s we celebrate the “Trium-
phal Entry” of Jesus into the
capitol of Judaism in the first
century, let us remember the
100 million who have died
because His message of Love
was not heard or heeded. We join today with
the World Alliance of Reformed Churches to
remember not just the triumphal march, but to
also remember the tragic march from Freedom
into Slavery.

Never forget the “holocaust of Africa,”
churches declare!
T
he transatlantic slave trade was an
“African holocaust” that should never
be forgotten, says a coalition of global
ecumenical church bodies, working to com-
memorate the 200th anniversary of its abolition
this year.
“Two hundred years after the abolition,

story of human degradation and indignity,”
say delegates representing the World Council
of Churches (WCC), the World Alliance of
Reformed Churches (WARC) and the Council
for World Mission (CWM) who met in Geneva
March 15 to 17.
While the dungeons are a reminder of this
horrible stain on the history of humanity, the
legacy of the slave trade remains today in the
racism, economic exploitation and psychological
damage done to millions of Africans and their
descendants and millions of the world’s poor,
the church groups say.
We further call upon
churches, governments
and businesses who were
unjustly enriched by the
slave trade not only to
repent but to demonstrate
fruits of that repentance.
“The global slave trade removed some of the
most productive peoples in Africa, resulting in
the African holocaust. Global trade now contin-
ues the degradation in the form of child labour,
sex workers, human trafficking, incarceration of
young people and institutional racism.
“The ecumenical community calls upon
people and governments to rise up to their
historical duty to recover and reclaim the divin-

ity in all humanity so that economic and racial
justice prevails,” the church groups state.
“We further call upon churches, govern-
ments and businesses who were unjustly en-
riched by the slave trade not only to repent but
to demonstrate fruits of that repentance.”
The message was issued by the project coor-
dinators, marking the 200th anniversary of the
Abolition of the Slave Trade Act of the Brit-
ish House of Commons on March 25, 1807,
though the trade continued for some time, and
survivors and their families maintain that aboli-
tion was actually achieved through resistance
and revolt by the enslaved and not primarily
through the altruistic endeavours of British
abolitionists.
Representatives of the global church groups
met recently to map out plans to mark the
passing of the bill and document the slave
trade’s legacies through statements, education
programmes, international consultations and a
transatlantic boat trip to re-enact the journey of
the slaves.
Samuel Kobia, general secretary of the WCC,
said in a March 16th letter to the British Prime
Minister Tony Blair that European nations
should begin a process of “truth-telling, repen-
tance and reconciliation” concerning the slavery
trade and the colonial legacy.

Africa await an unambiguous apology and clear

their participation in this terrible part of colonial
history,” said Kobia, a Kenyan.
“We boldly declare ‘never again’ but we
must also use this historic occasion to commit
ourselves to working for a world without any
kind of enslavement that keeps God’s people
from enjoying fullness of life,” said Setri Nyomi,
a Ghanaian and WARC’s general secretary.
“We pay tribute to the brave women and
men and their descendants who bore the burden
of slavery. Millions of Africans were captured,
brutalized and murdered in the name of eco-
nomic gain; let us commit ourselves to making
that kind of enslavement a thing of the past.”
Roderick Hewitt of Jamaica, moderator of
CWM, who travelled to the slave dungeons in
Ghana in 2004, calling them a “a dark epiph-

brought about the “unjust enrichment of the
few through the exploitation of the vulnerable.
“This global economic structure is mirrored
today in the neoliberal economic framework and
needs to be so identified and addressed.”

God delusion.” Meanwhile, Tippett, and others
like her, while by no means out of view, still do
not generate the audiences and responses that
the noisy extremists do. So I seethe and sulk
a bit when those who complain that they are
alienated by the extremes in religions often do
not bother with Tippett and her kind.
Tippett has interviewed a large and diverse
cast of characters, and draws on that experience
in her book, which is, in some sense, like a first
draft of a memoir — she’s too young to be tak-
ing a long look back. The book offers a concise
look at her Southern Baptist childhood, a tem-
porary drift from faith, political correspondence
years, learning at Yale Divinity School, and the
invention of her NPR program. The result is
not an egocentric program or book, but a set of
testimonies filtered through her experience. Tip-
pett neither hides her own faith nor parades it,
but uses it as a base for drawing out the personal
experiences of her interviewees and quotees.
Where are we? With respect to public religion
I used to say that the excitement was at the con-
junction of “the left of the right and the right
of the left, which is not the center.” Left of the
right: “open,” engaged and engaging Evangeli-
cals, Orthodox Jews, and one kind of Catho-
lics. Right of the left: mainstream Protestants,
Reform and Conservative Jews, and many other
kinds of Catholics who are mindful of and draw
on tradition as they fashion new themes.
Polemicists and firebrands often dismiss such
people as “moderates,” and imply that, because
these “moderates” are not verbal street-fight-
ers, they have nothing to say. Contrariwise, they
usually have the most to say — but in our pres-
ent culture it is harder for them to get a hearing.
Tippett is not alone as author or broadcaster.
I think of Bob Abernethy of “Religion & Ethics
Newsweekly,” who is publishing soon. I hope
Tippett’s example will inspire still others among
her spiritual kin to be forthright, and to better
understand how and that they are “speaking of
faith,” not shouting about it. Case closed.
The alternative to extremism is not wishy-
washiness but good sense.

