Ecumenical Advocacy Days
2008: Claiming a New Vision of Security
March 7–10, 2008, Washington, D.C.
Please save the date for the sixth annual Ecu-
menical Advocacy Days conference. Our theme,
2008: Claiming a New Vision of Security, will
guide and inspire this gathering of over 1,000
religious advocates. Experts will train partici-
pants on advocacy and policy issues, and on
Monday the conference will conclude with
lobby visits on Capitol Hill. This year’s event
will be held at the Hilton Alexandria Mark
Center and will feature speakers such as Arch-
bishop Vicken Aykazian, President Elect of the
National Council of Churches and Dr. Lisa

Congressional Update:
No Child Left Behind Act
Reauthorization Delayed
Leaders of Senate and House committees pre-
paring for the reauthorization of the No Child
Left Behind Act announced in the first week
of November that that chasms of disagreement
under the surface of the conversation will make
it impossible to bring the reauthorization of the
federal education law to the floor of Congress in
2007. Thank you for your advocacy, for in this
instance, Congressional inaction reflects grow-
ing pressure by many advocates including those
in faith communities who have insisted that
Congress transform NCLB’s test-and-punish
philosophy and instead recapture the original
federal education goal: to expand and equalize
educational opportunity. It will be important
to broaden and deepen the conversation in the
months ahead and for people of faith to con-
tinue to advocate to Congress. You can track

Congressional Update:
The DREAM Act
The DREAM Act finally made it to the floor
of the Senate in late October and sadly failed,
by a close vote of 52–44. This is the law that, if
passed, would grant some children, brought at
a young age to this country by undocumented
parents, the right to qualify for college entrance,
college scholarships, military service, and a path
toward citizenship. When this bill finally came to
the Senate floor after being introduced year after
year since 2001, its bipartisan sponsors hoped
it would make a space in this country for the
roughly 65,000 high school graduates who face
this situation each year, children who are likely to
have grown up here and who in many cases have
no familiarity with another country to which

Fair Trade and the 2008 Elections
If you live in an early caucus/primary state (espe-
cially IA, NH, SC or NV) and you’re interested
in Fair Trade/Sustainable Development for the
developing world, then take a look at the follow-
ing project:
Organizers in Iowa and New Hampshire are
asking questions of the Presidential hopefuls at
their events, and doing other educational work
to inform the voting public and the candidates
themselves about fair trade policy. The group is
advocating a policy that benefits workers, family
farmers, and the environment in the US, and
helps the cause of democratic development and
poverty relief in the developing world. If you
are interested in this getting linked up with
this project, please contact James Ploeser at
iowafairtrade@gmail.com. He’s in Iowa, but is
the point person coordinating efforts with other
states as well.

The Gospel According
to the Masai People
This is an excerpt from a book Deacon Reggie
Crenshaw just finished reading last month.
“An extraordinary example of such affinities is a
creed composed for the Masai people of Africa
in the 1960s.” Its second article, about Jesus
Christ, affirms:
We believe that God made good his promise
by sending his Son, Jesus Christ, a man in the
flesh, a Jew by tribe, born poor in a little village,
who left his home and was always on safari do-
ing good, curing people by the power of God,
teaching about God and man, showing that the
meaning of religion is love. He was rejected by
his people, tortured and nailed hands and feet to
a cross, and died. He lay buried in the grave, but
the hyenas did not touch him, and on the third
day, he rose from the grave.
After nineteen centuries of the Christian read-
ing of the Gospels in the original Greek and in
many new languages all over the globe, it took
the fresh experience of a new culture in Africa
to discover there the message that Jesus, after
having been “always on safari doing good,”
was buried in a stone sepulcher sealed by a rock
to protect his body from the danger of the
scavenging hyenas, a danger that first-century
Palestine and twentieth-century Africa both
knew very well.”

 TO DO JUSTICE

R
evisionist History is a term generally
used to denote the efforts of the
powers that be in rewriting history,
in order to justify or pacify people, for the
purpose of deception, denigration, and
domination. During this season, as we celebrate
a time of thanks, it is good for us to come
together with family and friends and thank God
for the privilege of having family and friends.
However, the general myths taught around
this time suggest that Thanksgiving was about
Pilgrims, Puritans, Indigenous Native Americans
(pejoratively called Indians), and turkeys. Teachers
urge young children to dress up as pilgrims and
Native Americans in paper bag costumes, as
they gather to dine at the table of brotherhood,
sisterhood and friendship. The message that is
taught is nothing more than revisionist history
infecting our children — and even adults — with
the lie that Native Americans were happy to
befriend those who “landed on Plymouth Rock.”
The Seattle public schools have taken a
courageous and major step to deconstruct
revisionist history and put forth the truth about
the relationship of Puritans, Pilgrims, and
Indigenous Native American People. For at least
the past three years, the Seattle schools have
sent letters to teachers and staff, alerting them
that “Thanksgiving” is a hard time for native
Americans, because of the manner in which their
ancestors were tricked and killed by those called
settlers, pilgrims, and puritans. This year, the
Seattle schools included a list of the myths in the

letter to the teachers and staff which included the
myths of “The First Thanksgiving.” You may view
this list and share it with your children by going

html. Please read the entire article, but take special
note of Myth #11, which states the following:
Myth #11: Thanksgiving is a happy time.
Fact: For many Indigenous Native Americans
(Indian) people, “Thanksgiving” is a time
of mourning, of remembering how a gift of
generosity was rewarded by theft of land and
seed corn, extermination of many from disease
and gun, and near total destruction of many
more from forced assimilation. As currently
celebrated in this country, “Thanksgiving” is a
bitter reminder of 500 years of betrayal returned
for friendship.

Most early Christians embraced neither radical poverty nor common

ownership of possessions. Most Christians then, lived as most
Christians do now, working for a living and owning possessions. Some
Christians were rich, some were middle-class and some were poor.

Nevertheless, there was a great deal of emphasis on sharing in the

early church. One of Paul’s major projects was to take up a collection
among the gentle churches of Greece to help the Jewish Church
of Jerusalem (I Cor. 16:1-4; Romans 15:25-28; Acts 24:17). The
collection was necessary because Christians in Jerusalem were in
poverty, but it was also a demonstration of the unity of the church.

Chapter 8 in Paul’s appeal to the Christians of Corinth, contributes

generously to this collection. Paul holds up the example of what
Jesus did for them, “Becoming poor for your sake” (verse 9). Our
generosity is our response to God’s generosity to us in Christ; our
generosity is a part of our imitation of Christ. Paul did not ask the
Corinthians to give up everything they own, but to share from what
they have, in order to achieve some degree of equality between those
who have more and those who have less (verse 12:15). One Christian
should not have a surplus while another Christian lives in want.

Due to the homegoing services for our be-
loved Rev. Barbara Allen, the Phase 1 training
scheduled for Saturday, November 17th was
cancelled.
The new deadline for completing Phase 1 of
the Youth Ministry Training (which includes
Workshops #1, 2 & 3) has been changed to:
Saturday, December 1, 2007,
8:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., Location: Atrium
In compliance with our insurance company,
anyone (21 years of age and older) who has
not completed all three workshops CANNOT
work with Trinity youth, under any circum-
stances, until all training requirements are
met.

 A God of Restoration
My heartfelt hope for the congregation in the year 2007 is that each member
will fully embrace what it means to be loved by a God who restores.
