is dedicated to birth of grandchild Yarema

The protracted one of first economic recession in Europe that passed modern economic
experts out of eyeshot. Recession begins in the agrarian states. The capitalist relations in
France, Germany, Britain and Austria - Hungary develop by very slow rates. The accepted laws
about requisition of earths for debts result in mass emigration in Ireland. In this period from
Europe also there was emigration, but she yet did not gained such mass character from time of
big Asiatic migration of peoples. A New World passes to new rates of development of capital.
Large capital building, industry begins in the United States; an economy needs a plenty of
hands. The economy of Canada in large part relies on British Crown develops by some more
slow rates. A 1906 year was approached, year of the first mass emigration on the American
continent. Galicia on this time was component the Austria - Hungary empire. The geographical
location gave the imprint on economic relations and development of industry.
Boykiland is part of Galicia. It is the ethnic-cultural group of Ukrainian-rousin peoples, which
in sort yet itself to the large Ukrainian peoples. If somebody asked boykiman who he is, heard
in reply - rousin. On Ukrainian spaces of union in sole peoples happened after disintegration of
pedigree social way of life and union of tribes of rousichiv, poulyan, louzan, drevlyan, siveryan,
oulichiv, tivertsiv; the names is result from the names of localities. Unlike the mountain
population Ukrainians often named itself podolyanami that lived in the low-laying areas of
middle Dnestr. Boykis compact live in Overhead - Dnestr’s Bescid. The historian and
ethnographers-researchers to this time cannot account for the name boyki and from it
resembles. Interesting there is in local names the names with old Ukrainian pronunciation
sometimes there are successively the accordant стр-, стрв-. Such pronunciation to this time
remained at Croats which disobeyed to Svyatoslav - conqueror and passed through
Carpathians in other lands.
On beginning of 1900-years the residence in Carpathian Mountains was represented on the
economic life of boykis. Weak development of forestry, poor agricultural earths, not developed
trades, only the cattle breeding on small mountain fields leads that boykis do not own the
considerable material states. In 1906 large emigration touches Galicia. Big and small groups of
boykis, many families begin to emigrate from Austria - Hungary on earnings.
Boyki’s houses was the frame from the wood dried up, is sometimes covered by tree-board,

low-laying areas nearer the rivers and mountain streams. They worked on the fields in low-
laying areas, the cattle walked on meadows. To lead large herds there was no possibility a
forest covered all mountains. Ivan Kapral with sons Grygori, Nick the brothers Vasyl’ and Ilko
ride to America on earnings. At a home there was a wife Anastasiya with a son Ivan; Ivan was
near ten years.

A village Large Soushitsya is stretched out along a mountain stream right influx of river
Strv’yag between two leas of Carpathians spines on eight kilometres and a word Large is
adopted. Peasants mainly rear rye, wheat and oat for cattle. On Carpathian earths the harvests

Through Austria, Switzerland, almost all Europe to ports of Germany, Holland, traveled to the
United States. United States to this time named America. Family Kachmarek, Kapral, Kravets’,
Fornal’, Tretyak, Shandrovich drives out to Cleveland, mainly men. In the north states were built
and came alive the cities Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland. The gradual getting up of new capitalist
relations begins; United States necessary strong hands. Most people, earning some sum,
return home. In Europe the protracted recession results in the decision of First World War. Not
managing to decided the economic problems in war many countries of Europe: Britain, France,
Germany, Italy, Austria and Russia. The small countries not having military power and become
the victims of imperial militaristic ambitions.
The second wave of emigration was on 1911 – 1913 years. Because war part of people does
not returned home. In the United States there was Grygory and Mykola the sons of Ivan, Ivan’s
brothers Vasyliy and Illya. Illya is married with Rosalia Fornal, Grigoriy gets married in the
United States and all of them lived in Cleveland.
In Galicia to the Austrian army a lot of young adult boys are taken away. Ivan Kapral son
Ivan and from a village Lyatsko now Solyanovatka Mihaylo Vozny son Semen was taken away.
Ivan was adopted in sanitary part hospital-train that transported wound-mans from Italian front
to Striy, Kolomyia and other Galician cities. Mihaylo was taken away in parts of gunners on
western front and between Alps in a valley Po gets in rounding. Mihaylo on two years in
captivity to Italians. The First World War ended Brest union and Versailles agreement. Austrian
empire disintegrated, in Europe new countries get up. Schooled by fights Galician warriors get
organized in Sichovi Shooters and Ukrainian Galician Army. Ivan Kapral goes to Sichovi
Shichovi. For Ukraine not long to militate, near Striy Sichovi Shooters was defeated.
Poland becomes on the obstacle of Ukrainian independence, France sends an army Geller
to strangle Galicia. Russia in any way cannot satisfy the imperial ambitions, on proclamation of
free Ukraine sends to Kiev the masses of killers under the command Moravyov. Galicia gets on
ten years, to determination, under Polish “pacifications”.
Italy organizes camps from captive Galician warriors on the coast of Adriatic, dresses, old
warriors spoke – gives a full-dress uniform. And them somewhere near one hundred thousand
ready to ride by ships to Ukraine, already the ships stood on a raid. All countries return to home
the captive, nobody to return away Galician. Polish ambassadors become on the obstacle of
organization the Ukrainian army, for one night of all disarm and send on Italy on works. Mihaylo
Vozny with a comrade is “sold” in slavery to Sicily on two years, where he from a reed does
baskets for an owner. Owner sold baskets at the market of Italy. On my question:
– grandfather, how there was in captivity in Italy?
A grandfather Mihaylo smiled, speaking:
– so as on a resort.
Hostess of the Italian businessman producer of baskets for agricultural necessities was
found in the foot of Etna on Sicily. A reed was collected, pricked on four parts and braided
baskets. Worked in the morning and after dinner, in the daytime timeout because there was a
large heat. An owner fed and dressed, except for a meal on a day gave the liter of wine and two
keel of orange.
A grandfather Mihaylo told:
– to us was barely sufficient and in the first night we climbed to the owner in a garden bitter
orange and overheated. An owner after has laughed some days. Did not do on Sunday we
went to the church.
Grandfather thought a bit and spoke:
– once we climbed on Etna. We looked, looked it and decided to look what it are a smoke. We
went on Sunday early when no work and somewhere under evening climbed under a top. But
not was to go because sulphur stank strongly. Came back in night because was already darkly
and long road while found an owner house.

