St Charles Kauko Primary School Rehabilitation Project
St. Charles Kauko Primary School is located about 10km from the nearest town, Oyugis. As shown in the photos, one of the school buildings is made of mud wall and not safe and conducive for the children to study. In addition there was no teachers room for the teachers to have their meetings and other day to day management uses. Hence they are doing all their day to day schedules under the trees. At present, the church and Building No.1 & 2 provide the space for the pupils to study. The rehabilitated Building No.1 caters only three classes and the rest of the classes are conducted in the church and Building No.2. The church is also being used as classrooms due to insufficient place in Building No.1 and 2. With increasing pupils every year, these two buildings need urgent rehabilitation. In addition, the school also lacks some of the important equipments and material that a school need. Some of the urgent needs are as follows: 1) Lack of classrooms A total nine (9) classrooms needed. Currently we have three (3) classrooms 2) Lack of water for drinking and washing hands after toilet visits; 3) Inadequate latrine toilets; 4) Lack of administrative block currently operating under trees; 5) Lack of desk for both pupils and teachers; 6) Inadequate learning resources; We all know that education plays very important roles in community building and upliftment of society; especially in the rural settings. St Charles Kauko Primary School, being located in the rural village with such limited facilities; it is almost an impossible task to reach just even one of its missions, i.e. provide quality education to its children.
The rural population is facing lots of social, health, economical problems, generally due to lack of education. The current rural adult populations of above 50 years are generally illiterate. And possibly 50% of those aged between 20 and 50. With such high illiteracy rate in the rural settings and other social-health-economical issues; a properly aided school is a prerequisite to create a well-balanced society.
Just like any other school, St Charles Kauko Primary School has its mission to be part of national development and creating a well-informed society that benefits its country and people. However, that mission looks like a dream and will remain a dream if nothing is done to its current school condition that has 3 in-complete classrooms, 6 dilapidated rooms, with one latrine toilet without water.
We hope you and/or your organization can assist us on this project and work together to transform lives, give quality education to these helpless children, give a chance to children to study, and make these childrens dream to become reality one day.
Thank you so much for reading and looking forward for your generous support on this project and lets together transform lives.
Yours Sincerely Subramaniam M. Ramanaidu, Project Coordinator

About project coordinator: I was born and grew up in rubber estate in Rawang, a small town about 50km north of Kuala Lumpur, capital of Malaysia. Mr. Ramanaidu, my father was a rubber tapper with a meager salary and has to raise a family of four single handedly. Ms. Appalanarasammah, my mother, was partially disabled since 6 years old due to polio; hence couldnt carry out any rubber tapping work except household work. I have one elder brother and two elder sisters. All of us started to help my father at the rubber estate at the tender age of 6 to make ends meet. My 2 sisters dropped out of school when they are 14 and my brother when he was 17 due to the conditions of our family. We were raised in a poor conditions and my entire family struggled throughout 70s and 80s. I was fully funded during my primary school studies by Lions club Malaysia as I excel in my academic studies amidst my poor conditions. While I was in Primary School in the 70s, a group LIONS Club came to the school and selected some children and I was one of them. LIONS club members move from place to place identify poor rural students and provide them with basic necessities. I received from this generous LIONs Club 2 pairs of trouser, 2 pairs of shirts, 1 pair of shoes, 1 school bag, all my school books and fees were paid, etc. Although the conditions was difficult, no electricity, no piped water, living away from the town, I have the determination [to excel in education to break the poverty of my parents] and the drive to strife in my early school days. I survived my school life with my family support to continue studies and their encouragement not to drop out like them. Through hard work and relentless support from my parents, siblings, relatives, friends, and various organizations, I managed to pull through university with a degree in Geology (B.Sc.) in 1991. Being a geologist, I was given lots of opportunities to travel locally as well as internationally. Two projects that changed my life were Roseires Dam project in Sudan in 2009 and Magwagwa Dam in Kenya in 2011. These two projects have changed my entire view on life. Africa gave me the chance once again to learn, to study, to do more search & re-search, to understand our planet, and finally a chance to give back some or all that I have accumulated over the years in a way that benefits humanity and the environment. 2 PROPOSED PROJECT ABOUT SCHOOL
As part of TLWs vision to provide help to the rural poor, we identify a dire need at one of the rural schools in Kenya. The school, St. Charles Kauko Primary School (herein referred as SCKPS), is located in the western Nyanza region, Kasipul Division, Rachouny South, Kasipul Homa Bay, Kenya; about 350km north-west of Nairobi. The SCKPM is located about 10km from Oyugis a small town located between Kisii and Kisumu (Refer to Appendix B for the location map). 2.1 School History SCKPS is one of the governments public school found within Rachuonyo South District. SCKPS started in 2006 by the local community and taken over by District Education Board in July 2012. SCKPS was started as a nursery (ECDE) center school and began its journey at its church. It was expanded to a full primary with classes 1 to 7 in 2009. SCKPS presently has a total of 270 pupils with three government teachers. 2.2 School Facility SCKPS started its journey in 2006 with the church being used as the nursery school. The church is made of very basic building material that was available locally. The building was constructed using mud based walls and Zink roofing with the help of the local community who resides around Kauko. Over time, as more children started to walk in, another two buildings were constructed to cater the entire Standard 1 to 6, together with a latrine toilet. By 2010, there are three buildings within the church/school compound, i.e. 1) Church 2) Building No.1 3) Building No.2 4) Latrine Toilet
