November 7-9, 2014 www.virginia-iro.org/vamun VAMUN is an annual Model UN conference hosted at the University of Virginia for high school students who want to draft potential solutions to international crises in an environment that stresses quality, success, and collaboration. This years conference, VAMUN XXXIV, is purposefully organized to have only two general assemblies that have fewer than 100 delegations so as to focus on smaller specialized and crisis committees. The International Relations Organization recruits some of the best future diplomats to be chairs, crisis directors, and staff to ensure that delegates are challenged and excited to meet higher expectations. This, academic curiosity and excellence, is one of the factors that separates VAMUN from other conferences. Since the conferences founding over thirty years ago, committees and events have been held within some of the most historic buildings of Virginia. Architectural brilliance echoes the goal of the conference professionalism, quality, and achievement. These intimate com- mittees allow delegates to delve deeply into the core of specific issues, grasp them fully, and offer comprehensive solutions. These fast- paced committees pro- vide each delegate with the unique opportunity to speak often, leading to a higher level of de- bate and fostering new skills: speech, argumen- tation, and compromise. Representing the interconnected world President and UVa Alum Mr. Wilson recognized and shaped, the Wilson Global Systems Simula- tion allows delegates to experience the topic from many vantage points. Comprised of 6 extremely varied bodies, the Wilson Global Systems Simulation promises a daring and unique approach to diplomacy. The most advanced and intensive Model United Nations experience to date, the Jefferson Committee on Diplomacy puts premiere delegates on their toes in pure Jeffersonian fashion. The immense interaction and high caliber debate go unparalleled as this committee environment cultivates the skills of only the top delegates. Usually regarded as the most complex committees of any conference, Crisis Committees place delegates in the center of an ongo- ing issue, allowing them to both create the future and rewrite the past. VAMUN takes this one step further. By placing the delegates into a crisis simulation without a pre-ordained ending, we promote creative debate and exhaustive solution seek- ing. In VAMUN crises, the delegates write the script. Often the first committees in which a Model UN delegate competes, General Assemblies are a staple of every conference. In the spirit of academic rigor, however, VAMUN has decided to add new flair to these usually standard committees. By thrusting students into an international body assigned an original topic, VAMUN allows students to gain valuable experience exploring cooperation, unity, and policymaking. Students affectionately call the campus grounds and freshmen first years because they know it is unique to other colleges across the nation.
