INSPECTION CHECKLIST

This checklist should be utilised to conduct a thorough inspection of manual handling equipment:
(a) when originally purchased, received and put into service

(b) after mishaps, drops and impacts; and

(c) periodically (minimum of annually).

A visual inspection should also be conducted prior to each use.

Where a defect is found, the equipment shall be marked and taken out of service for either repair by a
competent person or destruction.

1.0 LADDER CONDITION (ladders should be visually inspected before each use)
1.1 Does the ladder have a load rating of a minimum of
120kg (see manufacturers labels on the ladder)?

1.2 The ladder is clean and in good working condition.

1.3 The ladder stands firm and does not wobble.

1.4 There are no dents, bends or damage, eg. distorted,
deformed flanges or excessively dented rungs.

1.5 All pivoting or rotating surfaces move freely.

1.6 All bolts and riverts are present and secure

1.7. All hardware connections are present and secure
(eg. spreaders and hinges etc).

1.8 All rung or tread-to-stile connections are secure.

1.9 There is a safe operating procedure (SOP) on safe
ladder usage.


2.0 LADDER FEATURES
2.1 Steps or rungs provide good slip resistance.

2.2 Ladder feet (rubber or similar non-slip material) are
not excessively worn or missing.

2.3 If the ladder has wheels, do the wheels move freely
and lock into place when weight is placed on the
ladder?

2.4 Plastic or fibreglass ladders free from splinters of
exposed fibres

2.5 Timber ladder free of splinters, spilt paint and
other opaque deposits






3.0 EXTENSION LADDER
3.1 Ropes free of fraying, wear, rot or other damage.

3.2 Clutches, stops, guide irons and pulleys in good
condition and operate correctly.


4.0 FIXED LADDERS
4.1 The ladder is securely mounted to a wall or other
fixed structure.

4.2 If the ladder is greater than 2 metres, is a ladder
cage provided.

4.3 If the ladder is greater than 2 metres, is a fall
protection system available, ie. harness point.


5.0 PLATFORM LADDER
5.1 The platform has a surface with good slip
resistance.

5.2 Platform ladder has side rails or handrails to assist
with maintaining 3 points of contact with the ladder at all
times.

5.3 Platform ladder has guardrail around the working
platform.
