New Season
(L-R) Carlie Taylor and Marta Ng are local mums who have been nominated in the AusMumpreneur awards.

Home sweet home

Two innovative Bacchus

Marsh businesswomen have
been nominated for the
national AusMumpreneur
Awards.
Carlie Taylor of CJ Sweet
Treats and Marta Ng of Heidi
Ho Designs both began their
home-based enterprises as
a way to be creative, earn
income and spend quality
time with their families.
After trying for many
months to secure a part-time
job with hours that worked
around her children, Ms
Taylor set up CJ Sweet Treats
from her home kitchen.
Starting off with cupcakes,
cake pop and macaron
sales at markets, she is now
sought after for her bespoke
wedding cakes.
Ms Taylor said there were
many benefits to balancing
business and motherhood.
While helping to support

my family financially, and

satisfying my need to be
creative, I am still at home
with my children. I am still
able to do school drop-offs
and pick-ups and if they are
ever home sick Im still home
whilst working.
She said it was all about
finding balance between
family life and work. Your
own business can take up so
much of your time but you
need to remember why you
started it in the first place
to be at home with and support your children. Its very
easy to get caught up in your
business once it grows and
starts to take up more and
more of your time.
Marta Ng was born in Poland and immigrated to
Australia 13 years ago. She
designs and makes 1950s
style aprons for mums and
daughters, little boys and

big boys too! They are frilly.

They are cute. Just what your
inner house goddess would
love, she said. I originally
started as little girls pinnies
and mum and daughter sets,
but due to demand the adult
aprons sort of took over.
Ms Ng said she began her
business because I wanted
to still be able to spend as
much time as I could with
my kids while contributing
to the family finances.
The mother of three, including a child with high
functioning autism, said she
also needed an outlet for
myself.
The greatest challenge
so far has been getting the
name out there and time
management. Always remember to try and be flexible and work around your
family and their needs, she
said.

The 2014 AusMumpreneur

Awards are presented by
The AusMumpreneur Network and aim to celebrate
and recognise mums in business achieving outstanding
success in areas such as business, product development,
services and innovation in
business.
Finalists will be selected
by a public vote at www.
ausmumpreneur.com with
voting closing at midnight
on Monday, October 6. The
winners of the 2014 AusMumpreneur Awards will
be announced at a glamorous awards event in Melbourne this October.

Rubbish weather
A TORNADO of litter from
the Maddingley Brown
Coal site has rained down
across busy roads and private property following last
Thursdays extreme weather
conditions.
Maddingley Brown Coal
(MBC) environmental quality and safety manager,
Tim Tillig, said the weather
events were extreme over a
36 hour period and resulted
in litter escaping from the
landfill.
We didnt suspend operations but we did try to minimise truck movements, Mr
Tillig said.
Weve already deployed
litter crews to pick up the
rubbish. Theyll also be
knocking on the doors of
privately owned property
and offering to pick it up.
He said MBC had recently
obtained permission from
the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to install a 14 metre high litter
fence. Weve commenced
the design and it should be
installed in the very near
future.
The MBC mine has operated since 1948 and has three
core activities: mining coal;
landfill and recycling materials. When coal has been excavated, the void is refilled
using inert landfill waste
such as building materials.
On its website MBC claims
to manage litter by using
covers, monitoring severe
weather events, have site
staff pick up litter and use
nets where appropriate. Mr
Tillig said the mobile nets
they sometimes used to capture litter werent as effective
as a permanent litter fence.
We do have cover material
placed down for each days
operation, he said.
He said the extreme weather conditions appeared to
have blown litter from the
active tipping area. Weve
lost litter before but not to
this extent, he said.
Concerned Balliang East

resident Samantha Mcgaw

said it was distressing to see
all of the litter scattered for
kilometres across the Geelong Bacchus Marsh Highway and private properties.
The profits made from
using the site for industrial waste landfill would
be nothing compared to
the cost of getting people to
clean up the litter, Ms Mcgaw said.
There is a very high percentage of plastic being
dumped there. I would like
the company to take up a
policy of no plastics being
dumped there.
I have a strong passion for
the environment and teach

children about caring for the

environment and sustainability. Its heartbreaking to
see all of this plastic litter.
Mr Tillig said the company
was licensed for the disposal
of solid industrial waste,
including plastics. We do
recycle some materials but
it depends on the waste
producer.
He said the EPA had recently given works approval for
the next stage of the landfill
at Bacchus Marsh (known as
Stage Two) because the current landfill area (known as
Stage One) was nearly full.
An EPA spokeswoman said
EPA had received reports
from residents of Bacchus

Marsh regarding windblown litter from the MBC

landfill.
EPA sets standards for
industry with regard to protect the community. When
there is a clear breach of
these standards and an identifiable source, EPA can take
action, she said.
In this case, EPA is satisfied
that the litter has escaped
beyond the site boundary
due to the extreme weather
conditions.
At the time of going to print
Moorabool Shire Council
had not responded to enquiries made by The Moorabool News.

