Executive Summary This report details the CSR activities of a renowned private limited telecommunication company of Bangladesh (Grameenphone).
We have done this report for the completion of our course MGT-211 which is titled as Principle of management. As of the title of this course, completing this final term paper has a great impact on the overall course since this term paper carries a great portion of the total grade and our learning from this course.
The abbreviation of CSR is Corporate Social responsibility. Harvard Business School first initiated the concept Corporate Social Responsibilities in 1946. To define, it is a businesss concern for societys welfare. CSR goes well beyond more than being ethical. Actually, it is

This term paper was given by our honorable course instructor Afsana Akhter as the Partial fulfillment of the Principle of Management (MGT211) Course to gather knowledge and experience on analyzing the CSR activities of Grameenphone.

Grameenphone is the leading telecommunication organization in Bangladesh and we tried to make an efficient report on them. Our main objectives of the report are as follows:
i. Identifying the different CSR activities by the company. ii. To identify and evaluate whether their CSR activities are effective for the society or not.

Our honored course instructor of Principle of Management, Afsana Akhter assigned us to prepare a report on the CSR activities of Grameenphone, a well-known telecommunication company of Bangladesh as a partial requirement of the course, to gain practical knowledge about the CSR activities.

We faced following limitation during preparing the term paper: i. Time Shortage ii. As Grameenphone is a big corporation it was difficult to prepare the term paper within this time. iii. Due to time shortage, we could not cover all the required fields. iv. As it is a huge company it was difficult to know everything about the company. v. 02. Topic Overview In the era of globalization, free market competition, diverse workforce and increasing technological diversity and complexity, organizations are facing new challenges. In order to cope with new situations and challenges corporate world needs solution of such demands. In every initiatives of business there lies societys welfare. The power of and influence of business in society is greater than ever before. Business makes major contribution towards society as such creating goods and services, generating employment, contributing to the national exchequer and most importantly driving for the economic development. Nowadays a new concept adds up in the corporate world called Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Although CSR, as a concept, defies a single definition, there is a universal acceptance of the ideology and that refers to business engagement that creates economic value for itself while meeting social, ethical, legal and public expectations. Thus, CSR is the management of a companys impact on its stakeholders, the environment and the community in which it operates and is more than just a philanthropic activity for some charitable causes. Today, CSR has attracted public attention and has received global resonance, as the risks associated with unbridled growth are becoming realities. As the demands on business to be accountable are constantly becoming more complex and challenging, CSR provides the means to understand and appreciate these challenges more clearly. This term paper provides some Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) of Bangladeshi companies like Grameen Phone (GP) Bangladesh, HSBC Bank Bangladesh Limited and British American Tobacco Bangladesh Limited. Those social activities provide evidence of having much more credibility for the existence of Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR).
a.CSR in Bangladesh Context Standing at the advent of globalization and capitalization, the corporate and business people of Bangladesh just observed what a customer or a shareholder needs apart from profits. To cope up with the modern era Bangladeshi business and corporate arena also change its color

and keep on customizing according to the taste of the new clients. But there are some corporate companies which always want to take the lead and create some trends towards the corporate world to follow the trend and the trend becomes the rule. Companies like Grameen Phone, HSBC Bank and British American Tobacco (BAT) are some of the frontiers in Bangladesh. These companies take some commendable social initiatives which patronize other corporate company to come over and contribute for the society. In a word, Bangladeshi corporate houses are welcoming CSR and more social responsibilities are taking ahead.

b. Reason behind choosing Grameenphone Grameenphone Bangladesh Limited is countrys one of the leading corporate companies at present. In Bangladeshi perspective, Grameenphone plays a keynote role for social activities. As the company doing a lot of CSR activities, it creates a benchmark for other companies too. To get the whole view of Bangladeshi Corporate Social responsibilities, we choose Grameenphone.

b.Focus: GPs Social investments are consolidated in three main focus areas, namely, Healthcare, Education and Environment.
c.Health
Almost half of the countrys population lives below the poverty line and are deprived from basic primary healthcare. In partnership with Pathfinder International and USAID,

