NEW YORK The first face-to-face session in five
years between Port Authority of New York and New
Jersey officials and the commuters they serve was in-
formative for a few and infuriating for others, but near-
ly all were skeptical that better times were coming for a
trip to a bus terminal some say is about as pleasant as
root canal.
If it was easy, they would have fixed it years ago,
said commuter Alan Lash of Wayne, who stopped in the
terminal at 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue to talk to
transportation and authority officials Tuesday. The ter-
minal has been the focal point of much of the rage from
commuters into the city, with complaints that the build-
ing is dirty and dark and that waits for buses can frus-
trate even the most patient travelers.
Lash said he doubts conditions will change because
of the many governmental and political entities in-
volved in the commuting trip. The Port Authority is a
bistate agency with commissioners appointed by gov-
ernors of New York and New Jersey. NJ Transit runs

The death of comedian and actor Robin Williams has
intersected with efforts in New Jersey by a former first
lady and others to erase the stigma attached to clinical
depression and mental illness that, coupled with sub-
stance or alcohol abuse, put people at an increased risk
of suicide.
Mary Jo Codey and her husband, former Gov. Rich-
ard Codey, last year formed a nonprofit foundation, the
Codey Fund for Mental Health, with the goal of finding
quality mental health care for all who need it.
The suicide Monday of Williams, a well-known ce-
lebrity who had acknowledged his years-long fight with
depression, will prompt conversations about what can
be done about national suicide rates that have risen
sharply in the past decade, said Bob Davison, a Codey
Fund board member and the executive director of the
Mental Health Association of Essex County.

T
he looming casino closures in Atlantic City, in-
cluding the announcement Tuesday that the ill-
fated Revel Casino Hotel would shut down just
two years after it opened, could set off a chain
of promotions from surviving casinos hoping
to win over customers, but the industry still
needs to smartly play the hand its been dealt,
an analyst said.
Namely, it needs to convince visitors from neighbor-
ing states to pass up the same slot machines and table
games closer to home, drive an extra hour or two and
stay in the seaside resort.
Its hard to compete, said Sal Scheri, president and
chief executive officer of WhiteSand Gaming, an Atlan-
tic City consulting firm. Now, because youve got so
much competition, truly only something that is best in
the market does well.
The industry was left to consider its next step after
Revel officials said they couldnt find a viable buyer in
bankruptcy court and planned to close by Sept. 10.
The announcement marked the fourth Atlantic City
casino that is on course to close this year. They are vic-
tims of competition that has emerged during the past