More sporting facilities necessary

Moorabool Shire is advocating to candidates in the
upcoming state election to
address the urgent lack of
recreation facilities in the
shire.
Extra recreation reserves
are urgently needed to cater
for Moorabools increasing
population, particularly in
the east of the shire.
A recent Moorabool Shire
study on the future sport-

ing needs of Bacchus Marsh

and Ballan showed a clear
gap between current facilities and growing population
needs.
The study showed Bacchus
Marsh urgently needed five
additional Australian Rules
football ovals, two additional cricket ovals, four additional soccer fields, three
additional netball courts and
two additional indoor sports
courts.

Ballan desperately needed

one additional Australian
Rules oval, one additional
netball court and one additional
multi-purpose
pavilion.
Moorabool mayor Paul
Tatchell urged politicians
from all sides of state politics
to commit to a plan to build
extra recreation facilities
or risk people or teams not
being able to play sport because they have nowhere to

play within the shire.

We have heard stories in
Bacchus Marsh of capped
numbers in football and soccer clubs, soccer clubs having 20-odd players a team,
so kids are hardly getting
a go on the field, basketball
games running until after
10pm at night to fit in all the
games not to mention the
pressure on maintenance of
facilities due to overuse, Cr
Tatchell said.

Newborns in the district

What happens when we

see capping and sports bursting at the seams, and unable
to take on more participants,
is people becoming discouraged and disengaged.
Governments
promote
sport and fitness as a healthy
and vital part of life, but they
need to provide adequate
facilities to ensure that everyone has access to participate, Cr Tatchell said.

Council is seeking commitment from candidates

to bridge funding gaps that
will enable essential infrastructure to become a reality.
The shires top seven priorities for the state election
consist of projects relating
to transport, recreation, local
employment, early childhood services and sewerage
infrastructure.

Tourism doors flung open

Some of Moorabools key tourism assets
were showcased to visitor information
centre coordinators from across the state
last week.
This year Moorabool Shire, Macedon
Ranges Shire, Hepburn Shire and Hume
City Council were chosen to showcase
their offerings for the 14th annual Victorian
Visitor Information Centre Summit.

Run annually by the Victoria Tourism

Industry Council, the summit offered
an opportunity for those in the visitor
servicing sector to thoroughly explore
a region of the state and take part in a
professional development program and
networking opportunities.

Participants in a familiarisation tour had

the opportunity to sample some of the farm
gates, wineries, gorges, attractions and
cafes of the Moorabool Shire with stops
including Lal Lal Falls, St Annes Winery,
Mill Cottage Caf and Werribee Gorge.

Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said it was

exciting to throw open the gates and doors
of Moorabools great attractions and show
off the Shires natural beauty.
This is a wonderful opportunity to show
others why Moorabool is a great place to
visit and we hope the delegates who did the
Moorabool familiarisation had a wonderful
time, Cr Tatchell said.

As part of the three-day event, Cr

Tatchell and Cr Alan Comrie represented
Moorabool Shire Council at a gala dinner
last Thursday night in Sunbury.

More trees for a change

A vision for Ballan to become an arboretum township is gathering momentum.
In March this year a group of Ballan residents launched a novel idea to turn Ballan
into a town-wide arboretum and showcase the significance and beauty of Ballans trees. While traditional arboretums
were normally found at botanic gardens,
the group believed the concept could be
applied to a new vision for Ballans future.
On hearing the idea, Moorabool based
academic Michael Howard knew hed
found a fascinating teaching tool for his
landscape architecture students at RMIT.
Commencing this semester, his students
will visit Ballan to begin working on a design challenge that involves familiarising
themselves with the township, researching traditional arboretums and then investigating how an arboretum could be
extended to encompass a town. By the
end of the semester, each student will
document their ideas in the form of new
designs for tree plantings in Ballan.
The idea of investing in trees for the future also inspired another group of local
residents the Ballan Quilt and Craft
Group. For ten years the group held an
annual exhibition as part of the Ballan
Autumn Festival, raising money to support arts and crafts education and other
community purposes. In 2012 the group
held its final exhibition and, after a decade

of fundraising activities, had a surplus of
funds. The group decided to donate $5000
towards a Ballan arboretum.
Group member Brenda Leeding said:
We want everybody to enjoy the trees,
both locals and visitors.

