ummertime and the living is easy. That may be the case but, to be honest, sitting here in our
offices in Kentish Town, I havent seen any fish jumping and the cottons only high when I climb
on the table in my M&S shirt to try and turn on the air conditioning. There is, of course, a far
easier way to chill out and thats by reading this months issue of Pulse. Packed full of fabulous

Turn your outdoors into
another room where you can
relax and entertain. Gabrielle
Fagan finds out how to create
the perfect space with the
latest fabulous furniture
f ever there was a time to
make the most of your
outdoor space, its this
year.
Tight budgets and the
threat of viruses, as well as
a growing reluctance to stamp a
carbon footprint all over the
globe, will almost certainly result
in more of us enjoying time in
our own gardens this summer.
Fortunately, the choice of
garden furniture and accessories
has never been better, and theres
no longer any need to settle for
uncomfortable, wobbly seats or a
conventional dining set.
Liz Murphy, associate editor of
House Beautiful, says: Once the
domain only of the keen
gardener, our gardens have
become extensions of our homes.
Most of us rush to sit outside at
the first glimpse of spring
sunshine, and we want our gardens
to feel as comfortable as our living
rooms, equipped with everything
from sofas to coffee tables.
I
CREATE THE PERFECT
PATIO THIS SUMMER

jewishnews.co.uk 13
Open-plan kitchens opening on
to decks and patios is an
established trend, she points out,
and this creates the need for the
view from the back of the house
to look as good as the front.
Rather than grabbing the first
sunlounger or patio set you see,
she advises that when planning a
room outdoors, you start from the
same basic point as you would
when creating an indoors room.
Liz says: Decide what you want
the room to do, and how much
light it gets. If you want an
outside dining area and your
gardens in full sun over
lunchtime, make sure to include
lots of shade.
In the short term, this may be
an awning or huge parasol, but a
longer term solution could be an
arbour which, if you plant
climbing vines to cover it, it will
look gorgeous and give far more
shade
than an
umbrella.
New
materials such as
weather-resistant rattan have
banished the chore of rushing
around covering up furniture at
the first sign of a shower, or the
need to store it.
If your priority is to lounge,
rather than eat, Liz suggests
opting for comfy living room-style
furniture like large, squashy sun
loungers or a corner unit.
Dont neglect all-important
finishing touches like lighting,
she urges, adding: Solar-powered
ground and fairy lights will
gradually begin to twinkle as
darkness falls, creating a soft
glow to eat by.
Use lamps, lanterns and
candles to highlight particular
features in your garden, such as a
beautiful tree, bush, or
pretty seating area.
Add scented candles to
fill the air with
fragrance.
Spruce up your
patio by choosing from
this selection of some
of the best outdoor
furniture and
accessories.
COUNTRY COTTAGE

prettiness of a country cottage

DECADENT ZONE

when decked out with a cream
canopy (250) and cushions (350),
is a winner. Its 999 as a set from

Whatever you drive normally, when it
comes to your wedding, youll want to
be chauffered around in a smart set of
wheels. Brian Saunders, proprietor of
Brisan Carriages, steers us in the right
direction for choosing the right car
risan Carriages was
established in 1996,
and since then the
fleet has expanded to
almost 30 vehicles.
Based in Cuffley,
EN6, its area of operation covers
Hertfordshire, Essex, Middlesex
and most London postal
districts.
The range of professionally
chauffeured, high quality
vintage, classic and modern
Rolls Royce and Bentley
wedding cars, supported by
colour co-ordinated Daimler and
Mercedes seven-passenger
limousines, can meet
everybodys taste and budget.
The vast majority of the cars are
garaged in Cuffley, in a well-lit
building, where it is strongly
recommended that clients view
them either in the daytime or
evening by appointment, before
booking the cars.
Ive just got engaged and want to
book a car for my wedding how
do I know which one to go for?
Brian says: The wedding cars and
their chauffeurs play an integral
and important role on your
special day and should be
considered as more than just
transport.
There are many chauffeur-
driven car hire businesses
operating in the wedding sector
but it is important to select those
companies that have an in-depth
knowledge of the requirements
and traditions of the Jewish
market which vary quite
considerably from the many
other types of religious and civil
ceremonies.
There are many different types
of bridal cars available but the
most popular choice for Jewish
couples are Rolls Royce and
Bentley models from which you
can choose vintage (mainly

