BME II / II

Assignment # 1 (a) Date Due: May 10, 2013 [10:15 AM]
Fluid Basics

Assume appropriate/exact value of data where necessary
1. Define Fluid. Distinguish between: a) ideal and real fluid, b) compressible and incompressible fluids, and c)
Laminar and Turbulent flows.

2. Two litre of petrol weights 14 N. Calculate the specific weight, mass density, specific volume and specific gravity
of petrol with respect to water.

3. A fan delivers 4 m
3
of air per second at 20 C and 1.25 bar. Calculate the mass of air delivered taking molecular
weight of air as 28.97. Also determine the density, specific volume and specific weight of the air being delivered.

4. An increase in pressure of liquid from 7.5 MPa to 15 MPa results into 0.2 percent decrease in volume. Determine
the bulk modulus of elasticity, and coefficient of compressibility of the liquid.

5. Two horizontal plates are placed 1.25 cm apart, the space between them is being filled with oil of viscosity 14
poise. Compute the shear in the oil if the upper plate is moved with velocity of 2.5 m/s.

6. A 15 cm diameter vertical cylinder rotates concentrically inside another cylinder of diameter 15.10 cm. The both
cylinders are 25 cm high. The space between the cylinders is filled with liquid whose viscosity is unknown. If
torque of 12 Nm is required to rotate the inner cylinder at 100 rpm, determine the viscosity of the liquid.

7. Find the smallest diameter of a manometer tube such that error due to capillary action in the measured gauge
pressure of 100 N/m
2
is less than 5 percent.

8. The air resistance on a 200g ball in free flight is given by F
D
= 2 x 10
-4
V
2
, where F
D
is in Newton and V is in
meter per second. If the ball is dropped from rest 500 m above the ground, determine the speed at which it hits the
ground. What percent of the terminal speed is the result?

9. Very small particles moving in fluids are known to experience a drag force proportional to speed. Consider a
particle of net weight W dropped in a fluid. The particle experience a drag force F
D
= k V, where V is the particle
speed. Determine the time and distance required for the particle to accelerate from rest to 95% of its terminal
speed V
t
, in terms of k , W, and g.

10. Calculate the density of standard air in a laboratory from the ideal gas equation of state. Estimate the experimental
uncertainty in the air density calculated for standard condition (1 atm and 15C) if uncertainty in measuring
barometer height is 2.5 mm of mercury and uncertainty in measuring temperature is 0.3C.

11. A disk of radius R rotates at angular velocity inside an oil container of viscosity , as in Figure P1.11.
Assuming a linear velocity profile and neglecting shear on the
outer disk edges, derive an expression for the viscous torque
on the disk.
Apply the rotating-disk viscometer of P 1.11, to the particular
case R = 5 cm, h = 1 mm, rotation rate 900 rev/min, measured
torque M = 0.537 N m. What is the fluid viscosity? If each
parameter (M,R,h,) has uncertainty of 1%, what is the overall uncertainty of the measured viscosity?