The donation will be used to plant deciduous trees at Ballans eastern and western
entrances.

Breast is
best for
baby

This week (August 1-7) marks World

Breastfeeding Week, where the importance of
breastfeeding is celebrated in more than 175
countries worldwide.
In celebration of World Breastfeeding Week,
some local Australian Breastfeeding Association
(ABA) members will be at The Village, Bacchus
Marsh on Saturday 9 August, 9am 1pm, offering
informational pamphlets and friendly support.
ABA president Rachel Fuller said: Breastmilk
is the normal food for human babies. It contains
all the requirements necessary for a babys
development for the first six months and remains
the most important part of the babys diet, with
the addition of family foods, until around 12
months. Breastmilk continues to provide a
valuable source of nutrition and immunological
protection for two years and beyond.
Ms Fuller said less than half (39 per cent) of
babies are still being exclusively breastfed to
three months and less than one quarter (15 per
cent) to five months.
Residents of Moorabool Shire are offered support
through a monthly support group meeting run
by locally trained breastfeeding counsellors and
held in the Moorabool Shire Council offices in
Darley. For more information contact Moorabool
Shire on 5366 7100.

Safe ride wins title

Ballan teenager Jesse McNally has taken out the

A-Lites class in the 2014
Victorian Senior Motocross
Championships.
The 17-year-old was leading
the class by 16 points going
into the final round at Shepparton on July 19 and 20. He
said he rode safe in the
final race and came second
overall, which was enough
to win his first senior state
title ahead of Wayne Stewart (2nd) and Ryan Shadbolt
(3rd).
McNally has made a name
for himself on the motocross
circuit this year after being
elevated to the A grade level
in the middle of last years
racing season. This season
he won the first three rounds
from three starts, placed
third twice in Rosebud in
May and picked up another
win and two seconds at Colac in June.
He also came second in the
Under 19s Expert Class behind Jack Simpson.
This month he travelled to
China to compete in the 2014
FIM China International
Motocross
Invitational
Event in Shuozhou, where
he claimed second overall to
an Italian rider in the 250cc
international class.
In the state championships
each race was 20 minutes
plus one lap and in China

Championships. Photo courtesy Geoff Peddler
the races were 30 minutes
plus one lap, McNally said.
He also participated in
some of the national racing
series but said it was too
hard and too expensive to
travel interstate.
He works full-time as a
plumber during the week,
does gym training after
work and races on the weekends. The hardest part is
keeping motivated to go to
the gym and do the training
off the bike. I do all the hard
work during the week and
the fun bit is getting on the

bike and racing.

He said he would welcome
any sponsorship to help
him focus on motocross and
travel to races. He currently
relies on mates to drive
him everywhere until hes
old enough to get a drivers
licence.
He said he was inspired by
the motocross rookies in the
United States and how they
come out and smoke all the
pros.
Theyre the best of the best
over there.

Jesse McNally claimed an overall second when he

Moorabool Shire Mayor Cr
Paul Tatchell is urging local
business operators and community members to Have

an online survey aimed at
guiding the development of
Moorabools new Economic

Cr Tatchell said broad industry and community participation was vital.
Planning for Moorabools

It is important that people
put their views forward, Cr

Letters to the Editor

Email: news@themooraboolnews.com.au
Dear Editor,
I read with some grim
amusement Jim Stewarts
attempted (MN 22 July,
2014)) discounting of Tom
Kingstons Global Warming
article.
It is the consensus opinion
of 97% of the worlds scientists that Global Warming is
fact and not a fiction.
The only fictional fantasies
(leg o Lamb @ $100.00, anyone?) are being presented by
our conservative politicians
under the sway of coalmining companies, shonky
lobby groups aided by the
notorious Heartland Institute (in turn is funded by
the Koch brothers), the IPA
and the rest of the Murdoch
controlled media.
Jim has to ask himself:
Would he take a Doctors
advice from a medical consultation or prefer Andrew
Bolts opinion on the matter?
Jim also has to ask himself:
Why does Abbotts Government have no Science
Minister?
Jim could ask himself too:
Why has this Government
hitched our economy to coal

which is falling in demand

and price, when worldwide,
other developed economies
are ruthlessly pursuing alternative green energy
sources?
Jim unfortunately presents
a couple of scientists with
very, very selective quoting
to back his assertions. Re:
Judith Curry: (underlining
mine and not quite what Jim
was asserting.)
it is important to emphasize that nothing she
encountered led her to question the science; she still has
no doubt that the planet is
warming, that human-generated greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, are
in large part to blame, or that
the plausible worst-case scenario could be catastrophic.

