Why Do They Do That? : One child stands on his head, another
eats like a dog. Don't worry--they're fine.
February 24, 1993|PAMELA WARRICK | TIMES STAFF WRITER

- This article is about how young children tend behave strangely and adults
are afraid that this will linger on to adulthood. There are kids that wash
their hand too frequently and others dont want to wear clothes. In class
we have learned that children grow out of their behaviors by watching
others around them. They are experimenting and it is a part of their
development. Though there are probably some behaviors that can lead to
adulthood but some are reversible.
- For example the little boy that is constantly washing his hands could lead
to an anxiety disorder, which could include Attention Deficit Disorder.
But a few of the examples that were discussed in this article could easily
be changed.

How Music May Make Babies Team
Players
By NICHOLAS BAKALAR JUNE 30, 2014 10:58 AM
July 1, 2014 11:42 am
- This article talks about how babies and young children can listen to music
and it can build their character. They can first start to listen to music
when their ears develop and all through their life music affects them
either positive or negatively.
- It our class we talked about how children are developed mainly by
outside influences. One topic that I remember talking about is nurture. A
child grows based on how its nurtured. If you raise the child listening to
music that is either positive or negative is going to reflect on how the
child thinks and or behaves just like any television show or video game.

Utah study suggests fasting may fight diabetes
Health Mormon practice of fasting may not just prevent disease but slow
or even reverse it once it starts.
BY KIRSTEN STEWART
THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

UPDATED: JUNE 15, 2014 02:23PM
- In this article that I found in the Salt Lake Tribune talks about how fasting
may fight diabetes like stated in the title. There is a lot of research that
has stated that fasting for religious can reduce the risk of diabetes or
heart disease. Through there are some doctors that believe that its not
true. They believe that these diets can be very unhealthy and can cause
issues that are not related to diabetes or heart disease.
- -I have learned about diabetes in our human development class and did
my disease assignment on this illness. I have had several family members
that have been diagnosed with diabetes and I try and learn as much as I
can about this disease just for the future I am well educated.

Key to Detecting Alzheimer's
Early Could Be in the Eye
Sense of Smell Also May Be a Way to Screen
By SHIRLEY WANG
Updated July 13, 2014 8:01 p.m. ET
- Researchers are suggesting that early signs of Alzheimers can be found in
the eye and in the sense of smell. By testing these at a younger age, it
could help predict if the patient is at risk. These tests usually ask
questions about how the patient is functioning and memory tests. With
the sense of smell, patients that are at risk usually have a faint sense of
smell and cannot smell in depth.
- This article is related to our class because we have discussed these
different disease and who is at risk and what are the symptoms. This
disease usually happens to older folks and it can also be genetic.

- In San Francisco, a newborns placenta was carried off for research. These
researchers want to better understand how a child can live inside this
organism that is planted in the mothers uterus. This article talks about
how the placenta is structured and the different functions the placenta
can perform in order to keep the baby alive for nine months.
- In our class we talked about how the mothers body functions in order to
create a baby. We watched the miracle of life video and we watched how
the whole reproduction process from the minute after contraception to
the birth of the child. The child is developed in the placenta and that is
why our class was related to this article.

The Mysterious Tree of a Newborns Life
The Push to Understand the Placenta
By DENISE GRADY JULY 14, 2014
SAN FRANCISCO Minutes after a baby girl was born on a recent morning at
UCSF Medical Center here, her placenta a pulpy blob of an organ that is
usually thrown away was packed up and carried off like treasure through a
maze of corridors to the laboratory of Susan Fisher, a professor of obstetrics,
gynecology and reproductive sciences.
There, scientists set upon the tissue with scalpels, forceps and an array of
chemicals to extract its weirdly powerful cells, which storm the uterus like an
invading army and commandeer a womans body for nine months to keep her
fetus alive. The placenta is the life support system for the fetus. A disk of tissue
attached to the uterine lining on one side and to the umbilical cord on the other,
it grows from the embryos cells, not the mothers. It is sometimes called the
afterbirth: It comes out after the baby is born, usually weighing about a pound,
or a sixth of the babys weight.
It provides oxygen, nourishment and waste disposal, doing the job of the
lungs, liver, kidneys and other organs until the fetal ones kick in. If something
goes wrong with the placenta, devastating problems can result, including
miscarriage, stillbirth, prematurity, low birth weight and pre-eclampsia, a
condition that drives up the mothers blood pressure and can kill her and the
fetus. A placenta much smaller or larger than average is often a sign of trouble.
Increasingly, researchers think placental disorders can permanently alter the
health of mother and child.
Given its vital role, shockingly little is known about the placenta. Only

