LOCAL BUSINESSES
SUPPORT BOWLING CLUB
Aldinga Bay Bowling Club has joined the many other
local community organisations which are supported
by Aldinga Beach Community Bank, and the Aldinga
Central Shopping Centre.

Representing both the Shopping Centre and the
Bank, Peter Smith recently presented two sponsor-
ship cheques to President John Clissitt, to assist
with the Clubs future development and membership
growth over the coming seasons.

Aldinga Bay Bowling Club, established in 1986, now
boasts two, eight rink grassed bowling greens, and a
small but friendly membership of both men and
women bowlers.

The Club, located in the Aldinga Sports complex on
Port Road, Aldinga is affiliated with the Great South-
ern Bowling Association, and its members regularly
take part in competitions against clubs throughout
the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula.

Members of the ABBC are now encouraging resi-
dents of Aldinga and nearby to Brush off the Winter
Blues and join them at the popular Aldinga Sports
complex to try lawn bowls.

Widely recognised now as an activity for all ages,
lawn bowls can be played simply for fun, or several
competitive choices are available during both sum-
mer and winter seasons.

Recently retired residents are also encouraged to
visit the Club to try the greens, which are open on
Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons, or
they are welcome to simply join the members for a
drink and chat in a casual, friendly club atmosphere.

For those who may be interested to learn how to
play bowls, The Aldinga Bay Bowling Club offers
personal introductory coaching with free bowls avail-
able for use.
The Club is also seeking experienced bowlers to
play in Pennant competitions during the summer.

Commencing at the Club in mid October for the
summer season, is the very popular Night Owls
competition, played on Wednesday evenings from
around 6.30 7.00pm Everyone can play Night
Owls bowls from beginners to regular bowlers, and
once again bowls can be provided for players.

Players can create a team of four friends, family or
workmates, however single players are very wel-
come and will be teamed up with others. Light re-
freshments are available during the evening.

Dear Reader,

That time of year has come again where clubs and
organisations hold their Annual General Meetings. Youll
see several advertised in this issue.
The ABRA AGM is also coming up on August 13
th
, and with
several committee members indicating they will not be
available for re-election, we will have some vacancies.
ABRA, like all organisations, needs some new faces with
new ideas to keep the organisation fresh. We need some
younger representatives to help keep us relevant in the
current era and to be able to represent young people as well
as our older citizens.
The job is not an onerous one with monthly committee
meetings and bi-monthly general meetings involved.
Give it some thought and help your community by coming to
the AGM and nominating to go on the committee.

The Aldinga Bay Christmas Pageant committee is looking
for expressions of interest (see this months cover) from
groups and organisations who would like to be involved by
providing a float, marchers or possibly a stall at the finish
point.
Give it some thought, talk about it in your business or club,
and contact the website or phone number listed.

Welcome back to our second installment in a five
part series giving tips on how we can support our
community to better mental health!

Weathering the anxiety storm..
As with depression, anxiety may be caused by a
combination of life events and personal factors.
Although most people will experience anxiety at
some point in their lives; for example, when sitting
an exam or going for a job interview. Its important
to note that some people are unaware of what
triggers their anxiety.

What to look for?
When an individual experiences anxiety they may
describe it as feeling anxious, stressed, uptight,
nervous, frazzled, worried, tense or hassled.
Although it feels unpleasant, this type of anxiety can
help a person to avoid dangerous situations and
motivate us to resolve problems in our lives.
A panic attack is a distinct episode of high anxiety,
which develops abruptly and may include:
- A pounding heart, or rapid heartbeat
- sweating
- trembling
- shortness of breath
- abdominal distress or nausea
- dizziness, light headedness, feeling faint or
unsteady
- feelings of unreality, or being detached from
oneself, fear of losing control or going crazy.