OF SINS
A
lmighty and Most Merciful Father,
we come before You, acknowledging
our sins, our shortcomings, and our
breaking of our Covenant with You.
Not only have we done things we ought not to
have done, said things we ought not to have said,
left undone so many things we ought to have done
and been silent when we should have witnessed for
You.
Not only are we guilty of that, O Lord; but we
have also closed our eyes and pretended not to
see the injustices, the racism and the evil which
pervade our everyday lives.
We have shut our ears and pretended not to hear
the cries for liberation which come from the lips,
lives and hearts of the oppressed — even our own
Black brothers and sisters!
Forgive us, O Lord, renew our courage and
faith, and keep us ever mindful of Thy great
sacrifice. Hear us, we beseech Thee, as we come
to You in love and worship giving Your name the
praise forevermore.

sixth sunday in lent
WHEN GOD ENTERS OUR PICTURE
a time for celebration
I
s Palm Sunday a bitter-sweet occasion? There
is pleasure, to be sure, but joy touched by a
foreshadowing of loss and suffering. Here is a
challenge to every human being. When the problems
of our world press in upon us, can we still feel free
to celebrate? We know that few victories in life are
permanent. Can we still enjoy them? Palm Sunday
tells us, “Yes! Life itself is to be celebrated, and when
Jesus arrives in our midst, it is always a celebrative
time.”
The word, “Hosanna,” that people cried out
to Jesus as He entered Jerusalem, is more than an
exclamation of praise. Literally, it means, “Save,
now!” This becomes part of the celebration because
it speaks of a conviction that Jesus indeed will save,
bringing deliverance and new hope.
Things seldom work out exactly as we expect
them to. Christians in the early Church expected
that Jesus would soon return and live among
them again. Yet, centuries later we still have not
seen this kind of “second coming.” Jesus comes in
many ways at different times. He came as a child
at Christmas, as a deliverer on Palm Sunday and a
resurrected hope on Easter morning. Jesus comes
anew into our own lives, when we realize that He
saves us from sin and aimlessness.
All of Jesus’ comings are times for celebration.
Celebrating does not mean that all is now complete
and perfect. The birthdays that people celebrate
each year do not mark an ending, but a milepost
along the way. We do well to celebrate Palm Sunday
with expectancy and heartfelt anticipation that
Jesus’ coming to us will make a difference.

Good Gifts – Greater Reactions
F
ollowing our Chinese dinner, we opened the
fortune cookies. Mine said: “The best thing
about giving is that the reaction is always
greater than the action.” Think about it. Is that true?
Most gifts bring joy to the giver and the receiver.
The pleasure is now doubled. Obviously, the gift
plus doubled pleasure is greater than the gift alone.
Even if the gift was a wrong choice or not appreci-
ated, the reactions of both parties, added to the gift,
become more than the gift itself.
But how much greater than the gift can the reac-
tions become? Consider this. When driving in heavy
traffic, have you allowed another driver to enter the
road in front of you? Later, did that driver allow cars
to enter, and then those drivers did, too? Or if you
were entering from the side, were you irked by the
driver who wouldn’t let you in? Pleased by the driver
who would, did you react with thoughtfulness? If
so, your gift was courtesy, your reaction, part of “the
ripple effect.”
“The ripple effect” doesn’t just add reactions to
gifts, it multiples them! We seldom know how many
ripples our gifts create.
Church offerings multiply this way. Rippling
across the church and around the world into homes,
schools, farms, shelters and hospitals, they affect
communities and individuals in ways we’ll never see.
Time doesn’t destroy them. We are blessed by such
giving…but greater still are the multiplied reactions
to our gifts and the blessings they compound.

Access centers are television stations and
media outlets which allow for local, munici-
pal, educational programming. One of these media
outlets is CAN TV.
Currently, the Illinois legislature is considering
a telecommunications bill backed by AT&T which
may serve to severely limit local cable outlets like
CAN TV. According to information gathered from
www.keepusconnected.org, if HB 1500 passes,
community information shared in local markets will
be undercut, major cable conglomerates will be able
to decide the areas they serve, and PEG program-
ming will be severely limited.
This appears to be yet another example of
major media corporations’ attempts to displace
and monopolize the information shared with
communities. PEG’s serve an important func-
tion in our society as they keep the communities
which they serve informed about current events,
and local events. Through PEG’s, one can watch
school board meetings, city council sessions, and
other educational programs which edify the lives
of citizens and communities.