Jims use of Patrick Moore
is deceptive too, as it was
Moore who gave a glowing
report on Indonesian logging in Rain Forests by Asia
Pulp and Paper which had
been criticised for illegal logging; hardly environmental

Dear Editor,
Last Wednesday the temperature here at Rosewood
in Queensland rose 25 in
just 8 hours - from zero at 6
am to 25 at 2pm. It rose at
the rate of 3 per hour, and
every degree of warmth felt
better.
And then, despite there being 400 ppm of the dreaded
global warming gas in the
atmosphere, the temperature plunged 25 to zero by
the next dawn.
Yet learned people are being paid by governments to
scare us into suicidal energy
policies they say will save us
the horror of possible manmade global warming of
maybe 1-2 per century.

Publication of notices about the Council

Do these people ever (1)

go
outside? Do they ever feel
the powerful life-giving
warmth of the sun? Do they
(2)
notice that all life celebrates
spring? Have they read some
climate history of the abundance during warm eras and
the bleak starvation of the
ice ages? Do they know there
has been no global warming
for 17 years? Are they aware

that the sun has gone ominously quiet and we may
face global cooling, just at
the time their disastrous energy policies leave us shivering in the dark?

Protester in court for

hoax release
Does the name Jonathan
Moylan ring a bell? At this
time of sporting ventures
and such when young people, who are good at running or jumping and the
like, seem to dominate the
photos in the media Jonathans photo might not ring
a bell. Because, you see,
Jonathan did not represent
Australia in Scotland and
did not sign for a new footy
club and did not taste victory on a cooking show
on TV. Jonathan did none
of these things. Rather
Jonathan Moylan recently
faced court on a charge of
fraud and as a result of his
appearance was given a
suspended sentence. What
exactly did Jonathan Moylan do that brought him
face to face with our justice
system, I hear you ask?
Well, in January last

year Jonathan Moylan or

Jono, as he is called by
his friends, circulated a
media release purportedly
from the ANZ bank that
announced ANZs withdrawal of a $1.26 billion
loan facility to Whitehaven
Coal for its Maules Creek
coal project. While this was
an act of fraud on Moylans
part, he was not unduly penalised because the judge
understood that the hoax
press release was not about
personal gain, but a desire
to protect the planet from
Whitehavens new mine.
John Moylan has been
severely criticised for this
action. The main criticism
goes like this, Environmentalists have a right
to protest but not at all
costs. Here in Tasmania the
state government is bringing in laws so that people

who protest logging in old

growth forests or mining
in delicate ecosystems can
be jailed. They can protest
on the steps of parliament
or march up and down
streets but cannot protest
where the action is. Jonathan protested where the
action was. So who is the
criminal in this case; someone who is trying to save
the planet or those who, for
their own gain, are trying
to destroy the planet? Is
this writer exaggerating?
Are coal mining companies
really trying to destroy the
planet? Probably not, but
their actions are certainly
leading to this and that
is no longer in dispute. As
James Hansen says, if we
use all the fossil fuels left,
it is game over for life on
the planet.
In Australia, the public

has been led to believe the

mining sector creates jobs.
The truth is, oil, gas and
coal combined employ
less than 1 per cent of the
workforce. There would be
many more jobs in tourism,
renewable energy, energy
efficiency, public transport
and manufacturing if mining wasnt so politically
privileged.
I would like to finish this
piece with the words of
Thea Ormerod (Eureka
Street - 29 July 2014). I
speak as an insider, but
happily not a stereotypical
one. I am a grandmother
of six, a practising Catholic
and for some years was our
local Catholic youth group
mum. I was drawn to actions at the Leard Forest
because other ways of protecting the future for my
grandchildren were prov-

