Botanical expert Varro Tyler, author of Tylers Honest Herbal, and Mark Blumenthal, founder of the American Botanical
Council, look at six popular herbs and what the latest research says about the health pros and cons of using thes
botanical products. Theres no conclusive evidence on the use of many herbs, and scientists are continuing to study them.

Echinacea
Most common use: Boosting the immune system to reduce the severity and duration of colds and
flu.
Cautions: May cause dermatitis in sensitive patients. Theoretically, use is not advised in cases
of autoimmune diseases such as lupus.
Research update: Some of the studies have shown that if taken at the first sign of a cold,
it shortens the duration and lessens the symptoms.

Echinacea

Garlic
Most common use: Mild reduction in cholesterol; prevention of plaque buildup in arteries.
Cautions: People taking aspirin or other anticoagulant drugs should avoid eating large amounts of
the herb.
Research update: Study out of Berlin suggests that its beneficial for preventing deposits on
arteries, thus may prevent clogged arteries. Some studies show mild reduction in cholesterol
levels, possibly 4% to 6%

Garlic

St. Johns wort

Most common use: Treating mild to moderate depression.
Cautions: Should not be used at the same time as prescription antidepressants. Should
not be used at all with the drug indinavir, an HIV therapy. May lower the effectiveness of
immunosuppressant drugs, cardiac drugs and possibly oral contraceptives.
Research update: A recently published study showed it is not effective in treating moderate
to severe depression, but botanical experts say other research indicates that the herb
is effective for treating milder forms of depression. A large study is underway.

St.Johns
wort

Ginkgo biloba

Ginkgo biloba

Most common use: Treating age-related cognitive decline. Improvement of

distance and pain-free walking in peripheral arterial occlusive disease, which is caused
by inadequate blood supply to the legs.
Cautions: Rare stomach or intestinal upsets, headaches or allergic skin reaction. Should
be used with caution with blood-thinning drugs.
Research update: U.S. study published in 1997 found that ginkgo was safe and
significantly improved cognitive performance and social functioning in some patients with
Alzheimers-type dementia. A large trial is in the works.

Asian ginseng

Ginseng

Most common use: Boosting mental and physical resistance to stress, building up general
vitality and fighting fatigue.
Cautions: May experience insomnia if the herb is taken right before bedtime. Should be
avoidedduring pregnancy.
Research update: Some European studies show that older patients feel better when they take
ginseng. Not proven that the herb is a performance and endurance enhancer in humans.

Saw palmetto
Most common use: Treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-malignant
enlargement of the prostate that causes urination.
Cautions: Take with food to avoid problems.
Research update: Review of studies shows that it
appears to work; the end result is that patients have increased urinary flow and
dont have to get up as much at night.

Grazing? Thats right, grazingeating six or more small meals each day. This
alternative eating style may provide several benefits. Grazing can help to maintain a
healthy weight, lower blood cholesterol, and control blood sugar. This eating plan can
also help regulate appetite, increase metabolic rate, and allow for better absorption of
nutrients. Grazing also matches an active, on-the-go lifestyle.
Mini-meals are not snack eaten between larger meals. Instead they are a variety
of small portions eaten throughout the day. The real challenge with this eating style is
eating enough servings from each food group while not over-eating. Each mini-meal
should be thought out and selected from nutritious foods, just as you would with your
other meals.
A few tips can help you master grazing. Keep each mini-meal about the same size
to avoid over-eating and yet satisfy your appetite. Appetiser-size portions in restaurants
and at home are about the right size for mini-meals. You dont have to plan six or more
different little meals each day. You could instead take the meals you eat now and divide
them up throughout the day.
Grazing may not be for everyone. For some, frequent snacking could lead to
over-eating. Obesity experts generally advise that overweight people not graze since it
may promote mindless eating. In addition, eating many times throughout the day may
be inconvenient for some.
Remember that ultimately it is not how or when you eat that matters, but what
you eat. The most important thing is to choose an eating style that matches your
personal needs and lifestyle and helps you make the best food choices possible.

Genetics plays a big role in the way our skin develops, determining its color,
pore concentration, thickness, even the number of veins and nerves situated in its
deepest layer. Yet your skins well-being not only depends on a really efficient,
scientific skincare routine, but on a healthy lifestyle too.
Getting enough sleep is important, for example, because this is the time
when skin works especially hard at repairing itself. Lack of it leaves skin looking
dull. If youre suffering from insomnia, the chances are that stress is a significant
factor. Whereas happiness makes skin glow, stress makes skin show the worst side
of its nature. Spots, pimples, eczema, blotchiness and flakiness: these are just
some of the stress symptoms you may see in your skin.
Luckily, one of the best ways of reducing stress is also very beneficial to
skin: getting more exercise. Both aerobic exercise such as tennis, dancing, and
jogging, and anaerobic exercise like stretching and yoga, are highly beneficial,
because they improve circulation. And it is blood that brings the vitamins and
nutrients necessary for cell metabolism to the skin. For your general well-being,
it is always best to mix the two types of exercise.
If you are not eating healthily, it certainly becomes evident swiftly in your skin,
which loses its glow and shine. The problem can be as simple as a lack of vitamin
C, which plays a vital role in collagen formation and cell repair. Although vitamin C
is found in fresh fruit like melon, oranges, and even in tomatoes, the body cannot
store it. Therefore, it needs regular supplies. Other important vitamins are the B
group, especially B2 and B12 and vitamin E, along with zinc.
But vitamin and mineral supplements are not the complete answer. The best
way to obtain a balanced mix of vitamins and minerals is to eat the freshest, most
natural foods. A diet rich in unsaturated fats such as olive oil rather than butter,
unprocessed fiber, raw fruit and vegetables and low-fat protein such as fish and
chicken will provide everything your skin needs. If you can cut out caffeine, smoking
and alcohol, so much the better.
Do not forget to drink as much water as you can each day: six glasses at
least. It helps every organ in your body function better, aiding digestion, circulation
and even excretion of toxins through the skins pores.