 At that owner Mihaylo with a comrade worked two years and on a foot through all Italy almost
all Europe came home. In Yugoslavia signed to rear tomatoes begin to work a bit some money.
Learned to rear tomatoes in hotbeds.

About development a Galicia, Poland along ten years of occupation gave nothing neither
progress in industry, nor in cultural development because professing the interests chauvinisms.
A village developed after the slow economic laws, the same natural economy, the rests of
agricultural product go to the exchange.

A similar house built by Semen Vozny stood to the end 60th years.

 A picturesque village Solyanovatka (old name Lyatsco) was stretched out on the Near-
Carpathian hillocks of salt-stone landscape. The houses built in low-laying areas and sink
oneself in gardens. Climate more soft knife in the Carpathians region. To Boykiland give a
hand, after a mountain is Dobromyl and to Peremyshl’ not far. Peasants mainly follow the
plough. Near-by Salina salt mines are opened, where obtained and boiled down salt. In Semen
Vozny earth, bow and some forest. All passed to the inheritance Mihaylo. On part of meadows
were water-field passed to the forest. A forest was bad; mainly alders firewood and changed on
build material.
The house of Semen Vozny was built in traditional style: one half – it is housing rooms,
kitchen, barn, the second half – economic apartment under one thatch roof. At a home five
children, three sons, two daughters. In twenty nine Mihaylo gets married with Katherine Kit.
Fedir and Hanna Kit there are five daughters. Maria marries for Ivan Lazar, in what two
children: Bogdan, Dariya and brother-in-law Vasiliy; all neighbors named them Debretski. One
daughter goes in a greek-catholic monastery. The second daughter married with a Croat or
Serbian and traveled to France. Them two sons got citizenship after service in an army. The
youngest daughter Anastasiya married with Pavlo Komnatovski.
Ivan Kapral married with Anna Yedyn. In family of Ivan Yedyn six children: Ivan,

Vasyliy, Anna, Yefrosyniya, Katheryna, Mihaylo. Youngest Mihaylo came from warfront the
patients with typhus and 1919 dies. Dies Anastasiya the second wife Ivan’s. After the second
returning from the United States a great-grandfather Ivan collects the band of builders and rides
in Galicia to build houses. He built complexes in Trouscavets, Morshyn, Synevir. Synevir he
named as by Marine Eye. Great-grandfather told about America to the small grandchildren:
such large houses and when you look at overhead floors a cap falls from a head.

The boykis liked to build houses in traditional style: a high foundation, a room without glass-
window along house, a high roof is protected from frequent Carpathians drizzle rains, the
houses mostly under the thatch roofs.

A grandfather Myhaylo bantered: me married, took old boy for a hand to led to family Kit –
here owners, here you will get married. Vozny was the considerable owner, bullocks, horses,
and cows, much worked on field. Grandfather Myhaylo told: we conveyed a wheat to
Peremyshl’, Dobromyl’, Khyriv and Nove Misto. The bread was so many that it was impossible
to sell. In Croatia and in Serbia learned to rear tomatoes. People spoken – not to eat it is poison

– when the tomatoes conveyed on a market and traded. Ivan Lazar in Polish times rode to
France on earnings, worked in mines to El’zats, Lotaringi. He returned through Switzerland
when Second war began. At transplantation from a train to a train there were many people,
crush and there was a suitcase on a platform:
– in that suitcase nothing was – Ivan told,
– old raincoat and letters from a home. Somewhere through some months a suitcase post
comes to my log cabin. Swisses looked an address on letters and deported it me...
“comounyaky” wanted to build a communism.
Ivan Kapral collected the some moneys and with family moved to Fel’shtyn (now Skelivka) in
October 1935, opened a shop and private job. A ferrous shop was spoken in those times now
speak the metal wares.
On the end of 30th years in Galicia little by little co-operative motion gets organized.
Ukrainians begin to create workplaces; “Native school” and “Education” was financed.