Next steps...
If you think someone is experiencing a panic attack,
introduce yourself and ask them if they know what is
happening. If they have experienced a panic attack
before, ask them what you can do to help. If
someone doesnt know:
- Remain calm, speak clearly, slowly and in a
reassuring manner, and be patient.
- Reassure the person that they are safe and that
the symptoms will pass.
- Dont belittle their experience.
- Once the attack has passed suggest they speak to
a GP or mental health service to learn more about
anxiety and panic attacks.

Learn how to protect
your local environment

South Australia was once a biodiversity paradise featuring
more than 3500 native plant species, 140 mammal species and
460 bird species.
Due to broadscale native vegetation clearance, up to 98 per
cent of our native bushland has been lost in some areas and
with it, many plant, animal and bird species.
Trees For Lifes Bush For Life Program gives people from all
walks of life the opportunity to help preserve what little we
have left by learning how to restore and protect our States
native vegetation through bush regeneration workshops.
At the workshop, participants will learn:
why the bush needs your help;
the best strategies for restoring ecological processes;
minimal disturbance techniques;
how to work safely in the bush;
how you can get involved as a Bush For Life volunteer
Continuous learning opportunities are also provided through
the program, ensuring participants discover the best techniques
to get native plants regenerating and how to defeat invasive
weeds. Bush For Life also holds advanced workshops which
cover topics such as native plant and grass identification,
advanced bush management techniques, brushcutting and
more.
Volunteers also choose how they want to be involved in the
longer term. They can participate in small group activities
every now and then, adopt a bushland site of their own or join
our Bush Action Team.

At Aldinga Beach C.F.S we regularly hold fundraising
events like sausage sizzles, raffles, entertainment
book sales and also have collection tins at local
business to assist with fundraising.

Now I can hear you ask why do they need to
fundraise? We all pay emergency services levy, so
why the need to fundraise through the sale of
sausages and raffle tickets?

The emergency services levy goes to all emergency
services (C.F.S, S.E.S, and M.F.S) to purchase new
appliances (trucks), to maintain appliances, to
purchase protective uniforms, to basically run an
emergency service.

We at Aldinga Beach C.F.S fundraise so that we
can purchase further equipment to further enhance
our capabilities in our community. Recently we were
able to purchase a HEMA mapping GPS system to
be used in Aldinga Beach 34 appliance, this will
assist us when we go off road to respond to a grass/
bush fire with the latest mapping details, and in the
past we have also purchased specialist stabilization
tools called stab fast used when we are responded
to car accidents, as these items can be very expen-
sive, it takes us a while to raise enough money to be
able to purchase them. Along with these purchases
we must then maintain this extra equipment.

So when you see us out and about selling a sausage
or waving a raffle book stop say hello buy a sausage
have a chat, we are more than happy to talk about
C.F.S.

Without the support and generosity of our local
community fundraising would be impossible so all of
us at the Aldinga Beach C.F.S say Thank you and
hope you can continue on in your support of our fund-
raising efforts

Fluorescent light tubes (this includes Compact
Fluorescent lights now widely being used to replace
incandescent globes) contain mercury.
If disposed of in landfill (through your garbage bin) this
can leach into the soil and water table with disastrous
results.
They should be disposed of properly through recycling.
Do not put them in your rubbish bin. Collection points
are available at Mitre 10 stores and the Willunga
Environment Centre.

Green waste and cardboard / paper - Environmental
Protection Authority (EPA) legislation bans all councils
state wide from sending these materials to landfill.

As of 1 September 2012 computers and televisions will
also be part of this ban. Therefore these materials can no
longer be accepted as part of our hard waste collection.

The collection point is the Southern Waste Resource
Management on Bakewell Road Seaford Rise (the
Council dump off South Road N of the bridge).
There is no cost. All you need to do is take your Ewaste
to the appropriate tip and they will direct you to the
Ewaste section.

You leave your stuff near two containers and exit the tip
depositing the card they issue you with. This card will
take you off their computer.

This can be done any day of the week.

