If We arent Changing the Climate, then Who is?

Billy Lin
What is Climate Change?
!
Life on earth is possible because of the sun and the
delicate atmosphere that surrounds our earth.
!
Our atmosphere traps the heat we need to survive.
!
The most important gas in our atmosphere is CO2,
Carbon Dioxide.
So Whats the
Problem?
!
Our burning of fossil fuels and
our conversion of land for
housing and agriculture has
released unprecedented
amounts of Carbon Dioxide
into the atmosphere.
!
The Carbon Dioxide has
trapped too much heat in our
atmosphere, which is making
our world heat up.
Smokestack emitting unimaginable amounts of carbon into atmosphere
How does Climate
Change affect us?
A warmer world could result in
many negative e#ects.
Drought
Drought is one of the e#ects of climate
change. Warmer weather could dry up
water deposits and interfere with farms,
food rations, and cause dehydration and
starvation.
Melting Glaciers
!
Just a few degrees of
increased temperature can
cause glaciers to melt,
damaging the ecosystem
greatly.
!
Polar Bears and other arctic
animals lose their habitats and
be unable to access their
hunting grounds.
Polar Bear habitats are fragmented
Freak Weather Events
Climate change may cause abnormal, extremely destructive
storms that wreak havoc across entire states or provinces.
A large thunderstorm forms quickly and wreaks havoc on community
Forest Fires
!
Forest res are also caused by
global warming.
!
Increased temperatures make
ames easier to ignite.
!
Forest res destroy homes,
ecosystems, and add more
carbon dioxide to the
atmosphere.
Forest Fires in Colorado are deadly and unstoppable
Flooding
!
Flooding is the result of glaciers melting.
!
The seawater is contaminated, and may contaminate a
citys water supply.
!
This may result in the spread of disease.
Floodwater makes it difcult for people to move around.
Smog
Smog is caused by intensive coal
burning in the city. It may cause similar
e#ects as smoking to the lungs, as it
contains many articial chemicals and
substances.
Large amounts of smog obscure what looks like to be a beautiful city
The Million Dollar Question: Are we causing climate
change?

Or is nature causing climate change?
Natural Causes of Climate Change
Natural Processes are
Not Many
Volcanoes can release carbon dioxide
into the atmosphere, but only rarely.
Volcanoes do not erupt very often!
Many say that our own sun is causing climate change. It is,
but it is in fact supposed to be causing Earth to cool down.
The amount of solar
activity is actually
decreasing, which
should in theory make
Earths temperature
increase.
Strangely, this isnt the
case. Earths
temperature seems to
be steadily rising every
year. This means that
the Sun is not what is
causing our temperature
to rise.
Ocean Currents and
Continental Drift
Some argue that ocean currents and
continental drift also cause climate change.
However, the amount of temperature increase
is unlikely to be high.
Natural Processes Conclusions
!
Of all the evidence that natural processes create climate
change, the only reasonable one is Volcanic Eruptions.
However, eruptions do not release a ton of carbon or
nitrogen into the air; it only happens once in a while and
is dwarfed by what we put into the atmosphere.
Man-Made Causes of Climate Change
Its not them, its us.
Our machines are capable of
emitting large amounts of carbon
dioxide into the atmosphere.
Fossil Fuel Emissions
The burning of fossil fuel for energy releases a huge amount
of carbon into our atmosphere. This graph shows that
Motorized
Transportation
The increasing need for transportation
over a large area requires the use of
vehicles. Vehicles emit large amounts
of carbon into the atmosphere.
Deforestation
We need more land for factories
and living quarters. Cutting down
trees, we remove one of the natural
absorbers of carbon. This can
increase the amount of carbon in
the atmosphere and also decrease
the amount of clean air we breathe.
Agriculture
The clearing of land for agriculture
increases the amount of methane and
carbon in the air as waste products of
various animals tend to waft up into the
atmosphere, further trapping in heat.
Use of Fertilizers
!
Fertilizers contain inordinate
amounts of nitrogen, which is,
although vital for the growth of
various plants, eventually taken
up the the atmosphere. This
may induce acid rain and
damage many ecosystems.
Human Processes Conclusion
!
Humans have indubitably caused this planet to heat up
exponentially through our use of fossil fuel as an energy
source and our decisions for transportation.
!
Our use of coal and other fossil fuels have heated up our
homes, but have also heated up outside.
!
Our use of land causing deforestation has caused a rise
in carbon dioxide levels in the sky.
!
We need to stop this destructive behaviour.
The Trillion Dollar Question: How do we stop climate change?
We have to save the planet that we
were given responsibility for.
It is our world, and we need to take care of it.
Transportation
We can ride bikes or take transit
as those are all greener
alternatives to driving to work.
Energy Use
!
By reducing the energy we use
we can also reduce the amount
of fossil fuel needed to be
burned, therefore reducing the
amount of carbon emissions.
Three rs, all reduce.
Consume Responsibly
Do not over consume, especially on meat
products. The grazing of these animals
usually cause a lot of carbon emissions
with their waste.
We can all make a
difference.
We can all care for the world
that we have been given.
Not only that, we should.