Note: Refer to Appendix C for the current Building Plan. St. Charles Kauko Primary School Rehabilitation Project Page 7 of 10 In early 2010, some of the mud walls started to give way and it became a big challenge to continue the school, especially Building No.1. As to tackle the collapsing of the walls and risk of roof collapse, SCKPS started to look for funds to enable them to re-build the school. In July 2010, SCKPS received some donation from Amani United Kingdom (AUK). AUK is a London based non-governmental organization (NGO) who extent their hands to poor countries in Africa. When AUK heard about the condition of SCKPS they started their research and got connected with Umosa Christian Centre, (UCC) a religious study group based in Oyugis. Subsequently, AUK-UCC decided to fund the school rehabilitation. Rehabilitation of SCKPS started in July 2010 and completed in December 2010. One of the old building, Building No.1 (refer to Appendix C1), was demolished and new building was erected. AUK-UCC only managed to rehabilitate Building No.1 without complete permanent classroom facilities due to insufficient funds. However, AUK-UCC managed to rescue part of the badly damaged Building No.1 and children have a strong shelter over them now. The church building and Building No. 2 were not repaired due to insufficient funds. As time goes by, more damage incurred and these two buildings need urgent rehabilitation. 2.3 The Desperate Need At present, the Church and Building No.1 & 2 provide the space for the pupils to study. The rehabilitated Building No.1 caters only three classes and the rest of the classes are conducted in the church and Building No.2. The church is also being used as classrooms due to insufficient place in Building No.1 and 2. With increasing pupils every year, these two buildings need urgent rehabilitation. In addition, the school also lacks some of the important equipments and material that a school need. Some of the urgent needs are as follows: 7) Lack of enough classrooms A total nine (9) classrooms needed. Currently we have three (3) classrooms from Building No.1; 8) Lack of water for drinking and washing hands after toilet visits; 9) Inadequate latrine toilets; 10) Lack of administrative block currently operating under trees; 11) Lack of desk for both pupils and teachers; 12) Inadequate learning resources;
2.4 The Mission Just like any schools, SCKPS also has its mission and vision, such as To provide quality education to her students; To provide outstanding learning experience for the students; To be the best school in Kenya; To create great students whom will subsequently become citizens that will be building and developing Kenya to a greater height; To create a well-educated child so that he or she can uplift his family in the future; To create a well-informed child so that he/she knows his/her rights such as avoiding early marriages, avoiding sexual abuses, etc; And many-many more
St. Charles Kauko Primary School Rehabilitation Project Page 8 of 10 To achieve one or two of the above vision, the school needs some basic infrastructure like Proper classrooms; Proper tools and equipment; Dedicated & motivated teachers; Adequate facilities for both teachers and students; Enough room for both teachers and students to move around and do their duties;
We all know that education plays very important roles in community building and upliftment of society; especially in the rural settings. SCKPS, being located in the rural village with such limited facilities; it is almost an impossible task to reach just even one of its missions.
As such, SCKPM mission is to be part of the national development and creating a well-informed society that benefits its country and people. However, that mission looks like a dream and will remain a dream if nothing is done to its current school condition that has 3 in-complete classrooms, 6 dilapidated rooms, with one latrine toilet without water.
3 THE PROPOSED REHABILITATION PROJECT DETAILS
Due to the dilapidated conditions of SCKPS, TLO is proposing this project to rehabilitate the school and to enable children to get good quality education. The following presents the details of the proposed rebuilding program for SCKPS.
3.1 Plans and drawings Details of the current building plan is shown in Appendix C1. As can be seen in the plan, there are 4 main blocks at SCKPS. Church (Old building) Building No. 1 Building No. 2 Partially built Church building The rehabilitation program is divided into three (3) phases in accordance to the children need and described as follows: a) The first phase covers the rebuilding of school classroom, then b) The second phase will be focused on office block, then c) The third phase will be the construction of the church. The proposed new building plan is presented in Appendix C2. 3.2 Materials and Bill of Quantities Details of material and approximate quantities required for the rehabilitation program is presented Appendix D.
St. Charles Kauko Primary School Rehabilitation Project Page 9 of 10 3.3 Budgetary Cost of Construction Total project cost is estimated to be in the region of Ksh2,000,000 ~ RM80,000 ~ US$27,000. Detail breakdown of this cost is presented in Appendix D.
3.4 Project Work Plan and Duration The SCKPS rehabilitation program is expected to take about 3 months to complete. As there are 3 classrooms in Building No.2, we propose that construction to be started during the school holidays. The main priority will be to complete re-building Building No.2. The extension of classroom at Building No.1 can be carried on even during school days as this does not interrupt the school sessions.