ing fruitless.
Any perception that environmentalists are coercive, feel they have an unlimited license to protest
or, worse, are violent, as
alleged by the CEO of the
NSW Minerals Council, are
simply false. These claims
do not mesh with my direct
experience of the protestors
at the Leard Forest or of environmentalists generally.
Having stayed with
the protesters and seen
them in action, I have
been impressed with their
disciplined dedication to
an ethic of peaceful nonviolence. They are locking
onto equipment, blockading or perching high in
tress, but the risk is only to
themselves, not to others.
It is not violence to take
these kinds of actions even
if they frustrate the mine

workers and annoy the

police.
If citizens of democracies
are no longer allowed to
organise either civil disobedience or divestment
campaigns, as suggested
by some, God help us. The
ballot box on its own does
not create a robust democracy, and it certainly hasnt
proven able to rein in the
power of the fossil fuel
lobby. How much weaker
would our democracies be
without a range of means
by which to champion the
common good?
What is your opinion?
Next MEG meeting Thursday 28 August at
4256 Geelong Road Parwan
(Jessamy Park signs at
driveway), 7.30pm.
All Welcome

B A L L A N

Ph: 5368 1455 OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK

128 INGLIS STREET, BALLAN

Melbourne has been

dubbed Australias auction capital, but in regional Victoria selling
at auction has been less
popular, with the vast
majority of homes sold
by private sale. This year,
though, that seems to
have changed.
The number of auctions
held in regional Victoria
has increased by 38 per
cent in the year to date
with 1424 auctions held,
compared with 1034 in
the same period last year.
Sales at auction tend
to increase during periods of significant price
growth, with sellers encouraged by the high
prices achieved by others
at auction.
Private sales take place
where an extended sale
and marketing period is
preferred, rather than the
compressed timescale of
an auction. They allow
buyers time to view the
house and consider the
purchase, and tend to be
more popular in slower
market times or in harderto-reach locations.
Not surprisingly, then,
that regional centres
rather than small country
towns featured in the list
of top auction locations in
regional Victoria.

Echuca, with 60 auctions, topped the list as

the location with the
most auctions in regional
Victoria. It also achieved
a solid auction clearance
rate that is, the number
of homes going to auction
that sold. Echucas clearance rate of 46 per cent
was close to the regional
Victorian average rate of
51 per cent.
The next three top auction locations were all in
Geelong. Belmont was in
second place with 46 auctions, Geelong West third
with 47 auctions and
Newtown fourth with 41
auctions. While all three
trailed Echuca in terms of
the number of auctions,
each delivered a clearance
rate above 68 per cent,
well ahead of the average
for regional Victoria.
All three areas have seen
significant
gentrification and a booming cafe
culture, making them
increasingly
attractive
to first-time buyers and
families. East Geelong
was also in the top 10, at
seventh, with 32 auctions
and a clearance rate in
line with Belmont, Geelong West and Newtown.
Mildura was sixth on the
list with 37 auctions and
a 49 per cent clearance
rate. Also in the top 10
were Warrnambool (32
auctions, 31 per cent), Wodonga (32 auctions, 50 per
cent) and Shepparton (31
auctions, 48 per cent).
And while Ballarat Central, with 10 auctions, did
not make it on to the top 10
list for regional Victoria it
led the way with its clearance rate an impressive
90 per cent this year.

QUICK PUZZLE

ARIESMarch 21-April 20
A new romance or friendship is off too a quick start, but
dont ignore emotional needs of established friends. You
are starting to gain financially, but dont announce it to
the world.
TAURUSApril 21-May 22
The flattery you are offered is sugar coated, but basically it is sincere. At work, speak out if you suspect a
conflict of interest. On the homefront, the generation gap
is narrowing.
GEMINIMay 23-June 21
Watch out that you dont take on more than you can handle during this extraordinarily ambitious week. Your
charisma is strong and people will gravitate in your
direction.

Intermediates had their
first series of competition
in Frankston and Geelong. They were awarded
1st - Aesthetics & Revue,
2nd - Clubs & Rods, 3rd Free Exercises and Song &
Dance, Honourable Mention
March, which saw them
awarded the Reserve Aggregate. In Geelong they were
awarded March - 1st, Clubs
- 2nd, Free Exercises - 3rd,

Rods - 3rd, Aesthetics - 3rd

and Song & Dance - 2nd,
Calisthenic Revue - 1st, with
overall results they took the
Aggregate Trophy.
The Juniors had their first
competition last and placed
in every item. March - Honourable Mention, Clubs
- 2nd, Free Exercises - Honourable Mention, Rods - 3rd,
Aesthetics - Honourable
Mention, Folk Dance - Honourable Mention and Revue
- Honourable Mention.