1930s), classic (late 1940s to
1970s) or modern (1980s to
current). You can choose a car
which caters perfectly to the
bride and grooms tastes.
If the wedding is to take place
during the hot summer months
and the journey to the place of
ceremony is to take
approximately 45 minutes or
more, then a car with air-
conditioning may be high on the
brides list of requirements.
By definition a late classic or
modern car is recommended
where air-conditioning systems
were fitted as standard.
Invariably the later cars do not
have the character of the vintage
and early classic models and so
the external appearance and
character of the car may be
higher on the agenda than the
comfort of a modern AC system.
It should be borne in mind,
however, that most of the vintage
and classic cars have an airflow
system and also, as they travel at
modest speeds, a partial opening
of the windows will ensure
comfort without risk to the
brides hairdo.
Interior space is also an issue
and although there is adequate
space in all models, a bride who
wants maximum room and
comfort should choose a vintage,
long wheel base or limousine
model.
Should I book one car or two
what does it depend on?
Brian says: Support vehicles to
the main wedding car (mainly
for the bridesmaids and the
grooms party) are normally
Daimler or Mercedes limousines
that can carry up to seven
passengers. It is recommended
that you choose a company that
can provide support vehicles in
the same livery as the main
wedding car for greater effect on
the day.
The majority of Jewish
weddings follow the tradition
where the bride travels in the
main wedding car to the
ceremony, with both her mother
and the mother of the groom,
and the brides father travels
with the grooms party. It is
common, therefore, to use one of
the support vehicles to carry out
the transfer between both pick-
up addresses. This service is
normally provided in the
standard price of the car or for a
very small nominal charge which
reflects the time and distance
involved.
What is your most popular car
and why do you think this is?
Brian says: The most popular
main wedding car is the Rolls
Royce Silver Cloud.
I have three white Silver Cloud
111s pure white, porcelain
white and acrylic white (the
creamiest of the whites) and a
Silver Cloud 11 in black over
ivory. This car is a rare long-
wheel base model.
These cars date from the early
to mid 1960s and are, arguably,
the most elegant of the classic
cars combining space and
comfort as well as charm and
character. In the photographs
they look fantastic outside any
type of venue.
The Silver Clouds are always
supported by colour matching
Daimler Limousines which
compliment them perfectly.
Close behind the Silver Clouds
are the 1930s vintage Rolls
Royces which are absolutely
stunning. Despite their age we
are happy to drive them the
same distances as the other cars
including into central London.
What is the standard number of
hours a car can be booked for
and are there any extras
included in the price?
Brian says: The tariff is based on
a three-hour hire time with
additional time over and above
three hours chargeable at 50
per vehicle per hour; although if
there are several cars required a
package price is normally given.
The timing of the arrival at the
first pick-up address and time
allowed for the individual
movements of the cars is key to
an efficient operation on the day.
As a general rule, the groom and
his party should arrive at the
synagogue 45 minutes before the
ceremony for photographs,
prayers etc and the bride 15
minutes before to allow for the
bedeken - but depending on the
different requirements on the
day this may vary.
The time allowed for each
journey should be generous to
allow for possible hold-ups.
Travelling into central London on
a Sunday is a slow process. It is
always easier to park up and kill
time if necessary rather than try
to make it up.
I want a car that will stand out
from the crowd what do you
suggest?
Brian says: I believe that the cars
that really catch the eye are the
cars at the extreme ends of the
time spectrum.
The 1930 vintage cars are
spectacular and always receive
admiration from all who see
them.
However, I now have a new
Rolls Royce Phantom in the range
which is equally spectacular for
different reasons and has proved
to be extremely popular.
I have quite a low budget what
is your recommendation for a
credit crunch friendly car?
Brian says: The Rolls Royce
Silver Shadow is at the bottom
end of the price range. It is,
however, a beautiful classic
white Rolls Royce from the
1970s with all the refinements
of a modern car including air
conditioning. It is an ideal main
bridal car which can be
supported, if necessary, with a
seven-passenger classic
Mercedes or Daimler Limousine.

