The benefits of a healthy diet are clear and well
documented. In addition to providing the nutrients a
growing body needs, consuming a balanced diet
helps children maintain a healthy weight. Obesity
continues to be a growing problem among school-
aged children and can contribute to the onset of type
2 diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, and many
other adverse medical conditions.
Children attending school will eat at least one meal
away from home each day. A healthy lunch provides
sound nutrition to give students energy to do well in
school and for the rest of the day. Children who do
not eat well at lunch may have difficulty
concentrating, while others may feel sluggish or
tired.
As part of the 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act,
the United States National School Lunch Program
was revised to guarantee healthy, nutritionally
sound choices, as established by the U.S.
Department of Agriculture, for lunch. Americas
school menus were altered to be healthier than ever,
including more fruits and vegetables while limiting
calories. Despite some controversy through the
years, including some students saying the smaller
portions and food choices arent always satisfying,
states suffering from high child obesity rates have
seen marked improvements.
Whether students purchase lunch from school or
bring lunch from home, there are ways to guarantee
a more diverse offering and better nutrition. Here
are some guidelines to follow.
* Offer nutrient-dense foods. Foods should
contribute to the daily recommended amounts of
protein, iron, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C.
Provide a selection of foods, such as lean protein,
whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, that will give
children the nutrients they need. Nutrient-dense
foods also help kids feel fuller, longer.
* Limit fat intake. Avoid foods that do not get their
fat from polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats.
Saturated fats can lead to obesity and clogged
arteries.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. Students
from a Small Business Management
Class at Shepherd University recently
donated $655 to the cancer comfort
fund at University Healthcare Berkeley
Medical Center.
Te money was raised as part of a class
project. Te four students Tifany
Banks, Veronica Price, Trae Yates and
Ashley Bender created a business they
named Sweets for Teats. Tey made
desserts and sold them in Jeferson and
Berkeley Counties.
With an initial goal of $500, the students
were successful in raising $655. Tey
selected the Cancer Comfort Fund at
University Healthcares Regional Cancer
Program as their charity of choice to
receive the proceeds from their business.
Te money will be used to assist breast
cancer patients.

MARTINSBURG Blue Knights Chapter V,
a law enforcement motorcycle club, and Main
Street Martinsburg will once again host Bike
Night this year in Martinsburg on Aug. 16.
Beginning with registration at Berkeley Plaza
at noon, hundreds of area bikers will leave the
plaza at approximately 4 p.m. for a scenic ride
that weaves through Back Creek Valley and ends
in downtown Martinsburg. Te annual parade
of bikes follows at approximately 5:30 p.m.. Fol-
lowing the parade, entertainment will be pro-
vided downtown by the Roadducks, Break of
Day, Jagged Edge and Sassy Girls.
Tis years event also will include Baddest
Bike Show, which takes place at Berkeley Plaza
from noon- 3:30 p.m. Entry cost is $10 per class,
and classes are stock, custom, cruiser and law
enforcement. Te best in show will take home
$250 and there will be a frst-place award in each
category, with a $50 prize attached.
Proceeds from Bike Night are split between
Main Street Martinsburg and Hospice of the
Panhandle. Over the past decade, Hospice has
received close to $100,000from the bike event.
Te Blue Knights have been absolutely phe-
nomenal supporters of Hospice of the Panhan-
dle over the years, said Hospice CEO Margaret
Cogswell. Tey understand and appreciate our
mission, and we are so grateful for their long-
standing support.