Last Saturday the clubs

cross country event was held
at the Bostock Reservoir, Ballan. The overnight below
zero temperature made for
a heavy frosty morning, but
thankfully by mid-morning
the sun was shining and the
frost had cleared to produce
perfect conditions for the
athletes. The Under 6 athletes led the way, running
first over a distance of 500m.
The meet concluded with the
Under 11 & 12 athletes competing over a 2km course,
through the pine plantations
and along the banks of the
reservoir.
This Saturday will be the
final Cross Country run

for this season and will be

held at Masons Lane Reserve. The meet will have a
Onesie theme and athletes
are encouraged to wear
their onesie to compete in.
Events will be conducted on
a handicap system. Therefore, those with the fastest
season time will take off
last in an attempt to run the
field down. This is often a
chance for athletes to record
a fast time in an endeavour
to claim line honours.
The 2014/15 BMLAC Track
& Field season will commence on Saturday 4 October with registration Days to
be held Friday 19 and Saturday 20 September.

The U12 Senior footballers had a challenge on their
hands with the scores level
at the quarter time break.
Redan dominated the second quarter. With the Cobras implementing a fantastic defensive game, the
second half saw Redan only
score one more point for the
match. The Cobras peppered

however their inaccuracy
was costly, as they could not
repair the scoreboard damage of the first half.
Bacchus Marsh 4.5.29 lost
Redan 6.2.38.
Best - J. Parente, H. Garner,
Z. LeHuray, L. Garner, T.
Overton, M. Cousins.

NETBALL
Breaking the ice on the court
this week, the Under 11 netballers were outclassed by
a more polished outfit. The
girls had good intensity,
worked hard and had a positive attitude. However, the
girls lacked in passing accuracy and were unable to
make the most of their opponents turnovers. Bacchus
Marsh 1 lost Redan 19.
Awards - N. Henare, L. Taylor, J. Taylor.
The U13 Reserve netballers
played a great team game,
sharing and controlling the
ball down the court. Bacchus
Marsh 31 def Redan 9.
Awards - A. Paproth, C. McKenzie, M. Harrington.
The U13 Senior netballers
played a great game of skill
and shooting accuracy. In
the second half Redan put
on great defensive pressure,
making the girls work really
hard to come away with the
win. Bacchus Marsh 26 def
Redan 10.
Awards - C. Dickinson, R.
Jackson, E. Pigott.
A very good first quarter
by Redan had them lead by
six goals at quarter time in
the U15 Reserve grade this
week. Strong defensive skills

and some positive attitudes

helped the Marsh girls to
peg back the lead and take
out a well earned win.
Bacchus Marsh 27 def Redan 25.
Awards - K. Levett, S. Bullard, J. Svaljek, C. Green, M.
Dodd.
A fantastic clean start to the
game saw the U15 Senior
team find plenty of space
and a comfortable lead at
quarter time, going a long
way to helping the girls run
away the eventual winners.
Bacchus Marsh 41 def Redan 16.
Awards - K. Tangey, J.
White, C. Murray, S. Hare,
M. LeHuray, M. White.
The U17 Reserve team

Awards - M. Arandt (BOC),
C. Ash, C. Baselman, T.
Fowler.
This match saw the U17 senior team take on a powerful
Redan outfit. Unfortunately
the girls were outplayed
across the court.

Blues best win for season

Round 15 v Springbank
Football
The Seniors played some
of their best football of the
year and had winners all
across the ground. In ideal
conditions for football and
in front of a big crowd, Mark
Williams set the tenor of the
game and was ably assisted
by Locky Herring. The Blues
defence were in total control
led by Ash Mullane and
Daniel Neilsen. Up forward
Aaron Speak had a red letter
day kicking four goals . The
Tigers were in the game until the final quarter but the
Blues lifted in front of the
big home crowd and put in
their best final quarter performance of the year. It was
a great win against their old
time rivals but finals chances
are now very slim.
Final Score - Ballan 11 8 74
def Springbank 7 7 49
Best - J Wilkinson, A Mullane, D Neilsen, M Williams,
L Herring, J Fenwick.
When the Reserves hit the
paddock conditions were
ideal. In the middle Billy
Smith was in everything and
kept the forward line well
supplied. Rod Watts was a
focal point up forward and
Daniel Romeo mopped up
any scraps. The Blues also
welcomed back Ben Fenwick
from injury and he certainly
made his presence felt. Brad
Cox got into gear later in the
game and started bombing
goals from outside the 50m
arc, making it look easy.

