ABSTRACT
When the transformer is energized, the transient inrush of magnetizing current flowing
into the transformer may be as great as 10 times the full load current and it decays
relatively slowly. Hence it becomes difficult to distinguish between fault current and
inrush current. It is here that the harmonic restraint differential relay comes into the
picture.
It is to be noted that the harmonic content of the inrush magnetizing current is much
greater than that of the fault current. The harmonic restraint differential relay works on this
principle. The relay is adjusted not to operate when the harmonic current exceeds 15% to
20% of fundamental current hence facilitating the charging of the transformer.