Grameenphone has been supporting the Safe Motherhood and Infant Care program since May 2007. Under the program, free comprehensive primary healthcare services are provided to economically disadvantage pregnant mothers and infants through over 300 Smiling Sun clinics located in 61 districts around the country. So far 1,333,314 services have been provided to the economically disadvantaged mothers and infants under this program. In 2009, two clinic-on-wheels and five ambulances were handed over to different NGOs of Smiling Sun Network, to increase the accessibility of maternal and infant healthcare services to the hard-to-reach economically disadvantaged population. Grameenphone, jointly with Sight Savers International, has been organizing free Eye Camps to ensure eye-care services since 2007. In total, 21 such free eye-camps have been organized throughout the country and a total of 29,270 patients were given free eye care support, among them 3,887 patients were administered Intra Ocular lens or cataract surgeries.
d.Education
The main goal of Grameenphones CSR Education initiative is to provide access to education and information. Grameen Shikhkha
GrameenPhone provides scholarship to meritorious but under privileged students through a scholarship fund at different academic levels, in collaboration with Grameen Shikhkha, an organization of Grameen Bank Family.
Alokdeep, Non-formal School cum cyclone shelter
Grameenphone, as part of its rehabilitation plans in the SIDR affected areas, provided financial assistance to build education center-cum-cyclone shelters in the southern belt of the country. Four such non-formal primary school-cum-cyclone shelters were planned, of which

two are already operational. The new cyclone shelters will be used as primary school throughout the year to provide non-formal primary education to underprivileged children of the locality.
e.Information Boat
Grameenphone, in partnership with CARE Bangladesh, started the Information Boat project. Boats are also equipped with digital contents, such as livelihood and agricultural information, suited for the specific areas served by the designated boats. A typical information Boat is equipped with computers, Internet, photocopies, fax machines, printers, webcams and scanners. So far, four such Information Boats have been launched in the northeast region.
f.Environment
Environmental campaign titled Stay Green, Stay Close, was launched in June 2009 with an objective to support a healthier environment through innovative environmental activations and initiatives, as well as increasing awareness among different stakeholder groups. As part of this program, over 21,000 free saplings were distributed across the country.

g.Other Initiatives
Sponsoring Special Olympics Bangladesh
Grameenphone became the sole sponsor of Special Olympics Bangladesh in 2007 when it provided necessary support and training for the athletes to participate in the Special Olympics Games 2007 in Beijing, China. The team won 71 medals in different categories. In 2008-09, the company supported and organized regional talent hunts across the country. A total of 94 (64 male and 30 female) intellectually challenged athletes were selected from four regional talent hunt programs. These selected athletes are to be trained and groomed for the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2011 in Athens, Greece.
Emergency Relief Works
A total of 14,500 blankets were distributed in different regions of the country during the cold wave in December. Grameenphone employees donated warm clothes and actively participated in the distribution of relief materials. After the devastating cyclone AILA hit the country, Grameenphone came forward to help the victims with basic food items, healthcare service through medical teams and providing temporary shelters made with GPs used billboard wrappers.

At Grameenphone, we acknowledge the complementary relationship and interdependency between responsibility and commercial interest. Our strategic ambitions and the countrys development issues are mutually inclusive, and hence, they cannot be treated in isolation. We believe good business is good development and vice versa. As the business grows, it generates positive economic and social impact in the form of beneficial services, jobs and contributions to the National Exchequer. Likewise, good development equals good business. Thus, our relationship with Bangladesh is built on a partnership which strives to achieve common economic and social goals. When the future is shared, so is the responsibility to perfect it. We believe, we have important contributions in order to ensure continued growth and development of Bangladesh. Through our commercial presence and our corporate initiatives, we aim to aid in reaching the development targets set for the country.
b.Health
Safe Motherhood and Infant Care Project
In partnership with Pathfinder International and USAID, Grameenphone has been supporting the Safe Motherhood and Infant Care program since May 2007. From inception up to November 2010, 1,765,088 services have been provided to the economically disadvantaged mothers and infants under this program. Four clinic-on- wheels and ten ambulances were handed over to different NGOs of Smiling Sun Network, to increase the accessibility of maternal and infant healthcare services to the hard-to-reach economically disadvantaged population as well as to facilitate home delivery by skilled birth attendants. Under the project, 15,976 deliveries had been conducted by skilled professionals.
Free Eye Care Camps