Scorpion stings rarely leave a trace, so when 10-year-old Michael

Moerdler-Green woke up at 3 am during a recent family trip to Phoenix,
Arizona, all he knew was that his leg hurt. But as the scorpions poison began
to spread, his body started to tingle, his eyes rolled around in his head and his
legs and arms began to flail.
At the emergency room of Phoenix Childrens Hospital, doctors
offered Michaels parents a choice of treatments: heavy sedation to quell the
boys symptoms, or an experimental anti-venom made in Mexico but not
approved for use in the US. The boys father, Dr. David Moerdler-Green,
chose the anti-venom. A new study suggests he made the right decision.
No other anti-venom specifically for scorpion stings is available in the
United States, and a small clinical trial of young children stung by bark
scorpions has found that most of those given the investigational drug
recovered within two hours, while children given a placebo had symptoms
that lasted four hours or more and required heavy sedation and
hospitalization.
It was like a miracle, said Dr. Moerdler-Green, who is head of
radiology at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, New York. His son was able
to leave the hospital just an hour after receiving the medication. How many
people go into the emergency room around the world and are able to get
medication and be cured in the course of one hour?
Dr. Leslie V. Boyer, director of a venom research institute at the
University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson said the trial, though
small, demonstrated bark scorpion venom could be quickly neutralized, so
using this anti-venom in the emergency room would make intensive care
treatment unnecessary for most patients.

1. findings
2. rationale
3. methodology

2. Dr. Boyer first introduced anti-venom into the United States.
3. Dr. Moerdler-Green shares a common opinion with Dr. Boyer.
4. Dr. Boyer used anti-venom made in Mexico before Dr. Moerdler-Green.

and are able to get medication and be cured in the course of one hour? (lines 19-21), he was
likely feeling ______.

No matter where you live or when you were born, you almost surely have at least
a small amount of DDT stored in the fatty tissues of your body. Why? This
notorious toxic pesticide, which led to the extinction of the American bald eagle
in 1970s, has long been banned in the U.S. and most other developed countries.
But according to a new report by the World Wildlife Fund in Washington, DDT
is still used in many developing nations, mainly because its so effective in
controlling mosquitoes that carry the malaria parasite.
The persistence of DDT is a problem-and not just in the countries that use it.
DDT and several other common chlorine-containing pesticides are sturdy
molecules that can stay intact for decades. They evaporate into the atmosphere
and are blown by the wind all over the globe. They condense and fall to the
ground in cold weather, especially in higher altitudes. Some of the highest
concentrations of DDT are found in polar bears, penguins and the Inuit people of
northern Canada.
Although levels of DDT contamination are gradually falling in countries where
the pesticide has been banned, new scientific research suggests that the chemicals
are still a serious threat everywhere. Studies show that even small amounts of
pesticides can disrupt the working of human hormones, interfering with
reproduction and the functioning of the immune system. Thats why
representatives of more than 100 nations gathered at a U.N. meeting in Nairobi
to work toward a global treaty that would phase out DDT and 11 other
pesticides, known as the "dirty dozen." Environmentalists say its possible to
find alternative way to fight malaria-and get rid of DDT once and for all.

2. A small amount of pesticides can disrupt the working of both human hormone and immune system.
3. The molecules of DDT and several other common chlorine-containing pesticides cannot be damaged for
many years.
4. A global treaty that would phase out DDT and 11 other notorious toxic pesticides should be enacted very soon.

When asked about the future of TV and of video on the internet, people reveal
profound differences in attitudes based on age groups, We asked people ages 12-64
if they agreed with two statements about the future of TV and competition with the
computer for entertainment time. When asked whether they agreed that the
computer increasingly competes with the TV for my entertainment time, 29% of
people said they agreed or strongly agreed with the statement. Males overall
agreed at a slightly higher rate than females, and, importantly when looking at
future trends, the younger generation of 18-to-24-year-olds was considerably more
focused on the computer as competition for the TV; 36% agreed vs. 29% for the
total population. Only 25% of 35-to 44-year-olds said the computer competes with
the TV for entertainment. When we asked consumers if the internet represents
the future of video viewing, the group that agreed most strongly was the 18-to-24
group with 28% of men agreeing and 20% of women. Clearly, the 18-to-24