Not easy emigrant life. In 1929 recessions named “large depression” proceed to 1938, begin
in the United States outgrowing a world crisis. Europe “goes to the decision” of problems,
deciding Second World War. Galicia again becomes the “tasty pie” of distributing for east and
west conquerors. Pan-mongolian predominant power takes away all peculiar, those who tries to
offer some resistance to prisons and annihilates, “all your is our” became...

In 1940 a grandfather Ivan with family traveled to Rayhenberg, later Folkenberg and Nayse
in Overhead Silesia and in 1944 to Austria. The “ferrous pool down”. Austria gets in area of

In 1945 army stepped back from Austria through Poland. They requisitioned herds of the
cattle. Family comes on a foot together with cowboys to Peremyshl’ and Felshtyn. In place of
house there was foundation and old linden-tree how the witness of all events is... Volodymyr
Kapral remained in Silesia and got to Shetsin, family finder him more than twenty years. A
great-grandfather Ivan Kapral died in Felshtyn in 1942. A grandfather gets over with family in
Velyka Soushytsya to the relatives, and after to Bouncovychi. He organizes small joiner's work,
spoke trees-busy and marked of windows, doors, modernized a beehive Gerstoung for
Carpathians terms, made beehives, loved an apiary and garden.
1947 - 1949 years. In the native village of grandfather Ivan are roundup and repression. The
people and relatives are taken out to Siberia. Take out who don’t want communist сibouts all
who escapes in a forest to the partisans, who carries to them to eat – whole families. For a son
Osyp take out the cousin of my grandmother Vasyl’ Kravets his wife Anastasiya Trytyak,
children Mariya, Hanna, Yaroslava and Stefa. After Moscow-Stalin camps to family ban to be
settled in towns Lviv, Drogobych, more one hundred kilometres from regional centers. In
Siberia Vasiliy studied fitoterapiyo, becomes a folk doctor. In 60th I often helped him to collect
medical plants.

... In 1942 in Dmytriy Vozy, youngest grandfather’s brother, Germans find a hidden old austrian
rifle in a pussy-willow and take him to Osventsim, he disappeared to obscurity...
Great-grandmother repeatedly rode to Osventsim, but did not so obtain his liberation.

Letters came to beginning of 60th from Cleveland, a grandmother Anna was not able to write
in Ukrainian, she knew the Polish, German and old Ukrainian language. We named old
Ukrainian church-language.

Storks always arrive home. In a thunderstorm and weather, rain or snow –

always native.

 Family Podolyanco resembles from cossack births. Cossacks strayed near a river of Vorona
after destroyed a Sich and fascination of cossack liberties. Between small influxes the little
rivers founded a village. It was already darkly, stars shone on sky. Veles rose forth above
heads. This legend is passed from a generation to generation and speaks that as a token of
that and a village Velesnytsya is adopted. To Velesiv and Otyniya some steps.
Mykyta and Kateryna Podolyanco had four children: Olga, Hanna, Roman and Vasyl’. Mykyta
reared pedigree cattle and sold on a market in Kolomyia. In Austria on an exhibition a reared by
him cow occupied one of prize places, a deed is saved. Mykyta was on earnings in Toronto and
on the earned incomes built a house in Velesnytsya.
Hanna married with Myhaylo Bogachenco in Otyniya; Vasyl’ drives out and is settled in
Kherson region; Olga remains on a dad place; Roman got to Lanchyn after an army (served
near Tashkent).

From where came the guzuls ... anybody does not know. But they lived always there.
Once Mihaylo Danylyuk did not come home. After fair he and come friends turned to tavern.
The horses came to a house very lately. Great-grandmother wept whole night. In a morning
proprietor of tavern brought Mihayla to safe and sound and speaks to the great-grandmother:
– hostess, he was wonderful owner...
“Owner” for whole night in a tavern drank away all money... and such wonderful that a
proprietor brought him.
Vasyl’ Berezyuk and Evdokiya Danylyuk lived in Lanchyn. They had two children: older Maria
marries with Roman Podolyanko; young Melaniya marries with Ivan Filyak in Yaremche
(daughter Nadia is a cross mother of Yarema). A grandfather Vasyl’ in Second war was taken
away on warfront, passed with “liberators” to Prague. A flashbacks of grandfather Vasyl’:
– who is ill, two step to ahead...
– I think, I am not ill – from the front adventures told the grandfather,
– I see all the ills from above on tanks to front-rank, for a few waves and smoke goes.
Whom to drink higher norms or not had power on a tank to fell down and a track disappeared.
A grandfather Vasyliy Berezuk worked as a forestry lumberjack in Nadvirna to the pension.