DONT FORGET...
1) To decide what your priorities are
(i.e air conditioning), which will also
include the budget allowed normally
determined by the grooms side.
2) To arrange who is to travel with the
bride to the ceremony, to allow time
for a transfer between the grooms and
brides addresses if necessary.
3) To plan a detailed timetable so that
there is a margin for error in the travel
times. The wedding car operator
should be involved to help with this.
4) To book an appropriate number of
cars with the seating capacity required
to carry out the job efficiently and
comfortably.
5) It is recommended that you use a
company that can provide matching
cars for greater visual effect.

ith so any
restaurants to
choose from
nowadays, one
starts to wonder
whether weve
really gained anything in culinary
terms? Too many chefs seem to take
wonderful fresh ingredients and
then seem to do their utmost to
disguise the flavours.
Take steak, for example. So often
just mediocre meat served to the
masses rather than a charcoal-
cooked quality cut that comes from
a speciality kitchen.
I was therefore happy to come
across Goodman a proper
American steakhouse, which was
just what the doctor (or so I told
myself) ordered after a long, hard
day at the park. Named after Jewish
jazz legend Benny Goodman, the
moment I stepped into this Mayfair
establishment, I truly felt that Id
entered a little slice of the States.
The interior as a whole is
impressive brown is the
dominant colour, and teamed with
clever lighting and wooden floors,
Goodman exudes the aura of an era
long gone. Indeed, it felt as if Benny
himself might burst in at any
moment.
Rest assured, he didnt. What did
show up though was great food. For
starters, I tucked into the organic
salmon carpaccio with tomato
seeds, passion fruit and sea salt,
which was light but nontheless
packed with flavour the passion
fruit was a great twist that elevated
the dish. My dining partner went
for a more classic choice of sliced
tomato, crumbled stilton, red
onion and aged balsamic vinegar
which proved just as good in
quality, freshness and taste.
Mains though were the real
reason for coming to Goodman,
and we were spoilt for choice. The
steaks are cooked to order in a
special charcoal oven, and the
sweet smell of the choice cuts
filled the restaurant.
We knew we were in for a treat.
My Goodman rib eye was so
delicious, I nearly cried. Four
hundred grams of USDA prime
beef, 120 days grain fed providing
the perfect flavoursome and juicy
cut, and complemented to a tee by
the pepper sauce I chose as an
accompaniment.
My partner, meanwhile, opted
for the delicious fillet, which
comprised 250g from UK grass-fed
Angus cattle. Again, a perfect cut, it
simply melted in the mouth. He
also opted for a divine mushroom
sauce and hand cut chips crispy
yet light, just as the ideal chip
should be.
We were fit to burst so took a
good while before ordering desserts
but we were not disappointed once
they arrived: my warm chocolate
fondant with vanilla bean ice-
cream was scrumptious as I cut
through the fondant, the chocolate
centre melted out on to the place
and merged with the ice-cream to
create the most amazing mixture
of taste, texture and temperature.
My partner was delighted with his
baked vanilla cheesecake which
came with a berry compote, which

It is easy to see why Goodman is
such a success: excellent service,
great decor, a classic American
theme, a central location and, lets
not forget, quality ingredients
cooked to perfection the ultimate
recipe for restaurant success.
