CHARACTERISTIC OF PAKISTANI SOCIETY

Society:
It is defined as a group of people that common values, virtues and visions. They have a common past,
they share common problems in present similarly they have a common aspiration and vision for the
future. Language and religion are the important tools which is responsible for integration of society.
Language can be defined as a tool to express emotions, expressions and thoughts.

Following are the few chief characteristics of Pakistani Society

1. Society In transition:
1. Basically Pakistani society is a society in transition and transition at a great speed. It is a fact that
change is necessary for grooming and development of the society. Otherwise the society
becomes stagnant and soon vanishes.
2. Two things are important in the development of societies:
o Change (Transition)
o Continuity (Traditions)
3. A society which undergoes only change without continuity cannot sustain for a longer period.
Similarly the society that only continues its tradition without any change also disappears i.e. the
great Roman Empire. So, a balance between change and continuity is required.
4. In case of Islamic society Allah Almighty has given a perfect balance required for the
development of the society.
o Allah has given the continuity through the principles of Shariat.
o The scope of change is given by leaving the gray areas and giving the opportunity of
Ejtihad to Muslims.
5. In case of Pakistani society the change was very rapid, the old traditions used to die very quickly
but we are missing the point of continuity as we have the Principles of Quran and Sunnah. Due
to this gap the society is in chaotic (confused) situation.
6. People are losing their moral and ethical values but no one is there to teach them. This situation is
very dangerous in the lives of societies. Peoples want change. Recent example of transition is
Long March on 16th March, 2009. An historical march by the people f Pakistan for the
independence of judiciary.
7. Due to change old values are dying. Following example illustrates the issue.
o In the past there was Joint Family system and hence there was no socio-economic
difference between the family members of the same family. But due to change the Joint
Family system broken down and there are socio-economic difference even between the
members of the same family.
8. If we are not able to incorporate continuity in this rapid transition, it will ultimately lead to chaos,
anarchy and complete destruction. We have to implement the Laws of Allah Almighty in order
to put continuity in the society.

9. Transition is always not very rapid. In some cases transition is very slow and people don’t even
recognize that change has taken place.

2. Pakistani Society is a Heterogeneous society:

1) The members of Pakistani society are from different and diverse descents, cultural and ethnic
groups having different cultures, traditions and even the different languages. There are about 70
different languages spoken across the country.
2) These people do not come up to the modern definition of nation. These people have nothing
common but Islam that binds the peoples. But the binding force weakened with the passing of
time due to the issues of Provincialism, Racisms and other such ethnic and linguistic issues.
3) Apart from Islam, language is the second binding force between the people e. Urdu being the
National Language of Pakistan holds its people together. In order to get rid of all the major issues
regarding provincialism, racism, we have to make the first binding force strong i.e. we have to
implements the principles of Quran and Sunnah in their spirit. We have to promote Urdu as the
National Language.
4) Our society has got the potential to change the circumstances. There are excellent examples of
this scenario like Earth Quake of October 8th, Independence of judiciary issues. On the other
hand we have to educate our people for this because changes always come through individuals
not the through the Ruling Elite.