Cinemallunga News Pythons, Pigs and Pirouettes

Our local community cinema, Cinemallunga, is enjoying
a terrific season of movies with the recent sellout showing
of 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail'. Audiences dressed
as knights, kings, peasants and princesses, and were
treated to a mass male choir singing all the Python clas-
sics as a prelude to the main movie.

Similar fun may be expected at the next event with two
movies showing on Saturday August 23rd. The G rated
classic 'Babe' is on at 2pm and is a delightful tale of a
talking pig, suitable for all ages. Music, fun and food can
be expected with dress-ups encouraged.

Big hair and sequins will hopefully be in abundance from
7pm with 'Strictly Ballroom' gracing the screen. As usual,
patrons can enjoy music and fun, a licensed bar, hot food,
prizes and a little optional dancing.
Cinemallunga is based in Willunga's Show Hall. Tickets
are on sale from August 2nd at Aldinga Beach News-
agency, Yummy Nuts McLaren Vale or Tall Poppy Wil-
lunga.

The Get Together Club
A new club has started in Aldinga Beach for adults with a
disability and their families.

The group encourages friendship, fun, connection and
inspiration.

It is the only group of its kind in the southern area.
The first meeting held at the Aldinga Life Care Hall was a
great success, with families sharing a meal, playing
games, and getting to know each other.

A variety of activities are planned for the monthly group
including singing, painting, puppet making, and guest
chefs. Ideas for activities are welcome and encouraged.
The Get Together Club has received a Community Grant
from the City of Onkaparinga and is also supported by
Minda Incorporated, Carer Support and Disability
SA. New members are always welcome.

The Get Together Club is held on the first Friday of each

Childrens Art exhibition and Annual Spring Fair September 5-6

One excellent way to get through the long nights of winter is to
look forward to the season of Spring and the renewal of life energy
everywhere. The students from the Willunga Waldorf School are
working together towards the season of Spring, through their creative
art, to celebrate themes of environment, community, inter-
connectedness, and new life. This is a joint community project of the
Waldorf School and the Willunga Uniting Church, seeking ways to
dialogue, through creative expression, our common values. An
exhibition of the students work will be exhibited at Bethany Hall, and
throughout the church complex from 5 September, followed by our
Spring Fair on Saturday 6 September.
This is an annual project of the Willunga Uniting Church,
making its gallery space open to local schools each year in September
for student art.

Rebecca Hicks, the Art teacher from the Waldorf School describes it
like this:
Our curriculum strives to awaken social responsibility and service
to the community and much of what we do as a matter of course seems
to comfortably align with the messages within Psalms
104 and 138. From Kindergarten onward, an intrinsic love of nature
is combined with a hands-on approach, followed in later years by a
scientifically based understanding of natural processes and active
care for the environment. At every level, students learn to live in
partnership and cooperation with the natural world and her cycles,
planting gardens, caring for animals, and learning lessons for meeting
and taking responsibility for the ecological challenges of the future.
We value soul moods through which learning unfolds: wonder, awe,
devotion, gratitude, compassion and trust. The ability to recognise
beauty, to discriminate between right and wrong, to carry out a chosen
course of action, are the qualities consciously cultivated in the school.
Art is a 'humaniser'.it strengthens not only our sense of self, but a
sense of community. The arts are integrated into all aspects of our
curriculum, and extending the arts into the wider community through
this exhibition at Willunga Uniting Church is a wonderful
opportunity and privilege to make and strengthen connections with
each other.
Artwork from all year levels will be represented, however the high
school Art Elective students are working specifically on individual
and collaborative projects in response to Psalms 104 and 138. We
have engaged in conversations around environmental stewardship,
social responsibility, what is at the core of environmental and
social sustainability and pondered questions around what is needed to
live in a compassionate world.
The Waldorf School Exhibition will be hosted by the
Willunga Uniting Church during the month of September, with a
launch date of Friday the fifth.
The Annual Spring Fair occurs the next day also at Bethany
Hall and the adjacent Bell Paddock, home of the historic Bell Tree.
There will be a variety of food and craft stalls, live plant sales,
performances of music composed by the Waldorf students, childrens
games and activities, and much more.
The weekend is a celebration of the spirit of creativity,
community, and the created order, perhaps best expressed through the
eyes of the young.

