and cultural promotion as supporting factors.

SUSTAINABLE TOURISM DEVELOPMENT International Conference 23 26 June, 2013 Conceptualising a Framework to Analyse the Factors Influencing the Local Communitys Support for Sustainable Rural Tourism Development (SRTD) Samuel Folorunso Adeyinka-Ojo

Over the years there has been a growing concern for sustainability rooted in resource management (Cooper, 2012). The concept of sustainability derived its root in tourism from the Brundtland Commissions report Our Common Future in 1987 (World Commission on Economic and Development [WCED], 1987). Sustainable Tourism Development (STD)
STD is tourism which is economically viable but does not deplete the resources on which the future of tourism will depend, especially the physical environment and the social values of the local community (Swarbrooke, 2006). Sustainable Rural Tourism Development (SRTD) SRTD can be described as the application of STD practices to rural destination.
Theories underpinning the factors influencing the Local Communitys Support (LCS) for SRTD Theories Supporting factors Opposing factors Stakeholder Theory (ST) Community attachment; quality of life; Residents occupational identity Social Exchange Theory (SET) Tourism benefits; conservation of tourism environment; promotion of culture, festival and gastronomy. Negative tourism impacts (costs); Network Theory (NT) Community involvement, sense of community *Game Theory (GT) Participation in decision- making process Strategic Management Theory (SMT) Economic independence from tourism; robust state of the economy *Power-Relations Theory (PRT) inin
Eight Supporting Factors (see the framework) Four Opposing Factors (see the framework) Moderating factors (Gender and Power) for future studies (Nunkoo et al., 2009) Proposed conceptual Framework for SRTD Implications
SRTD can be promoted through the staging of events that will take into consideration the participation and involvement of the local community/residents.
Destination and community managers should direct their efforts towards activities that can increase the tourism benefits for STD.
Opportunities should be given to the local community for ease
.. Conclusion One of the significant contributions of this study include the adaptation and application of relationship- based theories, resource-based theories and politicsbased theories in understanding LCS For SRTD Study contribution in three perspectives Conclusion Third contribution - this study proposed a conceptual framework for SRTD Second contribution the study uncovered the quality of life, promotion of culture, festivals and gastronomy as supporting factors for SRTD. Finally, the study recommend further research on gender and power The funding for this project is made possible through the research grant obtained from the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia (MOHE) under the Long Term Research Grant Scheme (LRGS), 2011.
