Innovation of the Eyeglasses

I CAN SEE EVERYTHING!!!

Eyeglasses?
Glasses were believed to be created first near 1268-1289 C.E. no one
knows who exactly made them.
They were created using blown glass and leather bindings, they were
normally balanced on the nose or held in front of the eyes.
Also in 1504 Leonardo da Vinci is widely regarded as having come up with
the idea for contact lenses
Eyeglasses in the 1700s
Two of the most important innovations to the eyeglasses were made
during the 1700s:
Side or temple pieces which were placed over the ears for support.
(First advertised in 1729)
And Benjamin Franklins innovation known as bifocals which allowed
for two different focuses in glasses. (invented in 1784)
Eyeglasses in the 1800s
The 1800s offered the Lorgnette which was a style of hand-held
eyeglasses for women who could not afford ones with temple pieces.
Also in 1887 The first pair of contact lenses were created out of
blown glass. (ouch)
Eyeglasses from 1900 to 1920
One of the most popular styles of eyeglasses at the time were known
as pince-nez glasses.
They had no temple pieces and were simply held in place by
noseguards which pinched the nose tightly.
They were made popular by political figures like Theodore Roosevelt
and Calvin Coolidge
Eyeglasses from 1920 to 1950
An actor by the name of Harold Lloyd who wore large tortoiseshell
spectacles with temple pieces which caused temple spectacle
popularity to explode.
In the 1930s sunglasses became popular for the first time and we
gained the ability to create colored lenses of just about every color
you can think of.
Also in the 1930s and 40s they came up with the idea to place a strip
of hard plastic on the glass of contacts.
1950s to Today!
In the 1939s the contact lenses were made of glass which were
replaced by purely hard plastic lenses in the 1950s.
In the 1980s we gained the ability to produce lighter and more cost
effective plastic lenses as opposed to glass ones.
In 1986 the first soft contact lenses were made.
Silicone-hydrogel contact lenses first marketed in 2002
2010 Custom-manufactured silicone-hydrogel lenses became
available.