Dental disease
What is dental disease?
Dental disease is a very serious, yet under-diagnosed condition
that affects many dogs & cats, both young & old. We usually
treat more than half a dozen patients a week for dental disease
its one of the most common problems in pets.

Why is it important?
Dogs and cats with dental disease often show no mouth pain,
even when severe disease is present, so it can be hard to notice
when things are wrong. Treatment of dental disease significantly
improves quality of life by reducing gum pain and bacterial
infection.
The build-up of calculus on teeth leads to gum infection, tooth
root abscesses, tooth loss, or even infections of the liver, heart
and kidneys.

Does your pet have a smelly breath, dribble saliva, chew with a
head tilt or on one side of the mouth, or drop food or show
difficulty chewing harder foods even just one of these
symptoms can indicate dental disease, but like we mentioned
earlier, sometimes nothing is visible. The best thing you can do is
to get your pets teeth checked by a vet this can be done as a
FREE dental check.

How can it be avoided?
Dental scale & polish: This is the only way to remove calculus
entirely and its often the first step to controlling dental
disease. Dental prevention techniques can then be used more
effectively.
Hills t/d dry food: A specially designed diet that utilises
mechanical and enzymatic cleaning to minimise calculus
formation. Highly recommended.
Bones or chews (Nylabones, Greenies): May reduce calculus
build-up if given on a regular basis. Beware of tooth fractures
and of bones breaking into small pieces that can be
swallowed. Intact, round marrow-bones are preferred, which
should still be removed before becoming old or tattered.
Greenies are the safest chew and are proven to slow build-up.
Tooth brushing: Toothbrush or finger-brush with flavoured dog
toothpaste at least once daily. Needs to be introduced slowly
as not all dogs will tolerate this.

CAN YOU MAKE THE GRADE?
Have you watched in awe as the Tour Down Under
cyclists power up the world-famous Old Willunga Hill?
Willunga 100 Wines Hit the Hill is the premier event of
the Willunga175 celebrations and will allow cyclists of
all standards to test their own hill-climbing skills. You
will have the opportunity to challenge yourself in a hill-
climb time trial and to compete for the inaugural Hit the
Hill crown. This exciting event will be held on Sunday 7
September, so save the date!

Take the uphill challenge
Old Willunga Hill Road will be closed for the duration of
the time trials, so you can ride in safety. The 3.2 km bike
hill climb will begin at 9 am in front of the Old Bush Inn
on High Street, featuring a starting gate based on that
used in the Tour de France. Weve decided to adopt the
Tour Down Under "King of the Mountain" finish line at
the top of the hill, approximately 50 metres before the
turn-off onto Range Road, said Willunga175 Chairman,
Graham Ormsby. Riders of all ages and abilities are
invited to have a go at the hill, and everyone who
reaches the finish line will be awarded a certificate of
achievement. We will also crown a Hit the Hill hero for
each of the various age groups.

Ride a Billycart down High Street
Those who prefer something less physically challenging
can register to compete in a revival of the historic
billycart derby on Willunga's High Street. Derby
organisers from the Willunga Business and Tourism
Association and former members of the Willunga Apex
Club will supply the billycarts, built to original
specifications, so that no one rider has an advantage over
others. Travelling down High Street from a starting point
near the Golden Fleece coffee shop, the billycarts will
cross the finish line in front of the Post Office. Only
people aged 14 years or older may take part in the
billycart races, due to insurance restrictions. If you are
interested in participating in the billycart derby, check the
Willunga Gazette each month or monitor the
Willunga175 website where details of how you can be
involved will be announced soon.

Wind down and relax
The day will be capped off a wine and food event
featuring local produce, where all participants and
spectators can relax after a day of fun and achievement.

