Story : Lan and Din are Kidnapped

The story that we decided to use to teach is Lan and Din are Kidnapped. We choose
this story because the language level of this story is not too hard or too easy for the pupils to
learn. This story book uses simple sentence and contains simple dialogue. There are also
myriad of activities that can be conducted using this story. The first activity that can be done is
Giving responses/suggestions/advice to the characters of the story. Second activity that can be
done is role play.

Activity 1 : Giving responses/suggestions/advice to the characters of the
story
Procedure:
First, the teacher tells the story. Teacher must first make sure that all pupils understand
the whole story then only the activity can be proceed. After all the pupils understand the story,
the teacher can ask them to give responses to the action of the characters. For example, after
reading Lan and Din are Kidnapped, pupils may respond to the character by writing "I think
both of you are brilliant. You are very smart by using the paper plane to seek for help."
Another activity is to ask pupils to give suggestions or advice to a certain character in the
story to solve a problem or deal with difficulty. For example, after reading Lan and Din are
Kidnapped, pupils may suggest to the characters, "You should not talk loudly or else the
kidnappers will notice."
Besides, teacher also can ask the students what actions that they will take if they are on
the same situation as the characters in the story and being kidnap. Pupils will use their
imagination to solve the problem.

Justification:
The reason for choosing this activity is it can develop pupil critical and creative thinking.
Their response during the activity by solving the problems, making suggestions and comments
on behavior, actions and attitudes of the characters will develop their critical and creative
thinking as they need to think out of box. Besides, this activity also promotes and challenges
pupils to think critically about how to help the characters in the story and to distinguish what is
right from wrong and what can be done within one's power in a certain situation. This will surely
encourage pupils to use their imagination.
Moreover, pupils speaking skills and pronunciation will develop as they need to speak up
and response during this activity. For example, when they respond to the teacher, the will speak
up and this will help the teacher to identify the students proficiency level. If they are weak,
teacher can help by planning something for the future lesson to improve the pupil language.

Activity 2 : Role play of the story
The story can be acted out as :
(1) a radio play which requires only voices (and sound effects)
(2) a puppet show which involves not only voices but the making and controlling of puppets
(3) a real play with or without sets and costumes.
The duration of the play or the whole play can be acted out depending on the time and
resources available, and pupils'/teacher's preferences.
First teacher tells the story to the whole class or give handouts of the story to the pupils.
Before telling the story teacher must choose a suitable way how to tell it and the place must be
conducive and make sure all pupils have the opportunity to listen and understand it. Teacher
also can show some pictures according to the story to help pupils to understand more.
Then teacher can choose whether to use the first, second or third activities. For all the
activities, teacher can act as the facilitator and can assist the pupils if they need help. All the
activities should be plan and conduct by the students according to their creativity.

Justification :
The reason for using this activity is it can develop pupil critical thinking. Besides, it also
can develop the pupil creativity by designing props, sets and sound effects for the play. This
activity also can instill the spirit of cooperation among them because in order to perform a great
play, they need to cooperate and share ideas between each other. This activity will allow the
interaction between classmates, and peers. It also allows introverted students to speak out.
Quieter students get the chance to express themselves in a more forthright way. It helps to
break down cliques.
Moreover, this activity also will improve the pupils confidence level because they have
to act out the story in front of the class. Other than that this role play activity is fun and
motivating. People enjoy playing, especially young people. If pupils are already motivated to
play, learning through play would become even easier. The input by the teacher will be more
easily absorb by them.
The problems of discipline and motivation can also be reduced. Learning is active and
not passive when role-play and simulation are used. They require mental and physical activity
e.g. gesturing to put forward a point. The students have to concentrate in order to participate
effectively. This would leave little room for playing tricks or getting into mischief. In fact such
negative behaviour can be diverted into the role-play and simulation activities, which ironically
can make the situation more interesting. Since the situations in these activities are often related
to real life, the students will see the relevance and they may be more motivated to participate
and to use the target language. Hence, relevance would increase the motivation to learn, which
in turn will increase student involvement, thus reducing discipline problems which often arise
from boredom and lack of motivation
In the aspect of error correction, this role play activity is quite helping. Teacher can
record the role play and students can be given the opportunity to listen to the dialogue again
and reflect on the language they used. They will eventually spot their own mistakes and learn to
improve it.