In total, 24 such free eye-camps have been organized throughout the country and a total of 36,327 patients were given free eye care support, among them 4,743 patients were administered Intra Ocular lens or cataract surgeries.
Climate Change Grameen Phone Climate project aims to reduce carbon emission become environment friendly and create a momentum with the community and people. The key aim of that laudable project is to reduce companys overall carbon footprint by 30% within 2015. The target was set using the year 2008s actual emission as the baseline emission. The reduction target for the year 2010, 11 and 13 are 11%, 13%, 15% and 205 respectively. Things to be noted that 15 Green base stations are going on for deploying solar power system in another 140 sites. b.Steps on Climate Change Green Footprint with Green Business Our Climate is changing very fast and affecting the earth with its adverse consequences. Asa responsible business, GP launched its Climate Change Program back in 2008 to gain sustainability and as well as to help people and community. GP has an environmental roadmap which aims to promote a low-carbon society, and GP's first priority is to take responsibility for the excess CO2 emissions generated by its own operations. GP has set a target of reducing 40% carbon emission (CO2) within 2015from the business as usual situation considering 2008 as the baseline.
Climate Change Initiatives Renewable Energy Grameen Phone initiated renewable energy project back in 2007 to operate our off-grid sites with green energy in a business viable mode. At present we have 50 BTS sites running on solar. Work is in progress for installing solar in another 110 sites. Deployment of 50 Solar BTSs from 2007 to 2011 saved approximately 598 Thousand Liters of fuel which measures to over 1.5Thousand Tons of CO2 reduction.

Network Modernization Project
Through BTS Swapping and Core Sites Consolidation & Optimization GP took two projects, one is network modernization project which is to reduce its Network energy consumption by swapping of 7,272 BTSs with energy efficient modern equipments and another is to consolidate and optimize Core nodes from 40 to 20 along with to reduce locations from 22to 9 throughout the country with an aim to reduce energy consumption and increase work efficiency. With these two initiatives, GP has saved till now approximately 48 GHz (Gig watt hours) electricity and 83 thousand liters of fuel which is over 27 thousand tons of CO2 reduction. 50% energy consumption reduction in network sites has been possible from network Modernization project.
Community Power Project
Grameenphone partnered with University of Oslo to develop an advanced Community Power Project. GP piloted this project in a remote village named Paharpur, under Hobigonj district in Sylhet Division, at the northeast of Bangladesh. A mini-grid has been developed and around 136 Households are connected to this grid and getting power from 5 pm till midnight. The ultimate goal of the initiative is to develop business models that would promote a self- sustaining community power infrastructure. This also enables the roll-out of Community Information Center (CIC) in areas that would otherwise be inaccessible.
GPHouse A Green Workplace

GPHouse has opened new doors to a new way of working. Space efficiency, energy efficiency, optimal usage of natural lighting, water treatment, and internal air treatment are some of the common terms associated with this building. Grameenphone has again pioneered its way in successfully deploying the first cogeneration system here at GPHouse. The system allows generation of own electricity and the use of by-product heat in absorption chiller for internal cooling of the building. The building is saving approx. 60% energy comparing to the traditional building system. The building has a waste water treatment plant which is saving up to 31% of the regular water consumption. Water savings has reached now 12 million Liters/Yr and the energy savings is approx. 11 GHz/Yr means over 6.1 Thousand tons of CO2 reduction.
06.Conclusion: To sum up, in our country many believe that CSR is a marketing strategy for most of the companies but they are doing it for the welfare of society and also helping people by doing different corporate social activities. So, CSR makes our society economically strong as well as it is the best way to define a brand value. . The main objective of this report was to understand and find out the corporate social responsibilities of Grameenphone limited in the telecommunication business in Bangladesh. This report broadens our understanding in CSR. Through this task we have gained real life experience on Principle of management. In doing this report, we faced some difficulties like secrecy of information, prior experience etc.
07.Recommendation After completion of our term paper on Grameenphone, we have learnt that the company is a matured one in the telecommunication industry and it has done a lot of CSR activities in the

past years. Although Grameenphone needs to be more careful with their CSR activities wheather they are contributing to the society or just enlarging their brand name. Therefore, Grameenphone limited can thrive towards their assigned goal in the telecommunication business in Bangladesh. Mentioned above Corporate Social Responsibilities done by Grameenphone are convincing enough to understand a matter that CSR should exist and it will exist in the future corporate arena.