Setting prisoners free

"Lock 'em up and throw away the key!"

How does that sound for someone who volunteers his
time and efforts in releasing inmates from the states penal
institutions - from their guilt and pain.

Ross is a retired CMF company commander and his com-
passion is clear from his statement that more Australian
returned combat personnel from the Vietnam war have
suicided than were killed by enemy fire.

He now works with prisoners including gang members
and has heard the most shocking stories. Hurt people hurt
people. Many have reached their confinements through
childhood abuse and negativity; "You'll never amount to
anything", "You're hopeless" etc., and then, because they
believe it, make a series of bad decisions.

Ross says it costs more to keep offenders in jail than to
put them up in a top city hotel! The system is limited in
achieving its goal of rehabilitation; but he works with his
team at Kairos Prison Ministries running courses to set
inmates free from their past destructive life patterns, and
to return them to their families equipped with life-tools
for a new direction and hope. They are often effective,
and some join him in the work upon release.

His change of heart from "lock 'em up!" to "set 'em free
spiritually!" came about because of a personal epiphany.
He realised Christ had forgiven him for wilfully break-
ing God's law. So he decided to pass on the same grace to
those who accepted they had done wrong and recognised
their need for spiritual rescue. They are released from
despair to life and hope.

Aldinga Netball Clubthe Sharks are now half way through
the 2014 Winter Season. The Club has been able to field 3
Senior Teams; A, B and C Grade as well as 9 Junior Teams;
Inters 1, 2 and 3, 13s and Under Div 1 and 3, 11s and Under
Divs 1, 2 and 3 and 9 and Under. Each week the teams play
with Club Spirit and great sportsmanship. Our teams are im-
proving every week if not with wins then with personal bests
for the team. Our teams current ladder positions are:
A grade5th, B grade5th, C grade4th, Inters 13rd, In-
ters 2 4th, Inters 36th, 13s Div 14th, 13s Div 35th,
11s Div 13rd, 11s Div 25th and 11s Div 35th.
Our Club is proud to have junior players make the Southern
Hills Netball Association Representative Teams - Kiara Lovatt,
Cheyanne Bryant, Jess Lloyd, Zoe Freeman, Eleanor White,
Emma Harding and Eleanor Moffatt as well as Southern Re-
gional Academy Teams - Jess Frith and India Hamdorf. I be-
lieve this shows the depth of talent we have at Aldinga Netball
Club.

Aldinga Netball Club held its first Net Set Go program this
year and were rewarded by Netball SA and ANZ in holding
South Australias only ANZ Netball Nation Fun Day on 18th
July 2014. This was a fun day aimed at 5 to 10 year olds im-
proving their netball skills in a fun relaxing environment as
well as getting to meet some Thunderbird players. Aldinga
Netball Club will be looking to hold its second Net Set Go
Program in Term 4. Details will be made available to local
schools closer to the date.
Aldinga Netball Club will be holding its Annual Quiz Night on
23 August 2014 at the Aldinga Football Club. Cost $10 per
person so get a table organised for a fun night. Further details
will be posted on the ANC Facebook page.
A reminder that the Summer Social competition will be held
again in 2014 commencing in about October and running until
March 2015. Nomination forms for teams will be out soon.
The Summer competition caters for juniors (mixed competition
in most grades) and seniors mixed and ladies. This is great fun
way to get back into netball or to start. Many players see this
as start to getting their fitness up ready for the winter season.
Others see this as a great way to meet new people and have a
laugh.

Johnathon Waetford, the Director of the
Willunga Farmers Market Choi r
(Soulfood), an experienced musician with
a beautiful voice, continues to expand the
repertoire of the a capella singing of the
group for the enjoyment of a large
audience from markets, the McLaren Vale
Festival, the Eco Village celebrations to the
Gala performance at STARS .
The female choir sings about food, wine,
love, people and places and the seasons.
The choir meets at Waverley Homestead,
