Canada compared to other countries

For my geography research project is comparing the country named Fiji to Canada and examining the
development status, income, human development index, birth and death rates, population density, and
literacy rates. I will use this to determine whether Fiji is equal to Canada based on these factors.
There are three types of countries depending on the Human Development Index created by the United
Nations that go from 1 the lowest to 10 the highest. Developed means the country is rated very high
from 0.8 to 0.9, developing is lower than 0.7, and least developed doesnt have a rating or it is incredibly
low compared to the rest of the world. Some countries dont have an HDI because they havent become
complete sovereign, dont have any of the factors that count towards it, or the factors are super low.
Factors that determine a countrys status on HDI.
1. income:
a. all countries arent defined a developed and/or developing because some countries
havent gotten around to being sovereign or are able to use their own resources. there
is a least developed country which doesnt match the requirements for developed or
less-developed.
b. per capita income: is the average income per person in a country or city
c. gross domestic product: is the market value of all the goods produced in a country

2. human development:
3. life expectancy: how long the people live on average
4. education: how much education people have access to
In the HDI scale:
Canada is eleventh. All the countries in the top 47 countries seem to be considered highly developed
countries and Fiji is the 96
th
with a rating of 0.702 so it can be considered a developing country. Canada
has an HDI index of 0.911 and is a developed country.
Developed country is a country that is very high on the HDI scale and it is a sovereign state that has a
highly developed economy and advanced technological infrastructure relative to other less developed
nations:
The top ten HDI countries for 2013 are:
The top ten developed countries are: Norway, Australia, United States, Netherlands, Germnay, New
Zealand, Ireland, Sweden, Switzerland, Japan
LDC is a name of a least developed country: it is a country that shows the lowest standards for the HDI
index by the United Nations having the lowest ratings in the entire world.

Top ten most least developed countries are: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Niger, Mozambique,
Chad, Burkina Faso, Mali, Eritrea, Central African Republic, Burundi, Guinea
Economies of Countries:
Newly industrialized countries (NIC) is a classification based on political scientists and economists
observations. These are countries that have not reached developed country status but are still beating
the other countries in their region in economic growth. Fiji isnt considered a fast industrialized country
yet.
Top ten NIC countries in rate are South Africa, Mexico, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and
Philippines. Fiji is one of the most developed countries in the pacific islands because of their resources
like forest, mineral, and fish. It is considered an NIC but Canada is already developed and isnt
considered a newly industrialized country.
Advanced Emerging Markets are found almost like developed markets but they arent fully developed
but they are still on their way. The top ten are China, South Korea, Thailand, Peru, Czech republic,
Malaysia, Turkey, Chile, Russia, Indonesia

Comparing Fiji with Canada

5. Birthrate: the number of life births per thousand of population per year

6. Fijis birthrate is 21.2 children per 1000 poeple in 2011 and Canada has 11 per 1000 people in
2011. Canada has a lower birth rate because of successful births and better medicine.

Life expectancy: average number of years a human lives in the country

7. Canada life expectancy is 80.93 years over all and Fiji life expectancy is 69.35 years for the
overall population average. Canada is higher because of overall quality of life calculated by the
HDI.

8. 2009 average world birth rate is 20.3 in 2009 per 1000 total populations, a 0.9 decrease from
2003s average which is 21.2. This is because more and more countries are becoming more
developed through good medicine, resources, and globalization.

9. Death rate: is the number of deaths per population per 1000 individuals per year.

10. Canada has a death rate of 8.2 deaths/1000 population in 2013 compared to Fiji which has 5.96
deaths/1000 populations in 2013. This means that the population is so high in Canada you will
have more deaths per 1000 people but Fijis death rate is a bit too high for its population.

11. Canadas death rate is rising because the baby boomers are becoming old and are starting to
pass away and Canadas overall population is growing.

12. Literacy rate: is the ability to read and write per country and its population

13. Canada has a literacy rate over 97% and Fiji has a literacy rate of 93.7 %. Fijis literacy rate is not
bad compared to most countries in the African continent but still less than North America and
North Asia.

14. Population density is a measurement of population per unit area or unit volume. Canada has a
population density of 3.79 people per square km. Fiji has a density of 47.51 per square km. The
difference is due to Canada being incredibly large with the Arctic portion and Fiji is a small
pacific island where all the lands can be inhabited.