Blue Mind explores the calming effect that water has on
people
In Blue Mind, a marine biologist explores how being close to
the ocean can affect the human brain. (Bigstock)
By Eric Niiler July 28 at 2:52 PM

- This article is about researchers building an understanding on the effect
water has on people. He calls this study the blue mind. This is the
relaxed state that people find themselves in when they are in or
underwater. The reason they are thinking that water has an effect on
people is because it is a relaxation for their lives and it is a shift into
nature.
- I think that this article relates to our class because psychology and human
development deals a lot with the brain and how the brain works. There
are different influences on the brain and the water is just one of the many
affects that influences the brain.

Utah hepatitis C patient gets kidney with same virus
Medicine Doctors say the organ worked
immediately; recipient can expect a long life.
By Kristen Moulton
| The Salt Lake Tribune
First Published Jul 31 2014 05:32 pm Last Updated Jul 31 2014 09:53 pm

- In this article is about a man that has hepatitis C who receives a new
kidney and the donor of that kidney has the same virus. This man has
been receiving kidney dialyses for a few years now and has been on the
organ transplant list for a year now. When the team of doctors found out
that the donor had hepatitis as well they bumped him up to the top of the
list. The transplant was a success and this man is living a healthy life,
dialyses free.
- I think this article relates to our class because it can be a development in
our bodies that has been abused. It is a virus in the liver that can be
spread virally. We have talked about immunizations in our class and I
have remembered getting this immunization because it was very painful.

Patients Got Unapproved Ebola Virus Drug
Two Americans Were Given Medicine in Liberia;
Another Man Tested in New York

By PETER LOFTUS and CAMERON MCWHIRTER
Updated Aug. 5, 2014 7:27 a.m. ET
- This virus has been brought to the United States from Africa. There have
only been two men that have been diagnosed and they are put on
experimental drugs. It is still early in the diagnostics to see if this drug
will work but they are making sure that these Americans will not be
exposed to anyone else. The symptoms are very low but there are several
people the west African countries that break out in a new case every day.
- I think that any sickness has to do with the way humans develop. It could
be slight or something permanent. Though we dont have a lot of
information about this virus, we need to be aware of the development
issues it could have on babies and young children.

Autism begins in the womb, according to a new study
Thursday 27 March 2014 - 8am PST
A new study claims to show for the first time that autism begins in
the womb, while another examines possible environmental
influences on autism development.
- Researchers are coming to a conclusion that autism begins in the womb.
They are saying in this article that genes are a huge factor in the
development of autism. A numerous of environmental factors play a huge
role in autism as well including; changes in diet, mercury poisoning,
vaccines, and a bodies problem with in taking vitamins.
- This article definitely relates to our class because autism was a huge topic
we discussed. A huge factor that we talked about in class was pollution.
There are so many autism children in this world and think that pollution
is a big factor. Though we also talked about how children can grow out of
their autism and fall off

Picking a Nursing Home Shouldnt Be Trial and Error
By JANE E. BRODY AUGUST 4, 2014 12:01 AM
August 4, 2014 11:56 am
- This article is about how elderly people and their relatives take to long to
pick out a nursing home. Family members have the feeling of weakness
and dont want to place their elders in these homes. But in this article it
talks about how the elders just need someone to look after them. A lot of
these patients have dementia and dont even know who is who and what
is what. They just need to have a constant eye on them. I read that family
members should feel like they are being weak and just dropping their
elders off at some gloomy home, they just need someone to make sure
they dont walk into the streets.
- This article fits in perfectly to our recent chapters that we have discussed.
We have talked about the older generations and how their brains dont
work as properly as they once did. Some of these patients just need
someone to look after them and they should be put into a hospice or a
nursing home. After a while they will end up passing on but for the mean
time, they need to be watched. Especially when their brains start to forget
and decay.
