Global warming issue no longer sound foreign to any of us.
In fact, it has undoubtedly
gained attention of many as it is very vivid nowadays when we experience and face the intensely dry and extremely scorching weather daily. Hence, it is definitely vital for each n every one of us to identify the root cause of this issue and the whole process on how this phenomena occurs. Greenhouse gases play a major role in the occurrence of this matter. Basically greenhouse gases are the key element in regulating the earths temperature. They work close with the sunlight to keep the earth warm. Believe it or not, they are highly capable to perform this by simply trapping the energy from the sun. First of foremost, what is a greenhouse? A green house is a house made up of glass roof and glass walls. People usually cultivate tomatoes and flowers and other plants in such conservatory. As sunlight sparkles in and warms the plants as well as the air inside, the heat is imprisoned by the glass and fail to escape. So, this contributes to the gradually increasing warmness during the daylight and temperate warmness at night too. The similar concept applies to the earth atmosphere. Gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), and the ozone in the lower atmosphere perform function analogues to the roof of a greenhouse. Therefore they are acknowledged as greenhouse gases. As the sun glosses through the atmosphere, the Earth's surface warms up in the sunlight. On contrary, at night, Earth's surface cools, liberating the heat back into the air. Here comes the role of greenhouse gases whereby they trap some of the heat in the atmosphere. Ultimately, that's what maintains our Earth warm and temperate at 59 degrees Fahrenheit, on average. So, now that we know the basic principle of greenhouse gases and its purpose, it is relevant to go in depth on how the whole process takes place in regulating the flow of energy into and out of the earths atmosphere. Naturally, there is an equilibrium between the energy coming into our atmosphere from the sun and the energy escaping from the earth back into space. The energy that approaches atmosphere is relatively short wavelength ultraviolet radiation (UV) that warms the earth. However as the earth cools, the energy that goes out is as longer wavelength infrared radiation (IR). Some of this infrared radiation is absorbed by the greenhouse gases. These gas particles will then re-emit the IR radiation whereby a percentage of it is directed back toward the earth. Thus, the greenhouse gases catch hold some of the energy that would have otherwise escaped. This trapped energy hence contribute to temperatures on the earth that are higher than they would be with absence of greenhouse gases. Certainly, greenhouse gases serve to be somewhat beneficial and necessary to sustain survival of living things on the earth by regulating the temperature of the earth to provide the best optimum climate. But, do we all realise that these greenhouse gases are also capable to cause detrimental effect to our beloved earth because of our unscrupulous act? Certainly not as we are all rushing to earn tons of money, kicking aside the concern for the environment. Global warming that we face nowadays are due to these greenhouse gases. To explain this further, let me start from the molecular level. Greenhouse gases, for instance, carbon dioxide and methane are also known as infrared active molecules. Once they absorb infrared light, the energy of the light will cause these molecules to vibrate. High concentrations of these vibrating molecules in the gaseous atmosphere provides for energy transfer (kinetic) due to vibrational impact. Since temperature is simply a quantity of kinetic energy in matter, an increase in vibrational energy of gaseous molecules results in an increase in air temperature. The worldwide outcome would then be an increase in measured average ambient temperatures. So, if the proportion of greenhouse gases surge radically in the atmosphere, the greenhouse influence will be too strong and Earth will get warmer and warmer. At the moment, greeneries such as trees and plants with exclusive responsibility of taking in carbon dioxide and giving off oxygen are being chopped and burnt to make more lands for industrial development. Besides that, burning of fossil fuels also occur often and accounts for about 80 percent of greenhouse gas emission. These human activities contribute to the release of carbon dioxide that is proven to play a massive part in global warming. It can stay in the atmosphere for up to hundreds of years after being free and tend to trap more heat and leading to alterations in the Earth's typical weather. In brief, it is important for all us to take the initiative to throw concern about our earth. Being updated with all current issues does not solve anything unless we act as a stepping stone to solving the problem. A simple logic is that any matter that come about starts from a root cause. In this case, we can propose solutions targeted at reducing the high levels of carbon dioxide that contribute to global warming. Together we should work for the betterment of our earth and human race.
