How Punjab Manages To Better Its Rice Yield Every
Year Despite Drought
Aug 05, 2014
It may sound far-fetched, but when it comes to rice production, Punjab is the rock star state of India. Come
flood or drought, the north Indian state ensures that its rice production does not fall. Even when over one lakh
of its underground borewells went dry this summer and as the rest of India is recording fall in paddy production,
Punjab is all set to better its previous production figures. The statistics speak the truth. In 1979-80 rice season it
was 30.52 lakh tonne; In 1982-83, 41.56 lakh tonne and 2002-03, it was 30.52 lakh tonne. In the current kharif
season, it is expected to be 110 lakh tonne of paddy despite a poor and late monsoon compared to last year. The
winning mantra is the proactiveness of the farmers who spend from their pocket to arrange of water supply even
where the government could not. Instead of expecting help from the government or other quarters, they put the
shoulder to wheel to cope with water woes.

Cambodia Rice Exporters Hope to Clinch
Philippines Rice Import Deal
Aug 05, 2014

Cambodian rice exporters are keen on winning the Philippines
government's latest rice import tender for 500,000 tons of 25%
broken white rice slated for August 27, 2014, according to local
sources. The South-East Asian nation could not join the
Philippines bid for 800,000 tons of 5% broken white rice in
March 2014 due to a shortage of able exporters, the Chairman
and Director-General of a Cambodian state-owned milled-rice
exporter was quoted as saying. He noted that the newly-
founded Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF) is working towards
clinching the Philippines deal. He however told local sources
that they cannot quote too low prices unlike Vietnam as their
transportation and shipping costs are quite high. He added that
the exporters are expecting the CRF to do something on this
front.Other exporters are also garnering stocks to meet the
Philippines criteria and ensure uninterrupted supply of rice, in case they win the bid.Cambodia exported around
177,928 tons of rice in January - June 2014, up about 1% from around 175,959 tons exported during the same
period in 2013, according to the Secretariat One Window Service (SOWS-REF) under the Ministry of Trade.
USDA estimates Cambodia to export around 1 million tons of rice in 2014, including both official and
unofficial exports to Vietnam.

New Coffee Drinks Go against the Grain
Aug 05, 2014
Looking for a way to jazz up your morning coffee routine? A caf in New York City has just the thing. Caff
Bene, a Korean-based caf chain, features drinks with a twist: you can get grains like quinoa, oats, barley, or
rice blended into your beverage. This isnt just a gimmick these drinks are both delicious and nutritious, full of
good-for-you stuff like omega-3s, fatty acids, selenium, protein, fiber, and more. And several of the grains have
the unique feature of plumping up or absorbing liquid when soaked, which facilitates hydration chia seeds,
flax seeds, and rice, for example. The high-fiber, high-protein grains have the added benefit of filling you up
without empty calories. Caff Benes special is a Five-Grain Latte full of rice, barley, and black sesame seed,
packing a punch of magnesium, calcium, and antioxidants.

Still skeptical? The co-founder of the company says drinkable snack[s] [are] easier for your body to process
than, say, a granola bar. And apparently, they dont taste too bad. The manager says that people are often
initially repulsed by the idea of blended grains in their coffee, but pleasantly surprised when they actually
sample the goods.
This may be a new fad for Americans (theres also a Caff Bene in Los Angeles, California), but the idea comes
from a centuries-old South Korean powder called misugaru. Misugaru is traditionally made with white, brown,
and black rice, barley, sesame seeds, corn, millet, and several varieties of beans that are ground, roasted,
steamed, and combined to make a powder. South Koreans mix it with coffee and milk for an instant breakfast,
or add bananas, cinnamon, and milk to create a smoothie. Caff Bene features items like a misugaru latte or
misugaru frappe, distinguishing it from its typical American counterparts and giving South Koreans a little taste
of home away from home.

USDA Post Estimates India MY 2013-14 Rice
Exports to Decline to 10 Million Tons, Down 8%
from Last Year
Aug 05, 2014

The USDA Post has estimated India's rice exports to decline to around 10 million tons in MY 2013-14 (October
- September), down at about 8% from around 10.869 million tons in MY 2012-13. However it estimates India's
exports to further decline by about 20% to 8 million tons in MY 2014-15 due to significant reduction in
production and tight supplies.
The Post estimates India's MY 2013-14 milled rice production at around 106.29 million tons, up about 1% from
around 105.24 million tons in MY 2012-13. In MY 2014-15, the Post is estimating India's rice production to
decline by about 6% to around 99.5 million tons due to a reduction in planting area. The USDA Post is
estimating paddy planting area to decline to around 42.7 million hectares in MY 2014-15, down about 3% from
an estimated 43.94 million hectares in My 2013-14.
Delayed monsoon rains in 2014 (June through mid-July) have significantly impacted the MY 2014-15 kharif
rice planting but the pace of planting has revived after monsoon gained strength in the second fortnight of July.

However, if monsoon rains weaken over the next two weeks in southern peninsula, rice planting in Andhra
Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, where transplanting continues through early September, is likely to be affected.
Continued rains throughout August and September is important for achieving normal yields. September and
October rainfall is also critical for replenishing the reservoirs and ground water required for irrigation during the
planting of rabi rice crop. The Post is expecting a clear picture of India's rice production by the end of August
when the monsoon and soil moisture can be better assessed.India average wholesale rice prices increased
sharply in July 2014 due to poor monsoons and expected decline in rice production from the kharif (June -
December) main rice crop, according to official sources
