Eyeglasses? Glasses were believed to be created first near 1268-1289 C.E. no one knows who exactly made them. They were created using blown glass and leather bindings, they were normally balanced on the nose or held in front of the eyes. Also in 1504 Leonardo da Vinci is widely regarded as having come up with the idea for contact lenses Eyeglasses in the 1700s Two of the most important innovations to the eyeglasses were made during the 1700s: Side or temple pieces which were placed over the ears for support. (First advertised in 1729) And Benjamin Franklins innovation known as bifocals which allowed for two different focuses in glasses. (invented in 1784) Eyeglasses in the 1800s The 1800s offered the Lorgnette which was a style of hand-held eyeglasses for women who could not afford ones with temple pieces. Also in 1887 The first pair of contact lenses were created out of blown glass. (ouch) Eyeglasses from 1900 to 1920 One of the most popular styles of eyeglasses at the time were known as pince-nez glasses. They had no temple pieces and were simply held in place by noseguards which pinched the nose tightly. They were made popular by political figures like Theodore Roosevelt and Calvin Coolidge Eyeglasses from 1920 to 1950 An actor by the name of Harold Lloyd who wore large tortoiseshell spectacles with temple pieces which caused temple spectacle popularity to explode. In the 1930s sunglasses became popular for the first time and we gained the ability to create colored lenses of just about every color you can think of. Also in the 1930s and 40s they came up with the idea to place a strip of hard plastic on the glass of contacts. 1950s to Today! In the 1939s the contact lenses were made of glass which were replaced by purely hard plastic lenses in the 1950s. In the 1980s we gained the ability to produce lighter and more cost effective plastic lenses as opposed to glass ones. In 1986 the first soft contact lenses were made. Silicone-hydrogel contact lenses first marketed in 2002 2010 Custom-manufactured silicone-hydrogel lenses became available.
