These publications are a key element in the Royal Colleges of Physicians ongoing
commitment to candidates and their tutors. The books may be obtained from the
MRCP(UK) Central Office and are normally dispatched within three

MRCP(UK) Part 1 Examination
Syllabus 1999 Edition
The Syllabus is indicative of those areas of knowledge required to pass the
Examination. Although each diet will not test every area of knowledge detailed in
the Syllabus, the Examination should be viewed as a representative sample of the
items of knowledge set out in the Syllabus.

(PACES) and Clinical Guidelines 2001/2
Edition
Candidates entering the General Medicine Clinical Examination (PACES) must be
able to demonstrate their ability to examine a patient using a competent technique,
elicit abnormal findings and discuss their significance. These Guidelines indicate the
degree of detail required by the Examiners.