With the final two rounds

remaining, the Blues are in
third spot with little chance
of their position changing.
Final Score - Ballan 14 7 91
def Springbank 5 8 38
Best - B Smith , C Despirit,
R Watts, D Romeo, B Cox, B
Fenwick.
The 17.5s team kept up with
the Tigers in the first half
and at the main break the
margin was only one goal.
Jake Fernandez made the
Tigers earn their possessions in defence and Charlie
Sher was at his creative best
in the middle. But in the
third quarter the Tigers ran
away from the Blues and the
margin blew out to 4 goals.
The Blues stemmed the tide
in the final quarter but the
damage had been done. Zac
Boland was the Blues bright
light up forward.
Final Score - Ballan 5 5 35
lost Springbank 9 5 59
Best - J Mullane, J Fernandez, D Trickey, Z Boland, C
Sher, R Wilkie.
The Tigers were undermanned in the 14.5s and
the Blues were dominant
from the start. Simon Dale
and Travis Meyer were
unmatched in the centre.
Lachlan Conlan made short
work of any attempts that
the Tigers made to go forward. The only failing was
the Blues accuracy up forward. The win has lifted
them to second on the ladder
and now they must focus on
their finals campaign.
Final Score - Ballan 10 10 70
def Springbank 0 0 0
Best - S Dale, L Conlan , T
Meyer, L Furlong, L Hodge,
E Shaw.

Netball
13&Under - Ballan started
slowly with Springbank
taking the lead. Lara Casey
moved into defence and
Anais Clifford into goals,
which helped turn the game
around. Ballan came home
strongly in the last quarter
scoring 12 goals. The girls
accurate passing into the
ring and between goalers Ellie Burquest and Anais Clifford was fantastic, as Lara
Casey and Layla Foster-Travers dominated in defence.
Ballan 22 d Springbank 10.
Awards - Lara Casey, Erynn
Vella.
15&Under - Another close
game saw the girls just beaten but the close games show
how far the girls have come.
Springbank 17 d Ballan 14.
17&Under Springbank
(49) were too strong for Ballan (8).
C Grade - Ballan played
one of their best games of
the season against a strong
Springbank team, the girls
playing well together all
over the court.
Springbank 36 d Ballan 21.
Best on Court - Anna
Conlan.
B Grade - In a finals like
game that went goal for goal
there was nothing separating the two teams, Springbank just managing to get in
front.
Springbank 40 d Ballan 37.
Best on Court - Jayme
Nielsen.
A Grade - Despite giving
the undefeated Springbank
team an early 7 goal lead,
Ballan fought back to take
it right up to them bringing
the scores back to within 2
goals. Ballan made Springbank work hard for their
win.
Springbank 50 d Ballan 10.
Best on Court - Lauren
Byrnes.

Gordon Football Club

Round 15 v Smythesdale

Seniors - Gordon were just

too good for Symthesdale in
the boggy conditions. Gordon dominated the play all
day with 14 individual goal
scorers. Gordon kicked a
massive total of 40 goals for
the game, the main contributors were Mick Nolan with
11 and Ash Munari 7 goals.
Jaymes Gorman showed
blistering speed and kept
the opposition on their toes.
Final score 40.22 (262) d
Smythesdale 1.0 (6)
Best - Tye Murphy, Mick
Nolan, Ash Munari, Stephan
Pye.
Reserves - A good effort by
the team in trying ground
conditions . Better players for the day Matt Conder, Gary Bussittil , Aaron

Grundy and Matt Callinan.

The majority of the day the
team kept with the planned
structures which they will
need to continually improve
on, as they work their way to
the finals.
Final score 21.13 (139) d
Smythesdale 0.0 (0)

Under 17.5 - In heavy conditions the team had a poor

start that cost the game in
the end. The boys battled
well in the second half and
only went down by two
goals at the final siren.
Final score Gordon 2.5 (17)
lost Smythesdale 4.7 (31)
Best - Jack Toohey, Will
Maddern, Andy Johnson,
Rohan Clampitt, Callum
Winter.
Under 14.5 - Gordon had
some nice passages of play
